Investor confidence and America’s status as the world’s economic leader are at risk under Trump – CNBC

During his final term as Federal Reserve chairman, Alan Greenspan noted an impediment stifling economies in the former Soviet Union: "legal chaos, rampant criminality, and widespread corruption" reminiscent of the American Wild West.

"Market economies," Greenspan concluded, "require a rule of law."

Suddenly, the words and actions of President Donald Trump are raising questions about that principle here. After attacking the judiciary over his travel ban earlier this year and firing the FBI director investigating his campaign, the president has warned Special Counsel Robert Mueller about his inquiry, ripped his own attorney general and mused about issuing pre-emptive pardons.

There's no sign of direct economic consequences yet, but as he strains the justice system at home and upends American commitments abroad, Trump poses two kinds of risks.

One is to investor confidence in the United States. So far, booming markets have shrugged off momentary sensations, such as the disclosure that his son and campaign chairman sought information to damage Hillary Clinton from a Russian lawyer and Russian spy.

"The right trade has been to ignore political developments," said Mohamed El-Erian, chief economist for Allianz. But El-Erian warns that "a major shock" could rattle that trade.

Whether Trump himself could administer that shock say, by firing Mueller and ending the Russia investigation altogether would depend on how the Republican-controlled Congress reacts. Lawmakers could accept those actions, or challenge a president of their party.

The other risk is to benefits America derives from its status as the world's economic leader. Trump has already unsettled leaders of other advanced economies by casting doubt on the nation's international commitments.

The steadiness of the American political system is what has kept the dollar the world's reserve currency throughout the post World War II era and kept the U.S. the most consistent safe haven for global investment. That, in turn, has assured American businesses ready access to capital, and the federal government an entree to inexpensive financing of budget deficits.

"Most international observers I've encountered are deeply concerned by Trump's lack of interest in or even disdain for the 70-year-old international system that the U.S. led in creating and then adapting," said Robert Zoellick, who served both Presidents Bush in roles including deputy White House chief of staff, deputy secretary of State, and U.S. trade representative before spending five years as president of the World Bank.

Nor are such concerns limited to observers abroad. Zoellick noted that the American president "has now assaulted courts, the intelligence agencies, and the Department of Justice," among others.

"Maybe the military is safe, at least with [Defense Secretary James] Mattis," he concluded. "The core question for America-watchers abroad, and I think for Americans, is how the American system and society cope with Trump."

An erosion of that asset would open opportunities for other economic powers to take advantage. One of them is China, which aims to fill the void created by Trump's abandonment of the Trans-Pacific Partnership.

It's not clear that any other nation has the ability or willingness to embrace America's traditional role as international problem-solver of last resort on challenges including security, public health or humanitarian relief. That, in turn, could impose costs on Americans by damaging the global economy.

One near-term test will be the president's willingness and ability to work with Congress to deliver an increase in the federal debt limit later this year. Failing to do so could imperil the unique credit-worthiness the U.S. enjoys.

Congressional Republicans have displayed a reluctance to take that step, and the White House lacks a clear strategy. Trump's own budget director has asserted that the administration can prioritize debt payments in a crisis.

"The impression abroad is that the U.S. is less dependable," El-Erian said. "What you're seeing is an erosion of the trust that underpins the multilateral system."

The threats Trump has signaled to traditional notions of the rule of law represent the other side of the same coin. As new evidence emerged over the weekend about the Trump campaign's interactions with representatives of Russia, the president asserted via Twitter to his "complete power to pardon."

"He sees 'loyalty' as a personal matter not to American institutions, rule of law, the Constitution, and traditions," Zoellick said. "The U.S. presidents I've known, or read about, viewed the presidency as larger than themselves. I don't believe Trump does."

Philosophers to discuss origins, identity at UB conference – University at Buffalo Reporter

Bioethical arguments related to abortion and embryonic stem cell research often depend on first answering questions of origins. When do humans come into existence? Does fertilization represent creations flash point? Or does existence require the glow of consciousness or perhaps separation from the birth mother?

These questions of our origins, along with discussions pertaining to personal identity, represent the dual themes of this years Romanell Conference (formerly the PANTC Conference) presented by the Department of Philosophy.

Three pre-eminent philosophers will visit UB to defend their positions on these issues as part of the two-day event being held from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. July 28-29 in 280 Park Hall, North Campus, a space unofficially renamed the Theresa Monacelli Conference Room in appreciation of the retired philosophy staff members contributions to previous conferences.

John Lizza, professor of philosophy at Kutztown University; Don Marquis, professor emeritus of philosophy at the University of Kansas; and Marya Schechtman, professor of philosophy at the University of Illinois at Chicago, will each deliver a separate keynote address.

The Romanell Conference, the fifth annual event exploring bioethics and the philosophy of medicine, is free and open to the public. A complete schedule of presenters and their topics is available online.

These issues go right to the heart of the culture wars abortion, control over ones body, sexual identity, personal identity, the social construction of the self and hastening death, says David Hershenov, UB professor of philosophy who joined the keynoters on a panel about personal identity and death at the American Philosophical Associations national meeting last year in Chicago.

