Latest expansion a dream come true for owner of Seymours Basement Systems

SEYMOUR >> Dreams really do come true just ask entrepreneur Larry Janesky, founder and CEO of Basement Systems Inc.

Janeskys humble beginnings date back to 1987 when he began a business to fix leaky basements based out his 900-square-foot home on Clayton Street in Devon. Fast-forward 30 years, and Janeskys determination and innovative spirit has evolved into a 356,000-square-foot empire that dominates the Silvermine Industrial Park off Route 67.

Basement Systems was born out of Janeskys desire to fix a crack in a foundation he found while working as a carpenter, renovating an old Colonial home. The company has grown into one of the worlds largest networks of water-proofing, basement finishing and crawlspace repair groups.

And as companies continue to downsize or leave Connecticut, Janesky, 52, is defying a dry spell through his tradition of expansion and growth. He celebrated the 30th anniversary of Basement Systems last week, with the grand opening of yet another major expansion.

The 77,000-square-foot, high-tech gem is a dream come true for Janesky. This latest expansion brings Basement Systems total number of buildings at the Seymour world headquarters to nine.

This is the most incredible home improvement contractor building in the world, said Janesky. Its been three years in the making and its a great symbol of our belief in growth.

The three-story building features a state-of-the-art auditorium for training and entertaining up to 350 people, 48 bays that hold up to 100 trucks, and a sleek, modern design that connects workers from across the company. It also serves as the main training center for the Contractor Nation School of Entrepreneurship, which provides live leadership training as well as an online program for contractors so they can reach an even greater level of success, according to Janesky.

A caf on the lower level is named Leslies Place, for Janeskys mother, who passed away last year; it boasts vintage wooden tables and old schoolhouse-style chairs.

Janesky, a father of three, owns nearly 30 patents on basement and crawlspace products, has authored five books and received numerous awards and accolades. In addition, Basement Systems is Seymours largest employer, with 315 employees, and one of the towns top 10 taxpayers.

Basement Systems has expanded into several sister companies, including Connecticut Basement Systems Inc., CleanSpace, Total Basement Finishing Inc., Relia-Serve Corp., Foundation Supportworks Inc. and Dr. Energy Saver Inc. The company has more than 350 dealers and franchises in six countries.

Growing the company didnt come easy for Janesky, who didnt go to college. Through reading motivational books on business, personal growth and related topics, Janesky learned to believe in himself. His entrepreneurial roots are steeped in everything from a newspaper delivery route to his own carpentry business.

My dream existed in courage and determination and survived through persistence and bold action, Janesky told an audience of more than 100 people during this weeks grand opening. He became emotional as he shared slides of the small home in which he began the business, alongside the massive complex the business has grown into.

Janesky has designed each of his buildings, all boasting themed areas, such as the Internet Marketing Department that operates out of a treehouse; the International Call Space area reminiscent of an old mining town; and the video team that works in a room resembling a space station.

Janesky thrives on sharing his success with others. Last year, he reached out to the Ansonia Nature and Recreation Center, and before long a brand-new, state-of-the-art wooden playground with airplanes, swings and more emerged thanks to Janesky and his employees, who volunteered their time for thousands of Valley kids.

Bill Purcell, president of the Greater Valley Chamber of Commerce, lauded Janeskys continued investment here.

This state-of-the art facility is a strong symbol of the companys continued growth and diversification and speaks volumes about the economic vitality of our Valley region, Purcell said. Larry Janesky is an extraordinary entrepreneur and visionary, and we are truly grateful for this substantial real estate investment in our community.

Digital marketing pro preps Alvarado for growth – Cleburne Times-Review

Years ago, promoting businesses through billboards or newspaper ads were among the only ways to advertise.

That was expensive and if you couldnt afford it, you couldnt advertise and grow your business, said Miche Traina, founder of The Elements Group in Fort Worth.

Traina said now, businesses and organizations have access to free marketing through social media, but most dont know how to take advantage of it.

He discussed the transition of marketing and offered tips to business owners at the Alvarado Chamber of Commerce luncheon on Thursday.

Since 2008, Traina has helped numerous organizations develop successful growth strategies to more effectively reach their target audience.

We are all in the same boat when we are entrepreneurs and have businesses or work on a team, he said. We are looking to grow and expand.

Traina said he often runs into businesses that do not know how to get their own message out.

I thought if there could be a way for them to understand how to articulate their message to get it out, their business would be full, he said. Often times we really overstep some important factors. If you think about how to grow a businesses and get to the step, we a lot of times go with what we already know.

Traina challenges businesses to sit down and figure out their purpose.

