Democrats say democracy under threat from Koch brothers

July 11, 2012: House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi speaks on Capitol Hill in Washington.AP

Leading congressional Democrats on Tuesday said democracy was under threat from the Koch brothers at a screening of a new film critical of the powerful political duo.

A seven-minute clip of the film, Koch Brothers Exposed, was shown at the event, held at the Congressional Visitors Center. Film director Robert Greenwald, the president of Brave New Films, which produced the film, said it was inspired by Jane Mayers critical article on the Kochs in the New Yorker.

What (the Koch brothers) do with their money isnt fine with me, declared Senate Majority Harry Reid in one clip in the documentary. He added that the Kochs want to do away with government.

The film takes aim at the father of the Koch brothers, suggesting he was a racist and also profited from dealings with the Soviets.

"If the Koch brothers can buy the Senate, what's next -- gonna buy a president?" Reid said at the end of the clip.

After the clip of the film was shown, Reid addressed the attendees.

Were here because theyre trying to buy our democracy, said Reid, a frequent critic of the Koch brothers. "But they can't shut down free speech, though the Supreme Court has done a good job of it.

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi added, Our founders wanted a democracy, a government of the many -- not of the money."

People know these are not people who share their values about safety in our economy and fairness. They have an agenda," she said.

FG to celebrate Democracy Day despite bombings

The Federal Government on Wednesday said despite the prevailing state ofinsecurity in parts of the country, it would go ahead to celebrate the Democracy Day on May 29 in a big way.

Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku, disclosed this while briefing State House correspondents of the outcome of the weekly Federal Executive Council meeting presided over by President Goodluck Jonathan.

Maku who had earlier said the council condemned the latest bombings recorded in Kano and Jos insisted that despite the distractions by terrorists, the country had witnessed tremendous developments in all sectors under the present administration.

He said the position of government was that May 29 was a good opportunity to showcase what the government had done in the areas of road construction, aviation, agriculture and other sectors.

He said, The council today discussed programmes for May 29, the third anniversary of the election of President Jonathan.

It is also a reminder that our democracy ha come of age and it is in fact the first time in the history of our country that we will be running a democratic system continuously for 15 years.

In spite of all the distractions of terror which tempt us to loose confidence in ourselves and in our democracy, we believe that in the last four years, the country has witnessed momentus development in all sectors of our economy as a result of the Presidents transformation agenda.

As we witnessed in the road, aviation, agriculture and other sectors, there have been tremendous work on the development of our country in spite of the terror attacks.

One of the intentions of the terror attacks is to ensure that we turn our attention away from issues of development. We can only defeat terror by deepening democracy and improving in infrastructure.

In the last four years, the administration has done so much for the economy of Nigeria in terms of investment and support for industries. Today, the economy is growing in spite of all the distractions.

GOP super PAC accuses Cuban congressman of endorsing Communism

MIAMI, May 21 (UPI) --A video of Florida Congressman Joe Garcia saying "Communism works" is circulating online after it was released by far-right super PAC America Rising. This is the second video of Garcia released by the super PAC, after an edited C-SPAN video of him picking his ear made headlines last week. Garcia is running for reelection in the fall.

The new clip comes from a Google hangout, where Garcia was discussing lingering racism problems within the Republican Party that handcuff it from passing meaningful immigration legislation. The specific quote came as he was explaining the unintended effects of over-funding border security.

"The safest city in America is El Paso, Texas," Garcia said. "It happens to be across the border from the most dangerous city in the America's, which is Juarez. Right?"

Garcia called it "absurd" that this would be misconstrued as an endorsement of communism, telling the Miami Herald, "accusing the son of Cuban immigrants of believing in Communism is just ridiculous."

Far-right blogs are attempting to paint the re-contextualized video as a "gaffe." However, objective news outlets are reporting the entire quote.