This conference will not be a dry philosophical debate.

There is no philosophical consensus on when a human being comes into existence, Hershenov explains.

If we persons were never early mindless embryos, then we couldnt have been harmed by an abortion or embryonic stem cell research that destroys an embryo, he says. Early abortion would be more akin to contraception in that it prevents someone from coming into existence rather than killing an existing individual, preventing them from having a valuable future.

Some philosophers think existence begins two weeks after fertilization when twinning can no longer occur.

If we came into existence before identical twins were formed, then twinning might have involved our deaths as the embryo that we were identical with splits in two.

Other philosophers believe persons are essentially thinking entities, so there is no existence without consciousness.Fertilization in this case cant represent existence since the fetal brain requires 20 weeks of post-fertilization development before it can support consciousness.

There are even some philosophers who believe we dont come into existence until we are separated, or at least separable, from our mothers, he says. They dont think we could ever have been a part of another human being. That would mean there is a larger human being composed of a smaller human being.

Marquis, author of the seminal article Why Abortion is Immoral, believes existence occurs two weeks after fertilization. Schechtman, the most famous promotor of the narrative account of personal identity, has a more fluid belief on existence and is exploring the idea that our origins stretch across the entire pregnancy. Lizza, an expert on death and a proponent of the constitution idea, uses the analogy of a sculptures differences from that of unformed clay. He sees humans as minded beings that dont exist until weve formed the capacity for thought.

The conference will be entertaining for many reasons, including the fact that many of the participants are long-term philosophical rivals, and so quite willing to bluntly and sarcastically express their criticism of each other, Hershenov says.

Other conference highlights include a talk on the transgender category of personal identification by Barry Smith, SUNY Distinguished Professor in the UB Department of Philosophy and director of the National Center for Ontological Research. In addition, Catherine Nolan, affiliate assistant professor of philosophy at the University of Dallas, will discuss intersex children, and Stephen Kershnar, SUNY Fredonia professor of philosophy, will discuss whether physicians deserve the high compensation they receive.

Kershnar is a libertarian, says Hershenov. I suspect he will answer they are entitled to that money and should hardly be taxed.

PewDiePie Draws Pepe the Frog and Other Alt-Right Memes in New Video – Crave Online

Felix PewDiePie Kjelberghas included an illustrationof Pepe the frog, a meme commonly associated with the alt-right,along with other images co-opted by the deeply controversial group, in a new video that continues his run of appealing to divisive online political groups and figures.

In the video PewDiePie uses the gamePasspartout: The Starving Artist to drawa series of illustrations, including one of Pepe the frog, an image that was recognized by the Anti-Defamation League as having been co-opted by white nationalists into a racist hate symbol. Though there are still those who argue that Pepe is simply an innocuous meme, there is no denying the correlation between the illustration and online hate groups, with even its creator having distanced himself from the cartoon as a result of it being widely used by racists online (via The Guardian). The video of alt-right leader Richard Spencer being punched earlier this year also saw the white nationalist wearing a Pepe pin and explaining how it had become a symbol.

The 27-year-old YouTuber also uses the game to draw the autistic screeching meme, popular among anti-feminists online, though he replaces the head of the figure typically featured in the image with the CNN logo, a reference to the ongoing battle between the news station and Donald Trumps presidential administration. He also included the Kekistan flag, a symbol of a tongue-in-cheek fictional religion conjured up by 4chan users in which Pepe is positioned as a spiritual leader.

PewDiePie is YouTubes most-subscribed creator, with him having over 56 million subscribers on the site and a significant youngaudience. At the start of this year a report from the Wall Street Journal condemning anti-Semitic jokes he had used in his videos led to Disney dropping him from its Maker Studios division, while YouTube also cancelled the second season of its YouTube Red reality show, Scare PewDiePie.

In response to this report, PewDiePie apologized for the offense caused by some of his jokes, though continued to argue against the media reporting upon his actions. This anti-media stance struck a chord with many right-wing figures, who began tochampion the YouTubers complaints regarding the mainstream media, with them having also taken a strong stance against many centrist or left-wing outlets during the Trump 2016 campaign, given the large amount of negative reporting upon the then-presidential candidate. Theracist white supremacist site the Daily Stormer later suggested that he was trying to convert his young audience to fascism, with them featuring him on their cover banner alongside the caption the worlds #1 PewDiePie fansite. PewDiePie refuted any allegiance with the alt-right movement as a result.

But PewDiePies recent actions have led many to grow concerned, with him exposing his huge fan base to talking points from a number of divisive political figures; it has been suggested by his criticsthat he is willfully normalizing divisive political stances to his young audience in his output. In one of his recent videos he discussed the myth of the gender pay gap, leading to him being commended online by right-wing conspiracy site InfoWars editor Paul Joseph Watson and former Rebel Media commentatorLauren Southern. He was also requested by Alex Jones to DM him, with the InfoWars creator being most famous for repeatedly claiming that the tragic Sandy Hook shootings were staged (via MediaMatters). PewDiePie briefly followed Jones on Twitter following the message.
