Now get regular updates about Facebook’s privacy work from a dedicated Page on the social media platform – Indulgexpress

Facebook

Social media platform, Facebook will now regularly update users about its work on maintaining privacy on its family of apps via a dedicated Page.

The Facebook Page on privacy will have in-depth posts on some of the "hard technical questions we encounter, to actions we're taking against those who try to undermine privacy on our platform".

The social network has faced several privacy-related scandals in the past that led to intense scrutiny and penalties. In a historic judgment, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) last July slapped a massive $5 billion fine on Facebook over users' privacy violations in the Cambridge Analytica scandal.

Facebook said that in the dedicated Page, it would explain improvements it makes to further protect people's privacy.

"We will continue to share how we design privacy into our products, highlight advances we make to the technology that keeps people's information safe and provide more transparency into things we find and fix," said the company.

The company said it would report on its privacy practices to the newly formed Privacy Committee on its Board of Directors.

"And an independent, third-party assessor will review our practices and report on them to the Privacy Committee and the FTC," said Facebook.

The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) last year directed the social networking platform to pay $100 million penaltyfor making misleading disclosures regarding the risk of misuse of user data.

Detectives in Co. Armagh investigating recent reports of online sextortion – Armagh i

Detectives in Lurgan are currently investigation recent reports of sextortion in the area.

While no specific details on the incidents were revealed by the PSNI, they have issued advice to potential victims.

They say they are committed to fully investigating this type of crime when it is reported to them; however, they want to do all they can to raise awareness so this doesnt happen at all. They also need victims of sextortion to report it.

Sextortion is a form of blackmail where a perpetrator threatens to reveal intimate images of the victim online unless they give in to their demands.

These demands are typically for money or further intimate images. Criminals might befriend victims online by using a fake identity and then persuade them to perform sexual acts in front of their webcam.

Criminals who then threaten to share the images with the victims friends and family. This can make the victims feel embarrassed and ashamed, and prevent them from coming forward to report the incident.

Perpetrators can be located anywhere, targeting a number of people, targeting victims through dating apps, social media or webcams. Many are based overseas. For the criminal, this is a low risk way to make money and they can reach many victims easily online. Criminals will always exploit any opportunity to extort money from unsuspecting members of our community but together we can stop it.

A PSNI spokesperson said: We believe these types of crimes are generally under reported and that in some cases, people prefer to pay money rather than contact police.

We would urge anyone who has been the victim of cyber related blackmail to come forward and report it to police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Even though it may be embarrassing, anybody who is the victim of such a crime should be reassured that we are able to deal with it.

PSNI advice on online safety:

Do not share intimate videos online. Do not get lured into compromising situations such as removing clothes or performing intimate acts online. Always remember that what goes online may well stay online Be wary about who you invite or accept invitations from on social networking sites. Do not accept friendship requests from complete strangers Update the privacy settings on your social networking accounts so only people you know can view your account Do not include any sensitive, private or confidential information in profiles If you use online dating sites, choose those that offer the ability to email prospective dates using a service that conceals both parties true email addresses Also on dating sites, set up a separate email account that does not use your real name. This is very simple and quick to do using such providers as Hotmail, Yahoo! Mail or Gmail Quickly block nuisance and fraudulent users from further contact with you and also report them for abuse If you become a victim of this type of scam, do not respond to the blackmailers demands, but report the issue to the police and the relevant social networking site If you think that you have been persuaded by anyone to part with payment details, contact your bank or card issuer immediately

Zoom says free users will get end-to-end encryption after all – The Verge

Zoom says it will begin allowing users of its videoconferencing software to enable end-to-end encryption of calls starting with a beta next month, the company announced on Wednesday. The feature wont be restricted to paid enterprise users, either. Its coming to both free and paid users, Zoom says, and it will be a toggle switch any call admin can turn on or disable, in the event they want to allow traditional phone lines or older conference room phones to join.

Zoom does not proactively monitor meeting content, and we do not share information with law enforcement except in circumstances like child sex abuse, a company spokesperson said at the time, following comments from Zoom CEO Eric Yuan during a call with investors after the companys quarterly earnings release. We plan to provide end-to-end encryption to users for whom we can verify identity, thereby limiting harm to these vulnerable groups. Free users sign up with an email address, which does not provide enough information to verify identity.

Zoom has also been facing harsh criticism since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic for failing to beef up its security despite huge surges in user growth as Zoom and similar services became virtual hangout tools during lockdowns. In late March, Zoom admitted that while it uses a standard web browser data encryption, it does not use end-to-end encryption. The company has spent the time since improving its security and working on a new encryption solution.

Yet it appears the company has figured out a workaround. To make this possible, Free/Basic users seeking access to E2EE will participate in a one-time process that will prompt the user for additional pieces of information, such as verifying a phone number via a text message, Zoom explains in its blog post. Many leading companies perform similar steps on account creation to reduce the mass creation of abusive accounts. We are confident that by implementing risk-based authentication, in combination with our current mix of tools including our Report a User function we can continue to prevent and fight abuse.

Its not clear when the feature will launch for all users, but the beta is arriving in July and Zoom intends to have some level of permissions so account administrators can disable or enable it at the account or group level.
