COEUR d'ALENE - When the Kootenai Humane Society needed a new development coordinator, word went out.

One name came back that caught the attention of Rondi Renaldo, KHS executive director.

Nicol Barnes.

"We were beyond thrilled to have her application, to have somebody that's already involved in the community, has 14 years of experience, truly knows and cares about being involved in a nonprofit," Renaldo said. "Her heart lies in helping people and animals."

Barnes is a familiar name and sight through North Idaho because for the past 14 years she's been at the American Cancer Society, where she was the community relations manager.

That meant she was in charge of fundraising, and her new title at KHS means the same thing. She'll be out meeting people, making calls, sending letters and notes, arranging events, making appointments, all on behalf of the dogs and cats of the shelter at the end of Ramsey Road.

The Coeur d'Alene High School graduate doesn't get a fancy office or company car or six figure salary. What she does get, and what matters most to her, is the chance to make a difference for the 150 or so cats and dogs in kennels and cages.

"We're all in this together to make it better," she said.

What brings you to the Kootenai Humane Society?

I love animals. That was a big draw for me.

How do you like things so far?

It's good. It's challenging, learning how the humane society works and what my role is, what I've got to get done. I'm just kind of diving in head first.

What are your responsibilities?

Fundraising. I'm in charge of fundraising.

How do you do that well?

You really have to think about it. You can't just run out there and throw everything together. You have to have a plan and be efficient about what you're doing. Hopefully, I can help bring that to the table.

Will it be difficult in this economy?

I don't think it's going to be a huge challenge. There's a lot of people in the community that already support the humane society and want to continue to do that. I just want to come in and help build up the events they've had and they're continuing, come in and help keep those going and make them bigger and better.

I'll be in charge of the two major events we do. One is Tails at Twilight and that's in July. And then Roaming with Rover, which will be in June.

With 14 years of fundraising at ACS, are you confident you'll be able to have the same success at KHS?

I think so. Their events have already proven that. They already have well established events. I'm coming in and hopefully helping, keeping it going, bringing in new thoughts, ideas, making things bigger, better. I definitely have a lot of experience.

How do you relate the story of KHS and its animals to people?

I've been working with The Press 14 years. That was one of the first things I did when I got on at ACS, go to The Press and introduce myself. And I got to work with Roy Wellman. He sort of took me under his wing. I came in completely fresh, not knowing much. He gave me tips on how to do an ad, how to prepare information for The Press, how to make it easy for The Press, get the story to the reporters. I've had a great relationship with The Press ever since.

Did you have pets growing up?

I did. Dogs, cats.

So you've always had a heart for animals?

I love animals. I'm not as passionate about it as maybe some people are, but I love all animals. I'm one of those kind of people, I really believe in being a responsible animal owner. I don't own an animal right now because I can't afford it. If you can't afford to feed your dog, you shouldn't have one.

I'm real big on education. We have a program where we go into schools, kindergarten through fifth grade, educate kids on responsible pet ownership. I just know there's so many animals out there that aren't treated well.

What can be done about the mistreatment of animals?

That's the thing that gets me the most, when people don't treat animals well. They're abandoned, not taken care of, and we end up with them.

The good thing is, they get amazing care here. They're loved and cared for. They're so incredible with the animals here. That's the big thing for me, being passionate about people taking care of their animals and being responsible.

Do you get a chance to visit the shelter animals very often?

I go in every day, two or three times. I like to make the rounds and say hello to all the animals. My goal is to take a dog for a walk every day to get some exercise for me and the dog.

What's one thing you would want people to know about KHS?

The biggest thing is, these dogs and cats are amazing animals. All they want to do is love, so think of us when it comes to adopting or donating.

THEY'RE sexy, sassy, fun and know their music.

Female DJs are hot music property and the latest act making noise is Sydney's The Faders, joining the ranks of Havana Brown, Anna Lunoe and The Nervo Twins.

"Being a female DJ is definitely a point of difference and makes it more exciting to watch," says The Faders' Milly Gattegno.

"People either love you or they hate you. We've never claimed to be the best technical DJs in the world, but we do it because we love music and we have fun, and I think that shows when we perform."

The Faders - Gattegno and her musical partner Suhana Lye - have built up a strong fanbase with their take on hip hop, R&B and party beats.

Over the past three years, they've played small to large venues across Sydney and toured the country with festivals.

They're also rumoured to be close to signing a lucrative deal with Universal Music, which would make them labelmates with Havana Brown.

"We completely fell into this," said Gattegno, who met Lye when the pair worked at MTV Australia.

"A friend was putting on a night for people in the industry and we did that, and from that night a whole bunch of gigs starting coming through.

"We never had a lesson and just taught ourselves on the spot."

