Obama talks health care with St. Louis patients, nurses – St. Louis Public Radio

This article first appeared in the St. Louis Beacon: June 10, 2008 - Barack Obama ended his campaign swing through St. Louis on Tuesday after attending a fundraiser in downtown and visiting a hospital. The visit was part of a Midwestern trip that is expected to take him toWisconsin on Thursday. A trip to Iowa on Wednesday was canceled due to flooding.

His visit to Missouri was the second in a month, underscoring the importance of this state to Obama's hopes for the November election. Last month, he visited Cape Girardeau, Mo., a Republican stronghold.

At Barnes-Jewish Hospital, the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate chatted with several nurses about medical procedures and talked with some patients about their health insurance coverage. Among the patients was Raymond Bisher, 52, who retired as a St. John police officer after being diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 1998.

In a lengthy conversation, Bisher told Obama how Bisher's wife worked two jobs in spite of suffering from rheumatoid arthritis herself. One of Bisher's four sons is a soldier in Iraq.

Obama paid special attention when Bisher said his wife's weekly medical treatment consists of weekly shots costing $1,500 a piece.

Obama responded, "That's $6,000 a month. Wow." He then promised Bisher that health care would be a "big priority" if he's elected president. As he departed, he told Bisher, "Your wife sounds like a good woman... You tell your son we're thinking of him and praying for him in Iraq."

At the Democratic fundraiser the night before at St. Louis' Renaissance Hotel, Obama was greeted by a variety of his supporters for himself as well as rival Hillary Rodham Clinton's supporters. To underscore the importance of unity in the campaign, Rachel Storch, who headed the Clinton campaign drive in Missouri, introduced him.

The message from Storch and Obama was that Democrats have put any animosity from the presidential primaries behind them and were united to win the White House in November.

At the fundraiser, Obama paid tribute to Clinton and thanked backers who had supported his candidacy from the beginning. He called Sen. Claire McCaskill, one of his strongest supporters, "somebody you want in a foxhole." She and Rep. William Lacy Clay did not attend the fundraiser, but sent family members.

According to some reports, the $500 a ticket general reception and the $2,300 VIP reception were expected to generate about $1 million for Obama's campaign.

Obama’s JV Team – Progress Index

When ISIS first began its first acts of terrorism, President Obama called ISIS a "JV Team" and told the world there was nothing to be concerned about. Since then the world has found out just how very wrong Obama was in his description of ISIS. Since then, thousands of innocent people, even children, have lost their lives because of these terrorists Obama described as a "JV Team"! Only time itself will tell the truth about why Obama described this group as unimportant. The question is, was Obama so ignorant of this situation that he did not see or understand the danger this group presented to the world, or was this simply his way of removing attention from ISIS long enough for them to organize and spread unnoticed around the world! How could anyone, much less a president of the United States, call this group a "JV Team" that required no attention? Well, at least President Obama was correct when he called ISIS a "Team"! We will probably never know the answer to that question, but what we do know is that the whole world is now feeling the results of it. ISIS has now become the main topic of terrorist concerns around the world! Instead of killing the people, ISIS instead drove the people from their lands, so that ISIS could infiltrate them unnoticed as they passed into other countries, across once secure borders unnoticed. I also find it very strange that America's once secure Mexican border, all of a sudden, became "unattended' by both the Bush Administration and the Obama Administration.

Both Bush and Obama refused to enforce existing immigration laws that has since resulted in millions of "unknowns" to enter America, along with tons of mind destroying cheap drugs that has now destroyed the minds of an American generation. Never in the history of America has any president of the United States refused to enforce existing immigration laws, designed to prevent exactly what has now happened! The first immediate concern for America's safety today is the elimination of ISIS. You remember, Obama's "JV Team"! The second greatest concern is for the safety of the whole world, concerning Iran's growing nuclear capabilities, and guess what - President Obama was the main player in the development of both these safety concerns!

While Obama was president, he not only eliminated the restrictions that was created to slow down Iran's nuclear development capabilities, he also released Iranian prisoners that were important to Iran's nuclear process. Obama also gave Iran millions of American dollars, some in secrecy in the middle of the night, all of which has resulted in the financing and advancement of Iran's nuclear development and capabilities, that now threatens the safety of the whole world and what appears in the headlines of today's American newspapers - Possibie connection between Donald Trump and the Russians." Go figure! This is what happens when "We The People" refuse to enforce the laws of our Constitution that was given to us for the purpose of limiting the government to control of national defense only. This is what happens when we allow the government to take total control over our entire education system! It not only removes the intelligence from the minds of America's students, it eliminates their ability to even know that it is gone!

Rand Paul: Trump likely has ability to pardon himself – Washington Times

Sen. Rand Paul said Sunday that President Trump likely has the power to pardon himself under the U.S. Constitution.

The Kentucky Republicans interpretation of the Constitution comes after the president tweeted Saturday about having the complete power to pardon, and after The Washington Post reported that Mr. Trump discussed pardons with his advisers.

The question about whether Mr. Trump has the authority to pardon himself is being debated as the investigation into connections between his campaign and the Russian government during the 2016 election heats up.

