For months, Gov. Nathan Deal and Democrat Jason Carter have traded barbs over education and economic policy. But at Sundays debate, both rivals unleashed new attacks that focused more on their rivals personal backgrounds than their policy positions as they intensified their appeal to the middle class.

In the testy showdown at the Atlanta Press Club, Deal called Carter a liberal who had a skewed view of private enterprise, and he tried to paint the state senator as a novice whos had little private-sector or political success. Carter accused Deal of failing to tap Georgias potential with a humdrum political agenda, and he raised questions about the governors sale of a lucrative salvage yard.

Deal was forced on the defensive through stretches of the hourlong debate, as Carter and Libertarian Andrew Hunt spent much of their time criticizing the governors leadership. At one point, when Carter was asked about whether hed support legislation inspired by Georgia tailback Todd Gurleys suspension, the Democrat pivoted to an attack on the governors higher education policy.

The governor pushed back on each broadside, saying Georgia was on the right track and that he would resume the course in the next four years. When pressed by Carter about the states stubborn unemployment rates pegged at 7.9 percent for September the governor called it an outlier statistic.

Unemployment rates are only good for political advertising, Deal said. Economists dont pay any attention to them.

Experience and change

The bitter back-and-forth played out against months of campaign rhetoric focusing on education and the economy, the two dominant themes of this election. Deal touts more than 300,000 jobs created on his watch and an education budget this year that includes more than $300 million in new k-12 money. Carter said the state is drowning in wasted potential that he can unlock with a pledge to boost classroom funding.

The sharpest attacks on Sunday, though, came over less lofty policy platforms. Early in the debate, Deal panned Carter as a two-term state senator who had little to show for his time in the statehouse.

Youve never passed a bill. Never offered an amendment to many of the bills you now are criticizing, he said. Why should Georgians vote for you with this absolute lack of leadership experience?

Carter, in a curt response, said the attack was misguided.

Carter and Deal get personal in second debate

Three candidates are on the ballot for two House seats in Merrimack County District 27, a floterial district that includes Concord Wards 1 through 7.

State Reps. Chip Rice and Mary Stuart Gile are both seeking re-election on the Democratic ticket. Their opponent, Democrat-turned-Republican Jim McConaha, is making his first bid for elected office.

Earlier this year, Jim McConaha tried to recruit Republican candidates to run for state representative in Concord.

It worked.

I think I talked myself into it, said McConaha, 73.

McConaha was once a registered Democrat, but he began listing himself as undeclared several years ago. This year, he said he officially registered as a Republican and filed for election in Concord. All of Concords 15 seats in the state House of Representatives are held by Democrats.

We have a fairly wide range of political opinions in the city, and it seemed to me that we would have a more representative delegation from the city if we had maybe some members from the other party, McConaha said.

An Air Force veteran, McConaha has lived in Concord for more than 40 years. He serves on the Concord Heritage Commission, and he worked as the states historic preservation officer and the director of the federal Farm Service Agency. He wants to see more communication between the city and the state, in particular because Concord is home to so much state-owned property.

My intention would be to be an advocate for the city and for its people, McConaha said.

Democrat Alison Lundergan Grimes is running for US Senate in the great state of Kentucky.

She is a woman of conviction, of substance, of principle. Im not an empty dress, she insists,

Im not a rubber stamp, and I am not a cheerleader! I am a Clinton Democrat.

Clinton Democrat once had a fairly specific meaning. Back when Bill Clinton first ran for president, he did so as a new kind of Democrat.

He decried the brain-dead policies of both parties.He was so determined to dispel Democrats image as being soft on crime, he took time off from the campaign trail to approve the execution of Ricky Ray Rector, a man so mentally disabled that when he ate his last meal, he left some of his pecan pie on his plate and told guards he was saving it for later.

Clinton broke with his partys racial politics by deliberately picking a fight with the deservedly forgotten rapper Sister Souljah. He vowed to reform welfare (though it took a Republican Congress to get him to follow through) and end the era of something for nothing government handouts.

The Clinton Democrats were spawns of the Democratic Leadership Council, a proudly centrist, pro-business and hawkish outfit within the Democratic Party, which is why left-wing Democrats often distrusted and occasionally despised it.

Jesse Jackson said DLC stood for Democrats for the Leisure Class and ridiculed it as a Southern white boys club.

The DLC closed up shop in 2011, in large part because the Democratic Party has moved so far to the left a fact repeatedly confirmed by Pew and Gallup surveys showing that Democrats favor activist government more than they used to and are much more comfortable calling themselves liberals than they were even a decade ago.

So its interesting that Grimes, and a number of other Democrats, are calling themselves Clinton Democrats. Grimes goes so far as to insist, Im not Barack Obama. She wont even say if she voted for Obama in 2008 or 2012.
