Quentin Tarantino Drops N-Word At Golden Globes

Quentin Tarantino isn't unaccustomed to seeing his name at the center of controversy and even as a big winner at the Golden Globes, the filmmaker couldn't walk away without stirring the pot.

The "Django Unchained" writer-director won the Golden Globe for Best Screenplay on Sunday evening, but attention quickly turned to the film's controversial use of the N-word when Tarantino spoke with press after winning his award. According to both The Hollywood Reporter and E! Online, Tarantino engaged the conversation by using the N-word, to the silence and awkward whistling of onlookers.

Tarantino reportedly argued that his critics are "saying I should massage. They're saying I should whitewash. They're saying I should lie," adding, "I would never do that when it comes to my characters." The director's comments on Golden Globes night reflect what he told MTV News while doing press for "Django Unchained."

"I think it's kind of ridiculous, because no one can actually say with a straight face that we use the word more than it was used in 1858 in Mississippi. So since they can't say that, what they're basically [saying] is I should lie," Tarantino said regarding the racially-charged language spoken in his award-winning film. "I should pretty it up. I should lie, and I don't lie when it comes to my characters and the stories I tell."

Tarantino's "Django" walked away from the Golden Globes with victory in writing and acting categories. (Christoph Waltz won the Best Supporting Actor prize.) While the film was nominated for Best Picture, and while he won for his screenplay, Tarantino was not recognized as a nominee in the directing category. Despite the lack of acknowledgement in that field, star Kerry Washington told MTV News that the filmmaker still has a lot to be proud of.

"When a film gets nominated for Best Picture film is such a collaborative experience, and that nomination really is for everybody, and especially our fearless leader, Quentin," she said. "He can own all of those nominations as his."

Quentin Tarantino at the Golden Globes

Quentin Tarantino professed his shock at winning the Golden Globe for best screenplay, then proceeded to shock the press backstage.

Addressing the unending conversation over the 100-plus times the characters in his slavery-themed spaghetti Western Django Unchained use the N-word, Tarantino himself uttered the phrase, to audible gasps from the scribes in the winners room.

"They think I should soften it, that I should lie, that I should massage." Tarantino said, referring to writers and filmmakers, including Spike Lee, who have criticized his use of the slur in the film. The film's setting of 1860 antebellum South, he said, made that impossible, as did his artistic integrity. "I would never do that when it comes to my characters," Tarantino added.

It's a point he's made before.

"Not one word of social criticism that's been leveled my way has ever changed one word of any script or any story I tell," he told THR late last month. "I believe in what I'm doing wholeheartedly and passionately. It's my job to ignore that."

He also pointed out Sunday that slavery is still going on across the globe -- "go to Malaysia" -- and that the U.S. legal system has a bias against African-Americans.
