The People Have Spoken: No More Democracy!

Apologists forpolitical freedom are sounding thealarm: Democracy is indecline around theworld. This was especially clear fromthe latest report onpolitical rights andcivil liberties issued byFreedom House inlate January. Although asteady negative trend has continued since 2005, 2014 was aparticularly grim year: Thelevel offreedoms declined in61 countries, but increased inonly 33 arecord low forthe last nine years.

Freedom House evaluates thebehavior ofthe world's various states according tothe criteria of1) political rights theability tofreely participate inchoosing leaders andmaking decisions important tothe community, and2) civil rights thefreedom toput forward opinions, institutions andpersonal autonomy independent ofstate policy, theexistence ofindependent media andthe protection ofminority rights.

How then toexplain this negative trend, thedecline ofdemocratic freedoms inthe world? Theadvance ofdemocracy has never been alinear process. Inhis book, "The Third Wave: Democratization inthe Late Twentieth Century," American political scientist Samuel Huntington suggests that theprocess consisted ofthree long periods, or waves.

Thefirst wave, 1828-1926, began with therevolutions inthe United States andFrance andeventually led tothe emergence ofdemocracy in29 countries. It was followed bya regressive wave between 1920 and1940, marked bythe rise offascist andcommunist regimes. Thesecond wave ofdemocratization followed theAllied victory inWorld War II andthe process ofdecolonization, increasing thenumber ofdemocracies to36.

Then, between 1958 and1970, anumber offormer colonies experienced thesecond regressive trend away fromdemocracy. Thethird andfinal wave ofdemocratization between 1974 and1991 began with theliberalization ofthe southern European states, aprocess that later spread toSouth American, Asian andcommunist countries.

By1994, thetotal number ofdemocratic states reached 72. Is thecurrent trend simply thethird regressive wave away fromdemocratization?

Not necessarily. Political scientist Jay Ulfelder recently explained that thenumber ofdemocracies has not fallen since 2005. Thedecline indemocracy that Freedom House identified primarily concerns Middle Eastern states andformer Soviet republics that were never especially liberal tobegin with.

Inother words, theproblem is not that anumber ofcountries have stopped following ademocratic model, but that authoritarian regimes have begun tightening thescrews ontheir societies. Thus, according toFreedom House, ofthe eight countries inthe Middle East, only Tunisia managed tobecome more liberal, while therest actually backtracked onfreedoms atrend that began ineach ofthose seven countries even before 2014.

Asimilar dynamic characterized theEurasian region andsub-Saharan Africa. Russia, which earned theclassification ofa non-free state back in2004, has since fallen froma grade of5 to6, with 7 thelowest onthat scale.

IGP receives video death threat by men in masks

Members of the group called Anti-Democracy Sons of Malaysia (AMAD) say they intend to blow up the IGPs car.

SHAH ALAM: Barely a month after uploading a video threatening to blast firecrackers in front of the courthouse, another video has been uploaded, this time even more severe as it contains a clear and precise threat to kill the Inspector-General of Police by blowing-up his car.

The video features three individuals clad in black and wearing full face masks, with their spokesman, speaking in a digitally altered voice.

He starts off his tirade asking if the people were aware that before developed countries like the United States, Russia and China became successful and respected, their people rejected all forms of democratic mean to bring down their corrupt regimes.

The spokesman also asked a string of questions relating to how democracy had failed the people of Malaysia.

Can Malaysians change the Elections Commission chairman via democratic means? Can the chief justice be changed via democratic means? Can the IGP be changed via democratic means? the spokesman asked.

He said the answer was no, because these people were the very agents that destroyed democracy.

We the Anti-Democracy Sons of Malaysia (AMAD) hereby announce that we will kill the Inspector-General of Police by blowing-up his car. After which the heads of government agencies will be too terrified to carry out crimes against democracy.

He also said the people of Malaysia will then rise by using means other than democracy.

Before ending the video by flashing their middle fingers and saying, f@#$ democracy, one individual illustrated the groups intentions by dragging two toy cars across the table while the spokesman lit the cars aflame to the sounds of a massive explosion.

Want to kill cash for access? Simple – whack up MPs' pay to 150,000

And frankly, it doesnt matter what those authorities discover. Because it will happen again. And then it will happen again. And then it will happen again.

We are fools. All of us. MPs, journalists, parliamentary scrutineers, the voters. We are the children who keep putting our hands in the fire in the expectation that this is the occasion we wont get burnt.

We have created a system of financing our democracy that has become an embarrassing, unsustainable, farce. A farce that we are all responsible for.

We create an environment where MPs are terrified of being seen to have their snouts in the trough. So they refuse to award themselves a pay rise, and instead try various tricks, flicks and clever accountancy ruses to supplement their income. Then when we in the media uncover and expose those ruses, the public cry: look, we knew it! Snouts in the trough again!

In the wake of the expenses scandal it was agreed by everyone MPs, press, the public that the issue of MPs pay should be referred to an independent adjudication panel. And so, to great fanfare, Ipsa was set up. And what did Ipsa decide? It decided that MPs should be awarded a 10 per cent pay rise. At which point there was uproar. The same MPs, press and the public who had been demanding and welcomed Ipsas establishment declared the whole thing a disgrace and demanded Ipsa be disbanded.

To see just how ludicrous things have become, look at one of the key defences issued this morning by both Jack Straw and Malcolm Rifkind.

Both are claiming that they were not involved in negotiating the establishment of commercial contracts in their parliamentary offices. Why are they placing such significance on where these negotiations or non-negotiations took place? Because if they did negotiate in their offices then technically they are in breach of the rules. But if theyd just walked out of those offices, crossed by the lights, and walked into Costa Coffee to hold their meeting, it would have been fine. This is utter madness.

What is even more mad is the solution to all this is staring us in the face, and has been for years. Whack up MPs' pay to 150,000, have annual rises set by an independent panel, and say thats it. No outside interests, no lobbying, no commercial deals. Youre an MP now, thats your job, and its a full-time job.

Thats an outrage people will cry. How can we justify paying them that at a time when everyone is being told to tighten their belts?

This is how you justify it.
