UFOs and revolution: J. Posadas’ crazy story of the socialist galaxies – AL DIA News

The Argentinean J. Posadas -his real name was Homero Cristalli, "Posadas" was more like the collective entity to which he gave life- has been a very well known character in the memesphere since 2010, when all kinds of memes began to circulate around his most picturesque ideas about the communist utopia, especially in connection with UFOs.TheArgentinean not only believed in them, but was also convinced that they wereproof that there were civilizations more advanced than ours in the outer space. Of course, of a socialist nature. Revolutionary aliens.

However, for A. M Gittlitz, author of I Want to Believe: Posadism, UFOs and Apocalypse Communism, beyond the delirious prophecies of the leader of a movement that the Trotskyists themselves considered a madman, Posadas' life and ideas not only refer us to the most tragic history of socialism in Latin America, but are more timely than ever in a period like ours, where uncertainty has given rise to all sorts of conspiracies and wild catastrophism.

After learning about their history, perhaps they would like, as I do, for Netflix to produce a documentary about their delirious utopia that is still alive on the Internet.

This is how the crazy history of the galaxies through a socialist lens begins.

Communist UFOs

J. Posadas is often taken as a sinister ascetic. Before becoming a political activist, he wanted to be a footballer, but before that he was just a poor, orphaned boy with nine siblings who lived through malnutrition and begging in Argentina. For this reason, saidGittlitz, he was left with the idea that one had to be austere to fight capitalism.

So much so, that after joining the Socialist Workers' Party's Trotskyist branch, some of his comrades began to consider him a maniac. Especially because as he moved up the ranks in the party, his unique routines took over. Among themwas the idea that non-reproductive sex had no place in the socialist struggle and that sexual desire would vanish, as would jokes, after the revolution because of technology.

The Argentinean's essay on Marxist UFOs, "Flying Saucers", was published in 1968 in Spanish and in 2012 in English.

But among all the crazy theories he is credited with, there was one that was not his own, but Dante Minazzoli's - the other half of that entity called "Posadas" and the main believer in life on other planets. With Minazzoli, Homer Cristalli founded a small Trotskyist circle in Argentina in the 1940s -the time of the Roswell incident and when many UFO sightings were reported in the country. Together, they began to address the extraterrestrial hypothesis. Two decades later, when the Trotskyists denied him leadership of the Fourth International, Posadas lit a fuse for his revolutionary morality and wrote his now-famous essay on intergalactic communism -a socialist utopia in the stars that was coming to Earth. The UFOs were his proof.

The Latin American tinderbox

Although the Argentine Posadistas played a relevant role in the Cuban Revolution, they did so more as supporters of Che than of Fidel, who, especially after the Bay of Pigs invasion, severely rebuked the Trotskyists. The latter did not agree with Cuba's radical posture towards the United States -the USSR was in favor of "peaceful coexistence."In fact, if Posadas and Che agreed on anything, it was that nuclear war could be "a necessary disease" to destroy capitalism and start their new communist utopia.

"[The Posadistas] saw his conception of the foco guerrilla cell as a third-world variant of the Soviet workers council. Posadas experimented with this idea in Guatemala, where he became the ideological figurehead of the MR-13 rebels, pushing them to form armed revolutionary peasant councils," saidA. M Gittlitz.

He added: "When Guevara resigned from the government and disappeared, the Posadists wrote that Castro, under pressure from the Soviets, had killed him," but his body was found a year later in Bolivia and Posadas called it a "forgery."

From Sect to Meme

Things began to take an even more messianic and sectarian turn in the 1970s. J. Posadas had to go into exile in Rome to escapeUruguayan repression and it was during this exile that his utopia was forged in a real way. His followers -most of them, the author points out, had not even read Marx- became acolytes and J. Posadas' texts turned into apocalyptic revelations that spoke about the advent of a new society in which even the dolphins would have a leading role.

While the Fourth Posadist International once had more than 15 member parties around the world, now there are only a few supporters left and only one political party inthe Revolutionary Workers Party of Uruguay.

" One way to read the Posadist memes, in the absence of a potential world war between communism and capitalism, is that 'we're screwed, give up nuclear weapons, get it over with."

Most socialists will say of Posadas that it was a joke, an absolute ridicule, if not a puppet show from the past. But his shadow is cast from that distant Roman exile, where he died in 1981, onto the Internet.

About ten years ago, memes began circulating on the net with his ideas about the longed-for nuclear catastrophe that would destroy capitalism or his eccentric idyll with the dolphins. His essay on the Trotskyist UFOs was even translated into English in 2012. A phenomenon that has produced, according to Gittlitz, that Posadas' character rivals in popularity that of Trotsky himself in Google searches. But why?

"For decades, Posadas was like a funhouse mirror at which sectarian leftists would laugh at their own distorted image. The humor around Posadas today is totally different. The people who are into the memes arent mocking a strange sect of Trotskyism, or Trotskyism in general, or Leninism in general, but the entirety of the failed revolutionary socialist tradition, " concludedGittlitz, who had set out to write a trilogy on illuminati sects with Posada as the background.