Most of the time, people will immediately jump to the product they deliver as oppose to the genuine purpose that they have, he said. Often times people are so interested in jumping ahead, they overlook the on ramp of developing relationships.

Russ Weaver, pastor of Shepherds Valley Cowboy Church, gets it, Traina said.

Pastor Russ is a mentor of mine, and he doesnt even know it, he said. The things he is doing in his community are incredible; I know his character and I know his heart. And when I see somebody who wants to go into the community and affect change, I see that it is about communicating. Not necessarily about who Jesus is, but a place where you can put on your boots and come as you are. Speaking through that as it translates into your own world is the most effective way to communicate.

Traina said so much is happening in Alvarado and hopes businesses are ready for a lot of people to come.

I live in Fort Worth and everything I hear is, Man, can you believe this is coming to Alvarado? he said. In the next five to seven years, there are some amazing things coming. Is your team ready? Are your facilities ready? Is your marketing ready? Are you ready to receive growth?

Traina and his team help businesses come up with a social media calender of comprehensive content and executes it for them.

Alvarado City Manager Clint Davis said Trainas expertise in marketing is valuable to the city.

What a great amount of information he has given us, he said. I was sitting there, going through my own inventory.

Is your team ready?

Facebook Apologizes To Black Activist For Censorship – News One

Tech giant Facebook has issued an apology to a Black activist and writer who claims the social media site suspended her account for bringing attention to racism, reports USA Today.

According to the outlet, Ijeoma Oluos visit to Cracker Barrel with her two children sparked the controversy. During her visit, she jokingly tweeted At Cracker Barrel 4 the 1st time. Looking at the sea of white folk in cowboy hats & wondering will they let my black ass walk out of here?'

Her tweet prompted several racist attacks on both Twitter and Facebook. Twitter swiftly removed the hateful posts and suspended the accounts associated with them, the outlet reports. After Oluo posted images of the derogatory tweets on her Facebook page, her account was suspended.

I write and speak about race in America because I already see this hate every day, Oluo wrote, according to USA Today. Its the complicity of one of the few platforms that people of color have to speak out about this hate that gets me.

Facebook issued a statement extending an apology to Oluo; claiming that suspending her account was a mistake and that they are working on ways to maneuver through these important issues. According to the outlet, an apology wasnt enough for Oluo who claims that her online incident wasnt isolated and that shes witnessed other Black activists have their accounts suspended for calling out racism.

The only reason my ban was reversed was because of the outrage it generated, but so many other marginalized people in similar situations are simply forced out, she said.

The censorship of Blacks has been an ongoing issue on the social platform. USA Today reports that civil rights groups have called out Facebook for being racially biased with their targeting and removing posts and temporarily suspending the accounts of Black activists like Shaun King.

According to the outlet, the social networking site removes thousands of posts that evoke hate each week.

Apple CEO Cook Defends Move to Censor Chinese Apps – Fortune

Apple CEO Tim Cook has been a staunch advocate for civil rights, and even keeps a picture of Martin Luther King Jr. in his office. So it's probably not surprising that Cook is a little defensive about a recent decision by Apple to go along with a repressive computer policy in China.

In recent days, Apple pulled a number of apps from its app store in China that could be used to circumvent China's Internet censorship laws. Known as virtual private network, or VPN, apps, the programs let iPhone and iPad users mask their origins from the "Great Firewall of China" and thereby access sites banned by the government and better shield their communications from surveillance.

On Tuesday, Cook said Apple had no choice but to remove the VPN apps.

Get Data Sheet , Fortune's technology newsletter.

"We would obviously rather not remove the apps, but like we do in other countries, we follow the law wherever we do business," Cook said on a call with analysts to discuss quarterly financial results. "We strongly believe in participating in markets and bringing benefits to customers is the best interest of the folks there and in other countries as well."

In a column published earlier on Tuesday, New York Times tech columnist Farhad Manjoo called out Apple for caving to the Chinese censorship demands. Conceding that Apple was probably forced to remove the VPN apps, Manjoo concluded that "Apples quiet capitulation to tightening censorship in one of its largest markets is still a dangerous precedent."

Cook also went on to explain why he thought the situation in China was quite different from the standoff between Apple and the FBI last year over decrypting information on an iPhone used by a terrorist in San Bernardino.

"Some folks have tried to link it to the U.S. situation last yearthey're very different," Cook said on the analyst call. "In the case of the U.S., the law in the U.S. supported us. It was very clear. In the case of China, the law is very clear there."

But Apple ( aapl ) did state its point of view in China "in the appropriate way," Cook added. That has not, at least so far, included any public criticism of the Chinese demand, or even more drastically, pulling out the country in protest.