I think, in all likelihood, he does, Mr. Paul said during an interview on CNNs State of the Union. I think that some of this hasnt been adjudicated.

Mr. Paul said he understands the president is frustrated with the constant allegations of collusion, but he cautioned him from thinking about pardoning family members or himself.

But Jay Sekulow, one of Mr. Trumps lawyers, said the issue would likely end up at the U.S. Supreme Court, and he told ABCs This Week anchor George Stephanopoulos that no one from the legal team is researching pardoning powers for the president.

The issue of pardons is not on the table. Theres nothing to pardon from, Mr. Sekulow said Sunday. Were not researching it, I havent researched it because its not an issue were concerned with or dealing with.

Mr. Trump said in one of his tweets on Saturday: While all agree the U. S. President has the complete power to pardon, why think of that when only crime so far is LEAKS against us.FAKE NEWS.

According to The Post report, Mr. Trump has inquired about the authority he has as president to pardon aides, relatives or even himself.

Congressional lawmakers say Mr. Trumps eldest son and his former campaign chairman wont be forced to testify publicly this week as part of the Russia election meddling investigation. Donald Trump Jr. and former campaign Chairman Paul Manafort are discussing undergoing a private interview with the Senate Judiciary Committee.

The committees chairman, Sen. Charles E. Grassley, Iowa Republican, and top Democrat, Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California, also say they are negotiating with Mr. Trump Jr. and Mr. Manafort about possibly turning over documents.

Jared Kushner, Trumps son-in-law and top White House aide, is scheduled to speak behind closed doors with the Senate Intelligence Committee on Monday and the House intelligence committee on Tuesday.

Mr. Trump defended his son in one of the tweets, saying he openly gave his e-mails to the media & authorities whereas Crooked Hillary Clinton deleted (& acid washed) her 33,000 e-mails!

Mr. Trumps eldest son has become a focus of the investigation after it was revealed that he, Mr. Kushner and Mr. Manafort met with Russian representatives at Trump Tower in June 2016. Mr. Trump Jr. later released email exchanges concerning the meeting on Twitter, after learning that The New York Times was about to publish them.

Libertarians are wary, but sense opportunity under Trump – CNN International

"I have to give thanks to Donald Trump and the Republican Party," said Sarwark, a former defense attorney who has led the Libertarian Party since 2014. "Their success in getting control of government and then showing that they can't do anything once they have that control has been a better argument for joining the Libertarian Party than anything I could say."

As part of his efforts, Sarwark joined more than 1,000 libertarians and conservatives recently here in Las Vegas for a free-wheeling annual gathering called FreedomFest, fertile recruiting grounds where attendees held a robust skepticism of government power and where opinions of President Donald Trump were mixed.

Activities at the four-day confab were varied: One could attend academic lectures on Adam Smith, discussion panels about whether space aliens would be libertarians, debates over open borders and a film festival. You could also listen to a dialogue between actors dressed as Ayn Rand and Benjamin Franklin, watch a speech by actor William Shatner and attend a blowout party for Steve Forbes' birthday.

FreedomFest has been a mainstay of the Las Vegas convention circuit for a decade. But this marked the first gathering of Trump's presidency, which has divided even like-minded communities, including attendees here.

Trump himself made a surprise appearance at this conference in 2015, making it one of his first public appearances after announcing his bid for the presidency. As an example of what was to come, the Republican candidate rambled over 50 minutes, complaining about the media, railing against trade, promoting a wall on the Mexican border and expressing a desire to get along with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Watching the speech at the time, Jeffrey Tucker, the content director at the libertarian Foundation for Economic Education, assumed the crowd would run Trump out of town. He was wrong.

"I thought, nobody's going to buy this. Everything he says is against everything we believe. But by the time he ended, he had won over a substantial number of the crowd, which was a shock," Tucker said. "Libertarians imagine themselves to be intellectually robust and have strength of character, they are as subject as anybody else to be manipulated by the cult of personality and a good sales pitch."

Indeed, reactions to Trump at the conference this year were varied.

There are those, like Sarwark, who have deep concerns about Trump's policies yet sense a opportunities amid the chaos.

Others, like former Libertarian Party Vice Presidential Nominee Wayne Allyn Root, can't get enough joy out of Trump's bombast.

"I love that he's driving liberals insane," said Root, who debated Trucker about Trump at the conference. "They need a straitjacket, a rubber room and a hug from mommy."

But for many who consider themselves libertarians, the main concern is systematic, and larger than the current president. The real issue, they say, is that the presidency has gained too much authority in the first place, and that Trump is merely taking advantage of an inheritance given to him by Republicans and Democrats alike.

To be a libertarian, after all, is to be almost constantly at issue with both ruling parties in some way. Trump may be different, but to them, he's just another American president with too much power.

"He is incompetent. He has passed no significant piece of legislation in 100 days despite his big promises. He is an embarrassment to the American people and around the globe. What we need to do as libertarians is not talk about people, we need to talk about systems and policies," said Nick Gillespie, editor in chief of the libertarian magazine website Reason.com. "If you are a libertarian you should understand that big government is the problem."