"One way of reading the Posadist memes, in the absence of a potential world war between communism and capitalism, is that 'we're screwed, put down your nuclear weapons, get it over with," he wrote.

How chatter and conservative anger upended a White House staffing search – POLITICO

Nothings done until its done, and thats always been true in Trump world and this is yet another of many examples, said a person close to the White House.

The DPC is a little-known but influential office within the White House. During Trumps tenure, various White House power centers have vied over installing allies to lead the council. The latest jockeying came after Joe Grogan, who had worked closely with departed acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney, recently announced he would leave his position.

Jared Kushner, Trumps son-in-law and senior adviser, floated several people for the role, including both Lyons and Rollins. Newly installed chief of staff Mark Meadows floated his own name, Stephen Miller, an influential immigration policy aide. It was expected that the domestic policy chief would play a significant role in the presidents efforts to reopen the country amid the coronavirus pandemic.

After several days of deliberations, it appeared Kushner and Meadows had selected Lyons to serve as acting DPC director for the rest of Trumps term, while continuing in his current role as White House staff secretary, a key official who manages document flow to the president.

POLITICO reported on May 6 that Lyons had been selected, citing four people familiar with the decision, including two White House officials. The next day, another White House official didnt dispute the appointment and provided a comment.

Derek is a loyal and highly respected member of the Trump White House who has worked to implement Donald Trumps policy agenda for three and a half years as staff secretary, the official said May 7.

But the decision apparently wasnt final. And the news of Lyons likely appointment frustrated some conservatives, given his former affiliation with Jeb Bushs 2016 presidential campaign.

Lyons, a lawyer and Harvard Law School grad, started his career as a law clerk to Brett Kavanaugh when the Supreme Court justice was still a judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals. He later worked on Capitol Hill.

But it was his time with Jeb Bushs campaign that made some conservatives suspicious. His affiliation with Kushner also raised some eyebrows, given that Trumps son-in-law has pushed for some more moderate policies, including business-friendly immigration changes that hardliners say are too lenient.

This is not what #AmericaFirst voters signed up for, tweeted conservative commentator Michelle Malkin May 6 using the hashtag #JaredKushnerIsNotMyPresident. Malkin described Lyons as someone who comes from Jeb Bushs Illegal Immigration Is An Act of Love wing of the GOP.

Trump has picked Derek Lyons as the head of the Domestic Policy Council...- hes a former Jeb! Person, tweeted Ryan Girdusky, a conservative writer and political consultant.

This past Friday, that White House official said Lyons was never officially offered the job. But others in the White House thought Lyons had the gig. They noted that on an internal White House deregulation policy call several days earlier, Rollins even congratulated Lyons on his reported new policy role, according to a White House official familiar with the call.

The first White House official said Meadows received praise internally about Lyons but some in the White House worried that criticism from influential conservative pundits, such as Ann Coulter and Tucker Carlson of Fox News, would soon follow.

A senior White House official pushed back on conservative complaints about Lyons ideology, noting he has been directly involved in crafting, finalizing and executing the staunchest border security measures and most rigorous immigration control measures that we have put in place. Former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, who worked with Lyons in the White House during impeachment, called him "a true conservative" who has "an excellent relationship with the president."

In a statement Friday, White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany praised Lyons.

"Derek Lyons is an invaluable member of the White House and a highly impressive and respected colleague, she said. He has been elevated to one of the highest titles in the White House, and for good reason."

There was another problem that arose during deliberations: Meadows and Kushner had yet to have Trump sign off on Lyons appointment when the news broke, according to two White House officials.

The first White House official said Lyons and Rollins were finalists for the job, but the job ultimately went to Rollins in part because she would be able to appear on television as part of the public facing role of DPC director.

There was talk of [Lyons] doing both roles, but it was decided the roles shouldnt be combined, the official said.

By the end of this week, Rollins had been tapped to head the DPC in an acting capacity. The New York Times first reported Rollins appointment Thursday night. Rollins introduced herself as DPC director on at least two calls with White House staff Friday, according to two people. A formal announcement is expected Monday, according to the White House.

Brooke is really Jareds person. ... I think that played a big part in it, said one person close to the White House.

Rollins didnt respond to a request for comment. Lyons had no comment.

After the White House settled on Rollins to lead the DPC, Lyons was elevated to the title of counselor, making him one of the closest advisers to the president alongside Hope Hicks and Kellyanne Conway, who have similar titles, although Conway is senior counselor. The move was seen internally by some as a face-saving measure and by others as a Kushner attempt to diminish Conways status. But the White House said Lyons was promoted to give him an expanded role on policy issues.

"Derek does extraordinary work in his role as Staff Secretary," Meadows said in a statement. "Given his large portfolio, elevating him to Counselor to the President made the most sense. This is an expansive role that will put him in an additional advisory role to President Trump on a wide range of legal, policy, and strategic matters."

