Cooke named as Democrat editor – Sedalia Democrat

Nicole Cooke has been named the editor of the Sedalia Democrat.

Cooke has been with the Democrat since July 2013, starting as the education reporter. She moved to the city beat in May 2014 and has served as the papers news editor for the last two years.

Im looking forward to this new opportunity, Cooke said. While theres still more for me to learn about the Democrat and Sedalia in this new position, I will be able to utilize the knowledge and relationships Ive formed as a reporter in West Central Missouri to help lead the Democrat in the coming years.

She will replace outgoing Editor Tim Epperson, who is leaving Sedalia to become the executive editor of three newspapers for Lee Enterprises, including The World, in Coos Bay, Oregon.

Sedalia and Pettis County have been very good to me, Epperson said. Ive made many friends the past two years who I will deeply miss. It was a bittersweet decision to make this move because I have such an amazing news team at the Democrat. Im proud of their accomplishments and what they have brought to this community through their writing. Thank you Nicole, Hope, Faith and Alex for your dedication and hard work. I am confident Nicole will continue to make the Democrat a successful publication.

Cooke, originally of Lees Summit, graduated in 2013 with a bachelors in public relations and a minor in journalism from the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg. She worked as a reporter for the Muleskinner, UCMs student-run newspaper, for three years and as a copy editor.

She has become an award-winning journalist during her time at the Democrat, receiving numerous first place awards from Missouri news organizations for her coverage of breaking news, education and photojournalism both individually and as part of the newsroom staff.

Cooke will be responsible for leading the Democrat newsroom through the transition into its new ownership with Phillips Media Group along with Publisher Will Weibert and other department managers.

We are fortunate to have such a talented and well-decorated journalist such as Nicole Cooke to take over the helm of the editorial team, Weibert added. Tim Epperson has done a upstanding job as the Democrats editor, and my goal is to make the Democrat an even stronger paper both in print and online.

She has made Sedalia her home over the last four years, becoming involved in various community organizations. She serves as the public relations chair for Sedalia Young Professionals and helps the Sedalia Area Chamber of Commerce with its social media. Cooke also volunteers with the Boys & Girls Clubs of West Central Missouri.

Local news sources are so important to a community, Cooke said. I hope to build on the Democrats success from the editors before me and grow our digital and print coverage of our community.

Cooke can be reached at 660-530-0138 or ncooke@sedaliademocrat.com.

Brexit may never happen, says top Liberal Democrat Cable – Reuters

LONDON Britain's scheduled exit from the European Union may never happen because its main political parties are too divided on the issue, said Vince Cable, a veteran lawmaker bidding to lead the fourth largest political party, the Liberal Democrats.

Prime Minister Theresa May's failure to win an outright majority in a snap national election last month has cast doubt on her capacity to lead Britain out of the EU, sharpening a debate on what sort of exit deal the government should seek. "I'm beginning to think that Brexit may never happen," Cable told the BBC on Sunday. "The problems are so enormous, the divisions within the two major parties are so enormous I can see a scenario in which this doesn't happen."

Cable served as business minister between 2010 and 2015 when the pro-European Liberal Democrats were the junior partners in a coalition government led by May's Conservative Party.

He is currently the only candidate in a contest for leadership of his party.

The Liberal Democrats' influence has waned since 2015, and they hold just 12 out of 650 seats in parliament.

They campaigned in the 2017 election to give Britons a second referendum on leaving the EU once a final deal had been agreed - something Cable described as a possible way out of Brexit.

The Conservatives are historically divided between a deeply eurosceptic faction and more pro-European members. That is expected to make life difficult for May when she puts Brexit legislation through parliament because she will need to unite the party to win key votes.

The second-largest party, Labour, is also riven by disagreement on what kind of deal would work best for Britain's economy.

Last month Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn sacked three members of his policy team after they defied his wishes by coming down in favor of Britain staying in the single European market in a parliamentary vote.

Private equity firm Apollo Global Management LLC said on Sunday it had agreed to acquire ClubCorp Holdings Inc , one of the largest owners and operators of private golf and country clubs in the United States, for $1.1 billion.

BERLIN German exports rose more strongly than expected in May, outpacing a solid increase in imports and widening the trade surplus of Europe's biggest economy, data showed on Monday.

A 19-year-old Oakland man drowned Sunday afternoon in the Russian River near Forestville.

The drowning occurred about 300 yards upstream from the main section of Steelhead Beach, according to a Sonoma Countys Sheriffs Office press release. A spokeswoman said officials were withholding the mans name until they notify his family.

