Rand Paul: GOP Senate takeover isn't certain

Sen. Rand Paul, R-Ky., makes comments during a meet and greet along with North Carolina Republican Senatorial candidate Thom Tillis at Big Eds City Market in Raleigh, N.C., Wednesday, Oct. 1, 2014. Paul is helping North Carolina Republican Senate candidate ... more >

Sen. Rand Paul is not confident the GOP will win enough seats to take control of the Senate next month, saying that while Republicans will win three seats being left open by Democratic retirements, others are tougher to predict.

Theres at least three states that were going to pick up, West Virginia, South Dakota and Montana. Theres five or six states that hang in the balance beyond that, Mr. Paul said Tuesday during an interview with Fox News Sean Hannity.

Mr. Paul said Senate races in Iowa, Alaska, Arkansas and Louisiana that seem to favor Republican candidates may be too close to call.

This will be one of those elections were you have to count the votes and stay up late, Mr. Paul said.

The libertarian-leaning Republican, who is considering a 2016 presidential bid, said President Obamas decline in popularity would help Republicans at the polls and blasted Mr. Obamas foreign policy leadership.

Mr. Paul campaigned in North Carolina last week with GOP Senate candidate Thom Tillis and said he plans to travel to Kansas later in the month to stump with Sen. Pat Roberts who is facing a tough re-election race.

Sen. Rand Paul to speak at Sinquefield think-tank fundraiser in St. Louis

JEFFERSON CITY U.S. Sen. Rand Paul will be speaking at a fundraiser Thursday put on by a think tank co-founded by St. Louis billionaire Rex Sinquefield.

The Show-Me Institute's fundraiser, Freedom Celebration, will be in St. Louis. Individuals can have a private round table discussion with the Republican senator from Kentucky for a $5,000 donation. A reception will be held for donors of at least $250.

In a video on its website, Director of Development David Stokes said Paul, who is contemplating a presidential bid in 2016, "should be an outstanding speaker."

The institute has advocated, for example, the elimination of teacher tenure and school choice. It reported individual donations of $1.66 million last year.
