UK Libraries to Host an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon Today … – UKNow (press release)

LEXINGTON, Ky. (March 20, 2017) The University of Kentucky Libraries, along with co-sponsors from the School of Information Science, the Department of Gender and Womens Studies, the School of Art and Visual Studies and the student organizations ACM-W (Association of Computing Machinery Women's Chapter) and LISSO (Library and Information Science Student Organization), will host an Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon today (Monday), March 20. The event, which individuals may drop by for any period of time, will take place from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.at Lucille Caudill Little Fine Arts Library and Learning Center.

This international event is designed to improve coverage of women and the arts onWikipedia and to encourage female editorship. The edit-a-thon will include tutorialsfor the beginner Wikipedian, ongoing editing support, reference materials andrefreshments. People of all gender identities and expressions are invited toparticipate, particularly transgender and cisgender women.

In a 2011 survey, the Wikimedia Foundation found that less than 10 percent of itscontributors identify as female. A lack of female participation has led to a dearthof content about women and art in Wikipedia, but Art+Feminisms edit-a-thons andother initiatives make an impact on the gender gap through crucial improvements toart- and feminism-related subjects. Since 2014, over 280 Art+Feminism WikipediaEdit-a-thons have taken place across the world, creating and improving an estimated4,600 articles.

This will be the second Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon held at the University ofKentucky. The first was held in March 2015, during which participants created orupdated articles about regional artists including Adele Brandeis, Ann StewartAnderson and Jane Burch Cochran.

This year, the UK Libraries edit-a-thon will continue to add and improve articles aboutfemale artists from Kentucky, many of whom currently have no Wikipedia entry, orwhose current entries are brief stubs. The Little Fine Arts Library will bring specializedworks from their collection to aid researchers at the edit-a-thon, such as referencebooks on women artists, exhibition catalogues, and historic dictionaries of artists andnotable women in Kentucky.

The UK Libraries Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon is organized by Abbye Allan,Ida Sell, Karyn Hinkle, Melissa Adler and Kathryn Lybarger. They are excited to bringattention to underrepresented artists from the region and to help make the worldsmost popular online encyclopedia a more inclusive source.

Underground Railroad event steams ahead | The Daily Gazette – The Daily Gazette

CeLillianne Green will deliver the conference's keynote presentation Saturday.

When Paul Stewart and his wife Mary-Liz first began researching the Underground Railroad more than 15 years ago, they had trouble finding a conference where they could broaden their knowledge of black history. So, they decided to start their own.

We wanted to go to a conference somewhere, but we couldnt find any handy or available, said Stewart, who works with the Capital District Community Loan Fund.

We thought the Capital Region would be a great place to host one, so we did it ourselves. We figured out what it would involve and pulled all those pieces together.

Everything came together and its been great, but if you told me 15 years ago that wed still be doing it I would have been shocked.

Stewart and his wife, a retired teacher in the Berne-Knox-Westerlo School District, have hosted their event all around the Capital Region, but this years event, named Liberty Con 2017, will be held Friday and Saturday at Schenectady County Community College. The event concludes on Sunday from 1-4 p.m. with an open house event at the Stephen and Harriet Myers Residence in Albany.

We were a little unsure of just how things would go with the first one, remembered Stewart. But the people turned out, they were really enthusiastic, so we thought we would move forward and do another two or three. This year is No. 16, and we are continuing to fine-tune our event. Much of the time people think were discussing old history with the Underground Railroad, but this year were going to be tackling some of the controversial issues of the day and show how they connect to our history.

The theme of this years conference is Americans at Risk: Race, Denial, Privilege, and Who Matters. To help him start that conversation, Stewart has secured two nationally-known figures in Tim Wise and CeLillianne Green to speak at this years event. Wise, who is white, is an anti-racist speaker and author who was an associate director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism, a major group formed to fight the political aspirations of former Ku Klux Klan leader and white supremacist David Duke. A 1990 graduate of New Orleans, Wise has produced ten books, including Between Barack and a Hard Place: Racism and White Denial in the Age of Obama (2009) and White Lives Matter: Race, Crime and the Politics of Fear in America (2017). Wise will speak Friday at 7 p.m. at the Carl B. Taylor Auditorium.

Green, a black woman, will deliver the keynote presentation on Saturday at 10 a.m. A Pennsylvania native who graduated from Drexel University and Howard University School of Law, she had a 20-year law career before blossoming into a successful poet. Her first poem, Because I Love You, was inspired by Hurricane Katrina and published in 2003.

Greens talk is entitled Crossroads, after a poem in her recently published book, A Bridge: The Poetic Primer on African and African American Experiences.