Emergency dispatchers received the first call for help about 4:30 p.m. Sheriffs deputies, CHP officers, Forestville firefighters and state parks staff members joined in the search for the man, as did the Sheriffs Office Henry-1 helicopter.

Shortly after 5 p.m., one of the mans friends located the body about 5 yards from where the man had been last seen, said Eric Gromala, an engineer with the Forestville Fire Department. Friends said the man previously had been hanging onto a branch near the shore opposite Steelhead Beach and may have been trying to get out of the water.

There wasnt a strong current where the drowning took place, Gromala said.

It remained unclear Sunday evening whether the victim knew how to swim.

Letter: Trump makes one Democrat long for Bush – Albany Times Union

I am more aghast with each passing day at the utter ignorance, meanness and undignified demeanor of President Donald Trump.

Any rational person can see the names he calls those who disagree with him highlight his low self-esteem and ignorance of the position he fell into by lying to the 36 percent of Americans who believed he would make their lives better.

No wall will be built (with or without solar panels); no coal mines are coming back; no replacement of the Affordable Care Act will occur without these folks losing health coverage; and there will be no 4-5 percent economic growth. He demonstrates his ignorance of our government every time he opens his mouth.

For someone who is not very bright, he has a lot of nerve calling Mika Brzezinski "low IQ." She knows there are three branches of government, a fact to which he seems oblivious. She knows the United States is not a monarchy. She also knows who Frederick Douglass is (and where). She knows when he is lying, like when he promised no cuts to Medicaid or Social Security.

The whole world is laughing at him; therefore, they are laughing at us. What they don't realize is that a majority of us do not care for him and didn't vote for him. That doesn't make us any less a laughing stock. He has destroyed our credibility. His presidency will go down in history as the worst ever. I am a Democrat, but right now I miss George W. Bush.

Two Republican senators declare bid to repeal health care law ‘dead’ – Fox News

Two Republican lawmakers admitted Sunday the initial GOP bill to repeal and replace the nations health law is probably dead and President Trumps proposal to solely repeal it appears to be a non-starter.

Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., said in a televised interview on CBS it may now be time for Republicans to come up with a new proposal with support from Democrats.

"I think my view is it's probably going to be dead," McCain said of the GOP bill. If Democrats are included, he said, it doesn't mean "they control it. It means they can have amendments considered. And even when they lose, then they're part of the process. That's what democracy is supposed to be all about."

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La, speaking on Fox News Sunday, told Chris Wallace We dont know what the plan is. Clearly, the draft plan is dead. Is the serious rewrite plan dead? I don't know."

Sen. Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, signaled pessimism as well. He wrote on Twitter late Saturday that Republicans will lose their Senate majority if they dont pass health care legislation. Grassley added the party should be "ashamed" that it hasn't been able to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, or Obamacare.

Trump used Twitter Sunday afternoon to urge Republicans to follow through on their pledge to get rid of the health care law pushed by his predecessor.

"For years, even as a "civilian," I listened as Republicans pushed the Repeal and Replace of ObamaCare. Now they finally have their chance!," Trump said in a tweet.

At least 10 GOP senators have expressed opposition to the initial bill drafted by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky. Republicans hold a 52-48 majority and Democrats stand united against the bill, meaning that just three GOP defections will doom it. The weeklong July 4 recess only raised more doubts among senators as many heard from constituents angry about the GOP bill and the prospect of rising premiums.

McConnell last week said he would introduce a fresh bill in about a week scuttling and replacing much of former President Barack Obama's health care law. But McConnell also acknowledged that if the broader effort fails, he may turn to a smaller bill with quick help for insurers and consumers and negotiate with Democrats.

Sen. Ted Cruzs plan, which aims to lower premiums for healthy people, has drawn support from the White House and some conservatives in the House, which would have to approve any modified bill passed by the Senate. But his proposal has limited appeal to Republican moderates such as Grassley, who told Iowa Public Radio that it may be "subterfuge to get around pre-existing conditions."

Cruz on Sunday sought to dismiss Grassley's criticism as a "hoax" being pushed by Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer, insisting that people will be able to get the coverage they need at an affordable price. Cruz cast his plan as a compromise to unify the party on a GOP health bill.

"When it comes to repealing Obamacare, what I think is critical is that Republicans, we've got to honor the promise we made to the voters that millions of Americans are hurting under Obamacare," Cruz said.

"In my view failure is not an option," he said.
