Why Top Democrat Said AG Nomination Is 'In the Back of the Bus'

Sen. Dick Durbin, the number two Democrat in the Senate, accused Senate Republicans today of placing Loretta Lynchs nomination to be Attorney General in the back of the bus."

Loretta Lynch, the first African-American woman nominated to be attorney general, is asked to sit in the back of the bus when it comes to the Senate calendar, Durbin, of Illinois, said on the Senate floor this morning. That is unfair. It is unjust. It is beneath the decorum and dignity of the United States Senate. This woman deserves fairness.

Durbin called Lynchs nomination a civil rights milestone.

President Obama nominated Lynch in November to lead the Department of Justice, but her confirmation has stalled in the Senate. Democrats have pointed out her confirmation process is the longest of any attorney general in recent history.

A Republican Senate aide called Durbins statement irresponsible.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has delayed a confirmation vote on Lynch until the Senate passes an anti-human trafficking bill. Senate Democrats oppose the trafficking measure because it includes a provision that places a restriction on funds for abortions.

The Lynch nomination is next on the schedule. The only thing holding up that vote is the Democrats filibuster of a bill that would help prevent kids from being sold into sex slavery. The sooner they allow the Senate to pass that bipartisan bill, the sooner the Senate can move to the Lynch nomination, Don Stewart, spokesman for McConnell, said today.

I cant decide which is more shameless: Sen. Durbin filibustering a sex trafficking bill he cosponsors at the behest of the abortion lobby, or him injecting race into the debate to distract from it, another Senate Republican aide said.

Budget 2015 packed with Liberal Democrat policies

The final Budget of this Parliament has Liberal Democrat policies at its core.

The Budget confirms that Liberal Democrats in government are building a stronger economy and a fairer society, creating opportunity for everyone.

In government we have ensured that Britain has kept on the path to recovery in a way that is fair.

We wont jeopardise our economy credibility by overseeing a Budget that is a pre-election giveaway. Thats why everything in the Budget is paid for, and in a fair way.

It is because of our sound economic management that we can afford to deliver these policies.

And to help pay for these policies we are takingfurther steps to clamp down on tax avoidance by multinational companies andensuring banks make a fair contribution by increasing the bank levy.

This Budget is packed full of policies that deliver Liberal Democrat priorities:

And it is all fully paid for by delivering on Liberal Democrat policy:

Our economy is growing because of the hard work of people and businesses throughout Britain. But our economic plan is the rock on which our recovery is being built and it wouldnt be happening without the Liberal Democrats in government.

Democrat Jim Webb hires aide for Iowa 2016 work

Democrat Jim Webb has hired someone to run his efforts in Iowa, a sign he's getting closer to a possible run for president.

"Glad to report that Rania Batrice is joining our team as senior political adviser, including coordinating Iowa," Webb said in a statement shared with The Des Moines Register Monday night.

He would be a long shot with tough odds against the heavy Democratic favorite former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

Webb, a Vietnam War veteran who served as U.S. Secretary of the Navy under Ronald Reagan, is solidly left but voted at times with Republicans during his four years in the U.S. Senate, representing Virginia from 2007 to 2013.

As he eyes a White House bid, he's appealing to the center of the 2016 electorate, talking about economic fairness, foreign policy, national infrastructure and a government where people from both political parties "work together for the common good."

To date, he hasn't made much of a footprint in Iowa, but he has tasked Batrice, who will be based in Des Moines, to help fix that.

"I will be managing Iowa operations as well as advising Senator Webb in other areas as he continues exploring answering the call again and throwing his hat in the ring,' Batrice, a Texas native, told the Register.

Batrice was the campaign manager for Iowa U.S. Rep. Dave Loebsack's re-election in 2008. She worked in Iowa and South Carolina for John Edwards' presidential campaign in 2007. More recently, she was campaign manager in a North Dakota congressional race, communications director for the North Dakota Democratic-NPL Party, and executive director of the Freedom Project to help survivors of human trafficking. She has a 2003 degree in psychology and art from Austin College in Texas.

Webb served in the Marines until, as he puts it, he "got blown up" in Vietnam. He went to law school at Georgetown University, and wrote a bestselling novel about an infantry platoon in the 1960s. He was a U.S. senator for four years.
