Fla. Congressman Joe Garcia: Communism works

Rep. Joe Garcia (D., Fla.) of Florida suggested communism works while discussing the U.S.-Mexico border and the amount of money and federal government jobs that are offered in border towns such as El Paso, Texas.

The safest city in America is El Paso, Texas. It happens to be across the border from the most dangerous city in the Americas, which is Juarez. Right? Garcia asked a Google Hangout participant.

Two of the safest cities in America are on the border with Mexico. Of course, the reason is weve proved that communism works. If you give everybody a good government job, there is no crime, Rep. Garcia said.

It should be noted thatRep. Garcia has had a rough two weeks. Last week, he was exposed foreating his own ear wax.

Dem Rep. Joe Garcia in Hot Water for Communism Works Remark

Rep. Joe Garcia (D-FL) mocked Republicans position on border security and economic theory in a recent online discussion with constituents by citing the situation on the American border with Mexico. He said that among the safest cities in America are those on the border where most residents are government employees. Communism works, he declared.

Weve proved that Communism works, Garcia said. Laughing at Republicans for spending on border security that creates employment opportunities, he added, If you give everybody a good government job, theres no crime.

Garcia went on to say, however, that America should not be spending so heavily on border security because the returns on that investment are diminishing.

The video of Garcias remarks were quickly put up online by the conservative America Rising PAC. When asked by the Miami Heralds Marc Caputo for a clarification of his comments, Garcia expressed indignation at the characterization of his remarks as a literal endorsement of communism.

This is an absurdity, accusing the son of Cuban immigrants of believing in Communism is just ridiculous, the congressman said. When asked if he should have been clearer in his comments, Garcia said conservative groups would have posted the video anyway.

Garcia made national headlines last week when cameras caught him seemingly eating his earwax during a House Judiciary Committee hearing.

How American capitalism is falling behind

Putting ideology aside, the practical choice isnt between capitalism and 'welfare-state socialism,' Reich writes. Its between a system thats working for a few at the top, or one thats working for just about everyone.

For years Americans have assumed that our hard-charging capitalism is better than the soft-hearted version found in Canada and Europe. American capitalism might be a bit crueler but it generates faster growth and higher living standards overall. Canadas and Europes welfare-state socialism is doomed.

It was a questionable assumption to begin with, relying to some extent on our collective amnesia about the first three decades after World War II, when tax rates on top incomes in the U.S. never fell below 70 percent, a larger portion of our economy was invested in education than before or since, over a third of our private-sector workers were unionized, we came up with Medicare for the elderly and Medicaid for the poor, and built the biggest infrastructure project in history, known as the interstate highway system.

But then came Americas big U-turn, when we deregulated, de-unionized, lowered taxes on the top, ended welfare, and stopped investing as much of the economy in education and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, Canada and Europe continued on as before. Soviet communism went bust, and many of us assumed European and Canadian socialism would as well.

Thats why recent data from theLuxembourg Income Study Databaseis so shocking.

The fact is, were falling behind. While median per capita income in the United States has stagnated since 2000, its up significantly in Canada and Northern Europe. Their typical workers income is now higher than ours, and their disposable income after taxes higher still.