Theres a line in the poem, America is at a crossroads in what is just and fair, and the unjust road leads to nowhere, said Green. Im going to read the poem, and I also intend to analyze it for the purposes of exploring the theme of the conference.

We are at a crossroads. Things get me riled up, but I try to maintain a sense of calm. I know the creator has a larger plan.

The talks by Wise and Green, according to Stewart, should spark some good discussion.

Traditionally, weve had some major speakers and some workshops, said Stewart. This year were going to have a lot more interactive things going on, like roundtable discussions. Most people are familiar with the 13th Ammendment and how it did something to stop slavery. But what it did was transform slavery. It said, no private person can hold another private person in involuntary servitude. That leaves a big back door for public institutions that led to the Jim Crow system, so were going to be talking about and discussing things that are going on today.

Carolyn Pfeiffer celebrates 50 years with Santa Rosa Woman’s Club – Gulf Breeze News

GFWC Santa Rosa Womans Club members and guests celebrate with Pfeiffer Carolyn Pfeiffer has been a member of the GFWC Santa Rosa Womans Club for 50 years. She became a member when a friend, with whom she was bowling, invited her to join the at-that-time small club. She joined and the next year she became the Clubs Secretary. She has held practically every office in her local club and served three two-year terms as President. From there she graduated into being the District Director and then held offices in the Florida Federation of Womens Clubs.

Santa Rosa Womans Club members were so impressed by Pfeiffers tenure in their club that on March 7, they celebrated these 50 years with her. While planning the celebration they found that club members in other districts wanted to celebrate with Pfeiffer as well. So three guests came from Crestview Womans Club and 4 guests from Fort Walton Womans Club, including the District Director Liaison Betty Boudreau.

Members turn out to hear the IMPACT 100 2017 Membership Drive Numbers. Pfeiffer exclaimed, I felt super honored when the GFWC Santa Rosa Womans Club celebrated with me my 50 years of membership in the Club. They gave me a beautiful bouquet of flowers, had a cake decorated with our clubs yellow roses with the 50 years and my birthday (which was two days after that) on it, and invited friends from neighboring clubs who came to celebrate with me. I received many congratulations that day, and was much appreciative of all the good wishes by my friends.

From early membership in this organization, Pfeiffer participated in many charitable projects not only locally but also statewide and nationwide. She says, But the most important thing to me is that I have made many true friends from all over, which all started from my local club membership.

Shia LaBeouf’s ‘He Will Not Divide Us’ anti-Trump flag has come to Liverpool – The Tab

It had to flee America and Mexico because of neo-Nazis

On the day of Trumps inauguration, Shia LaBeouf began a project where the public [was] invited to deliver the words HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US into a camera mounted on a wall outside the Museum of the Moving Image, New York, repeating the phrase as many times, and for as long as they wish, as a stand of opposition and optimism against the controversial 45th President.

After being abandoned and relocated to a second, unknown location, the project added a livestream of a flag reading HE WILL NOT DIVIDE US showing.

Today, after yet another relocation, the flag has come to Liverpool and was brought by none other than FACT, the gallery at which Shia Labeouf performed another exhibition last year.

Shia, Luke Turner and Nastja Rnko, the artists behind the campaign, said it was moved asevents have shown that America is simply not safe enough for this artwork to exist.

A press release details the journey of the campaign accross countries:

During the initial weeks of the project, the installation was subjected to constant disruption and hate speech by far-right extremists, and a lack of institutional support. On 10 February, the museum removed the camera without the artists knowledge or consent. On 18 February, the artists relocated the work to Albuquerque, where the community continued an enthusiastic engagement and participation in the piece. However, due to disruption by neo-Nazis, and after gunshots were fired in the vicinity, although unrelated to the project, the artists were unable to continue to keep the installation open to the public.

On 8 March, the project moved to an unknown location, where the work was adapted to its present form, accessible solely through the online stream. Following escalating threats and criminal activity coordinated via online message boards 4chan and 8chan, which included the theft and defacement of the artwork by white supremacists, and a field at the location being set on fire, the artists have now been forced to site the project outside of the United States.

Alt-right users on 8chan, an imageboard site and forum site, have started plans to disrupt the flag. They speculate that the flag sits on a roof of what looks like a five-story building.

They want to send drones with knives attached to them to cut down the flag, while others suggest attaching a green paint bomb to the drone to ruin the flag green to apparently represent the Pepe the frog meme. Theyre even going so far as to discuss physically getting on to the building to replace the flag with one of their own.

Liverpools a pretty big city, but based on Shias history with the city, you can probably guess where the flag is flying.