Rollins also serves as director of the Office of American Innovation, a Kushner-launched office that handles various policy issues. Rollins and two others in that office, JaRon Smith and Theo Wold, were similarly considered for the DPC job. All three worked with Kushner on criminal justice reform and his long-stalled push to overhaul the immigration system.

Rollins, Grogan said, is a committed conservative, shes a team player, shes very smart, not just on policy but also on communications. I dont know that theres a better choice.

Previously, Rollins served as president of the Texas Public Policy Foundation, a think tank based in Austin partly funded by the Koch Brothers, and as a top aide to Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who went on to become Trumps first Energy secretary.

Kushner previously suggested Rollins for the DPC job in late 2018, before the job ultimately went to Grogan.

Rollins has more credibility with some conservatives than Lyons on a number of issues, such as fiscal policy. But not everyone was satisfied.

Picking the former leader of a faux nonpartisan research institute funded by corporations and billionaires like the Koch brothers speaks for itself, a conservative close to the White House said.

Meridith McGraw contributed to this report.

Social Media Influencers In The Post Pandemic World Part 2: Continued Social Distancing – Forbes

Some influencers have been able to expand their reach and grow the audience as people have spent ... [+] more time staring at their screens.

As the world settles into the new normal the issue of social media influencers and social media marketing is being explored. Despite the fact that the country is opening up, social distancing will remain for weeks, possibly months to come. At the same time, bars and restaurants likely won't be the hot spots they once were.

In part one of this three-part series on post-pandemic social media marketing, experts in the field discussed the role influencers could play in the coming weeks, now in part two the question turns to how influencers and brands will need to adapt to the changing world.

One way this could occur is by increasing the creativity.

"Creators are finding new ways to be creative and continue to connect with their audiences on social while in quarantine," saidMahzad Babayan, vice president of talent management and partnerships at Fullscreen, which offers tools, services, and consultation to social media content creators and brands.

"This includes leaning into 'educational' learning opportunities for their fans, encouraging them to spend their time inside creating their own content, making a new dish, learning a new craft, learning a new dance on TikTok, etc.," added Babayan.

"Creators are also connecting with brands that are relevant in our current climate," Babayan noted. "For example, we recently worked with Houseparty and it was a really seamless and organic way to promote this social networking service that creators and audiences alike are using to stay connected to their friends and family during quarantine."

Consider The Partnerships

Even in normal times the role of an influencer and power of the brand go hand-in-hand, and that hasn't really changed during the quarantine period. Some influencers have been able to expand their reach and grow the audience as people have spent more time staring at their screens.

"We've seen reports that audiences are still very much in tune with influencers while on lockdown, so much so that we might even be entering a 'golden age' of influencer marketing," said Jared Augustine, co-founder & CEO of social marketing platform Julius.

"While on lockdown, influencers have been able to maintain active building their communities," added Augustine. "However, as lockdown continues, it will be up to influencers to be very strategic with what partnership opportunities they take from brands, and not jump into less-than-perfects deals that, in the past, might have been an option in order to keep income flowing."

Just like any other time, influencers need to understand their worth, and not get pushed into deals that only benefit a brand.

"Influencers should be ready to say 'no' to partnerships that don't elevate experiences for their audience who are still confined to their homes," explained Augustine.

Loosening The Restrictions

Just because some restrictions are being loosened doesn't mean life will be completely back to how it was just three months ago.

"As cities and states move at their own pace to end the lockdowns, it's important for influencers to remember that the challenges their readers have will vary, too," said Laurie Buckle, founder of CookIt Media, an influencer marketing agency that specializes in food and lifestyle content creation.

Influencers will need to stay focused on this "new normal" rather than taking what might have been the normal course of hyping summer getaways, concerts, sporting events and other outdoor activities. Instead, as we transition to a post-pandemic world it might be a world of debt, unemployment and very likely a lot of uncertainty for many people.

"Like every brand in the world, influencers too must prioritize their audience's needs above all else in order to stay relevant for the long-haul," said Augustine.

"(Influencers) should focus on helping solve problems that all readers share, like cutting food waste, keep their families healthy, and balancing days that include cooking, home-schooling, and cleaning," added Buckle. "Key to getting this messaging right is empathy for the reader."

The Good Space

Influencers can also be a force for good in these uncertain times, sharing not only useful tips, but also using their power in other meaningful ways.

"They can focus efforts on social good driving charitable donations, for example," said Marshall Sandman, host of the Instagram Live series @SpillingtheQuarantea and influencer marketing expert.

"Another way is to focus on products and services that align with quarantine life, such as kitchen and baking products, at-home beauty treatments, home furnishings, educational and entertainment apps and shows, etc.," added Sandman. "Instagram Live is another great platform to share at-home workouts, recipes, DIY demonstrations, interviews, and more. Influencers can subtly promote brands and products on Instagram Live while offering useful and interactive content that their followers can participate in or tune into."
