GEORGE TOWN: THE DAP-led state government's directive for organizers to obtain approval before using the word "Penang" in the names of their events has drawn criticism from various quarters.

"This is something coming from a learned person. I just don't know what to say.

"I cannot stand it anymore. They (the DAP) already gave me the biggest joke of the year when they changed the party's Central Executive Committee's (CEC) results and now they are giving me the second biggest joke of the year (with this)."

Teng, who is also Gerakan secretary-general, said the word "Penang" belonged to all Penangites and not just Guan Eng.

"We will continue to use the word. The state government can serve us an injunction if they want."

Guan Eng's directive yesterday followed the state government's issue against the Penang Run 2013, which is being jointly-organized by non-governmental organization Tanjung Social Club and the Penang Forward Sports Club this Sunday.

The run coincides with Thaipusam and has already drawn criticism from Deputy Chief Minister II and Hindu Endowment Board chairman Dr P. Ramasamy, who accused the organizers of being "insensitive" to the Hindu community. The Penang DAP Socialist Youth (Dapsy) has also demanded that the event be called off.

As the issue developed, Guan Eng yesterday told a press conference that the state government's approval must be obtained first before anyone could use the word "Penang" for their event names.

Guan Eng was quoted as saying that "it is always assumed that any event with the word 'Penang' is organized by the state government."

Earlier, Teng also hit out at Ramasamy, who reportedly accused Gerakan of being involved in the Penang Run 2013.

Event organisers must get state approval to use ‘Penang’

By Opalyn Mok

GEORGE TOWN, Jan 21 Organisers must get approval from the state first if they plan to use the word Penang in their events, said Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng.

This applies to any event organised by private organisations that are held in Penang, he said.

This is to avoid any confusion by the public as it is always assumed that any event with the word Penang is organised by the state government, he said.

Lim (picture) was denying the state governments involvement in a Penang Run event that has drawn criticism from the Hindu community as it would be held on Thaipusam day, which is celebrated on a grand scale in the state.

The event organiser did not get the states sanction to use the word Penang and the event is misleading as the public assumed it was organised by the state government, he said.

He claimed the state had received a deluge of complaints from the public and Hindu community over the sporting event being held on Thaipusam, a day that is considered sacred by the Hindus.

We are not discouraging sporting events but in view of the complaints we have received, we have to deny that the state government has anything to do with it at all, he told a press conference today.

Lim said that while it was acceptable for years-old events to use Penang in their names, new events such as the Penang Run must first gain approval before applying the word.

Lim, who said the flyer for the event showed that it was supported by the federal governments Penang Youth and Sports Department, then called on Putrajaya to be more sensitive to the Hindu community.

Every day we receive boatloads of great reader tips in our inbox, but for various reasonsmaybe they're a bit too niche, maybe we couldn't find a good way to present it, or maybe we just couldn't fit it inthe tip didn't make the front page. E1M0 discovers a small trick for remembering which earphone goes in which ear:

If you have a set of iPhone earbuds (with a remote), the remote is always on the right. This in common knowledge for most people, and yet it is useful for determining which ear to put your buds in. At night, if you sleep on your side, it can be uncomfortable to have both phones in your ears.

It makes sense then, to lay with your right ear up, allowing you easy access to the built in remote, thereby saving your eyes from the glaring screens of your gadgets. And as you only have one earbud in, it is sensible to go into accessibility settings, and turn on mono audio, so you are not missing the track for the left ear. While you are there, feel free to set a triple press of the home button to toggle white on black, making most apps easier on the eyes at night.

Ellie finds a strange fix for her misbehaving Nikon:

I have a Nikon D90 camera, and while it's fantastic, I'd been having a problem. The autofocus stopped working and no matter what I could do, for months I couldn't get it to work again. I tried turning it off and on again (with multiple different switches that seemingly control the same feature), turning it off, resetting to factory settings, and nothing worked. I stumbled on this old MacRumors thread that recommended disconnecting the lens and putting it back on. What do you know: everything went back to normal after doing so.

Pollution becoming a dirty word in China

The Irish Times - Tuesday, January 22, 2013

Clifford Coonan

Pollution is out of control in China right now. Daily readings show it going off the charts, the Chinese newspapers are full of it and people are concerned about what environmental degradation means for their health and that of their children.

The government has not gone into the possible economic impact of pollution, but the very fact that authorities are revealing data at all is a positive sign in itself as for years the default setting has been to block any efforts to cover the real extent of the problem.

Opening up

There have been several signs of a new kind of openness in China about sensitive issues in the past few months since the end of the 18th Communist Party Congress in November, which appointed Xi Jinping as leader. The government appeared to bow to demands by journalists at Southern Weekend newspaper over censorship.

Incoming President Xi, who has already been confirmed head of the Communist Party and the army, and Premier Li Keqiang they are set to be confirmed in March have indicated a willingness to reform to help cope with a rack of financial, industrial and income imbalances that threaten Chinas future.

During last weeks press conference by the National Bureau of Statistics, top official Ma Jiantang announced new official estimates for the Gini coefficient of nationwide household income.

For years critics have complained that China never released a Gini coefficient. It stood at 0.474 in 2012, down from 0.477 in 2011 and from a peak of 0.491 in 2008, Ma told reporters.

While conceding that the Gini was relatively large, the very fact that it is being reported at all is significant.