Gattegno says the pair look up to indie DJ favourite Anna Lunoe and Melbourne-based DJ M.A.F.I.A, along with Brown, who has taken on the pop charts over the past year since the release of her debut single We Run The Night peaked at No.5 on the ARIA Singles Chart and follow-up track Get It was a big radio hit.

She's now gaining traction in America, with her music on high rotation on commercial stations across the US, including the country's biggest radio station Z100 in New York. "I rock up to a gig in my high heels and mini-skirt; I am very girlie," Brown told Insider last year, saying her music speaks for itself.

"But I love music and I know what I am doing: people see that when I play."

Former Aussie model sister duo Mim and Liv Nervo have also made their mark on the international music scene.

They tour the world constantly and are regulars in dance music mecca Ibiza as well as Las Vegas.

Their biggest break came when American pop star Kelly Rowland teamed up with David Guetta on their track When Love Takes Over.

They're now in hot demand - working with Ke$ha, Britney Spears and Kylie Minogue and have just agreed to do a project with Groove Armada, although they admit they nearly gave up music before smashing the charts with When Love Takes Over.

"We were living above a video store and cramming as many people as we could into this two-bedroom flat to keep the rent down," Liv tells Insider of surviving in London before the hit, which won Guetta a Grammy Award.

Being a female DJ has its benefits, says Live.

"I don't think there are many girls doing what we do," she says.

"We have been lucky enough to work with people who have really launched careers, like Ke$ha.

"We have been involved in the crossover aspect.

"Our parents say, 'Do you really do this for a job - is this really a job? Are you making enough money now?"'

Mim adds: "We tell them: 'Mum and Dad, we're finally off the breadline.' We love every five-star hotel we stay in. We used to slum it and save our pennies to get the buses out to the airports and stayed in really crappy, crappy hotels.

"But every day we are pinching ourselves and it means we are on a constant high."

Iced over... frozen sea at Sandbanks

The big freeze gripped ­Britain yesterday with the coldest day of winter so far – and Heathrow Airport grounded almost a third of flights before a single ­snowflake fell.

As temperatures tumbled as low as -12C and up to 15cm of snow was dumped on parts of the country, furious air passengers were left stranded.

Heathrow’s Spanish-owned operator BAA triggered anger after cancelling around 200 flights at 2pm yesterday - even though snow wasn’t due for another two hours.

The decision means that flights of up to 18,000 travellers could be rescheduled or cancelled as the big freeze grips Britain.

The cancellations brought back bitter memories of Christmas 2010 when Heathrow shut for five days.

BAA spent £32million boosting its snow plough fleet after a damning report. But last night one runway was closed and planes were only allowed to land, with none taking off. Stansted, Luton and Birmingham airports also closed last night as temperatures dropped. A spokesman for Heathrow said: “We deeply regret any disruption caused to passengers by the cold weather.

“Reducing the flight schedule means we can fly as many people as possible and return the airport to normal as quickly as possible.”

The chaos came a day after London mayor Boris Johnson said: “Across our roads and rails hundreds of workers are on standby to ensure that, should we receive a mega deposit of snow, we are in a position to keep the c­apital moving.”

The coldest place in the country was South Newington in Oxfordshire at -12.4C.

The big freeze is the result of a mild front from the Atlantic ­colliding with cold air. Even the sea in Poole Harbour, Dorset, froze over as the temperature overnight fell to -7C. A cross-channel ferry had to crack its way through the ice to get out.

Sennybridge, South Wales, shivered in -8.6C, while further north, snow blanketed Manchester, turning rooftops of homes white as ­temperatures hovered around -2C.

The Met Office's amber alert – the second highest possible – went out as snow swept over West England and Wales at midday, before moving across the Midlands to ­southern and eastern areas last night. A Met Office spokesman said: “We are ­experiencing the coldest snap of winter. The big danger could come on Sunday night and Monday ­morning when the snow turns to rain while ­temperatures stay the same – which will create ­treacherous driving ­conditions.”

The Arctic weather caused havoc for motorists as the AA reported 16,000 ­breakdowns – almost double the 8,500 it usually gets on a Saturday.

AA spokesman Gavin Hill-Smith said: “We see travel becoming harder as snow clears and the rain freezes, causing terrible ­conditions. We are concerned that the rain will wash away grit and cause real ­issues for motorists.”

And more than twice as many central ­heating boilers are expected to pack up this weekend than usual because of the freezing temperatures, ­according to British Gas. They are predicting 50,000 call-outs, compared to an ­average of 20,000 on a typical winter weekend.

Several sporting fixtures were called off but Stoke's game against Sunderland was played with snow falling throughout – meaning the pitch's white lines had to be painted blue.

Average temperatures are expected to stay ­below 2C until Tuesday when slightly warmer weather is ­predicted. The freeze has also affected the Continent. Spain has been hit by the ­coldest weather in more than three decades. Majorca and Ibiza endured temperatures of -10C and were battered by gale-force winds.
