No-tax not better

Published: 2/25/2012 11:25 PM | Last update: 2/26/2012 4:47 PM The world has always been plagued with liars. The bigger the whopper, the more people are apt to believe it. The biggest lie of election year 2010: The Affordable Care Act is a "government takeover" of private healthcare. (Remember Palin's lie about "death panels?") The biggest lie of election year 2012: The Affordable Care Act is a "declaration of war" against religious freedom.

House substitute for SB 177, moved out of the House Taxation Committee and is now up for debate on the House floor. This bill will phase out income tax and income tax deductions/credits plus take hundreds of millions of dollars out of the state highway plan to make ends meet. This will put counties and cities into the position of raising property taxes to fill the loss in state revenue for education and all the programs that help our children and the disadvantaged in our state.

----------advertisement----------- "This proposal has the potential for thousands of Kansas children to slip into poverty should this tax package become law" Shannon Cotsoradis, President and CEO of the nonprofit Kansas Action for Children.

Kansans should support a tax policy that contains a balance of income, property, and sales taxes. This maintains fairness among income groups and provides stability for education, infrastructure, social services, and public safety, which are the things that matter most to the people and businesses of Kansas.

The governor stated his plan would create business expansion and economic prosperity but the truth is quite different according to an article published in Lawrence Journal-World and written by Carl Davis from the Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy, who looked at the research of Arthur Laffer, who is the supporting research for a no-tax concept.

Laffer is tied to California's Proposition 13, which devastated that state. One of Laffer's oversights was no attention to the tremendous natural resources some no-tax states have at their disposal. Two are Alaska and Wyoming which are the two states most dependent on mining/oil and their growth cannot be tied to no-income tax. The nine no-tax states are lagging behind the nine states with the highest income tax rates in economic growth. Most no-tax states are actually doing worse than the national average. Concerning unemployment rate, no-tax states and high tax rate states are basically even. No-tax states aren't experiencing economic growth and lawmakers are cautioned to not expect economies to improve if they join the no-tax or low-tax states.

The economic factors that matter most to families are income levels and finding employment. The states with the highest income tax rates are, in most cases, doing better than the no-tax states. If the economy is really lawmakers' concerns, they can put the income tax issues at rest. The research does not support it.

UK's Branson Beats Porn Cybersquatter

An Australian man who tried to register a porn domain using the name of Virgin boss Sir Richard Branson has been ordered to hand it over to the British entrepreneur.

Sean Truman registered the 'richardbranson.xxx' domain in December, making use of the controversial new 'xxx' porn suffixes that finally went on sale to the public last December after ICANN's board approved the idea in June 2010.

Richard BransonAfter Branson complained, the US-based National Arbitration Forum (NAF), which ICANN uses to adjudicate on web domain disputes, has ruled that Truman had no rights to use the domain because of the inevitable public association with its famous namesake.

"The Respondent is using the fame of the Complainant's mark improperly to increase traffic to the website listed at the Domain Name for commercial gain. Such conduct constitutes bad faith," NAF said in its lengthy ruling.

Truman was said to have used richardbranson.xxx as a landing page for links to pay-per-click adult content.

"The domain name is in effect a souvenir, and the respondent has no plans or intentions to host a website using the name," Truman had claimed in his defence.

Advocates of the .xxx domain in the Internet industry will have heaved a sigh of relief that Branson won, by no means certain after it emerged that he had not registered 'Richard Branson' as a trademark.

A defeat would have been a publicity disaster for ICANN, which has gone to some lengths to promote a dispute resolution framework that allows people to use new domains such as .xxx without encouraging the abuse and squatting that critics said was bound to occur.

The criticism remains that Branson has still had to go to some expense to defend himself against a single individual registering a domain in a speculative way at very little cost.

"Virgin Group treats the use of its and Sir Richard's name on the web very seriously and we ensure that there are no unauthorised sites operating that will confuse customers," said Nick Fox speaking on behalf of Branson.

In August, UK registrar Easyspace released figures showing that only 20 percent of the pre-registrations for the .xxx domain were from businesses involved in porn, with the other 80 percent being made by companies simply trying to protect trademarks from abuse.

Perth Amboy officials ask N.J. DOT to install fences on deadly bridge

Patti Sapone/The Star-LedgerThe Victory Bridge connected Perth Amboy to Sayreville has been the scene of 22 suicide attempts in the past eight years.

PERTH AMBOY — Perth Amboy officials are asking the state Department of Transportation to install barriers on the Victory Bridge after a recent suicide attempt, according to a report on MyCentralJersey.com.

Twenty-two people have attempted to kill themselves by jumping off the 110-foot structure since it was opened in 2004, the report said. The Perth Amboy city council passed a resolution last week to urge Gov. Chris Christie and the Legislature to build a protective fence, which would cost an estimated $2 million.

The Route 35 bridge connecting Perth Amboy to Sayreville features four suicide helpline signs, in English and Spanish, which are the first of their kind on any state bridges, according to the report.

Dot Com Pho Orange County has been enjoying double digit attendance for the past few months. This week, I really wanted to step it up and set a new record.

I offered a free copy of my book, Make Money Online: Roadmap of a Dot Com Mogul, to anyone who showed up. You figured I would flood Pho Ba Co with people, right? Not exactly. We had a grand total of four people attending. I guess people in the OC just don’t like to read! Jeff from TIME OC did pass by 90 minutes later but by that time, Oscar had left, so we were still left at four.

On this edition of Dot Com Pho OC, we meet the man who is wearing a bow tie everyday for a year. He even has a blog about it. We also checked out some cool rides at Cars and Coffee, including the incredible Bugatti Veyron Super Sport. This is the world’s fastest production car. It has a 1200HP W16 motor that can push the big Bug to 268MPH! Yours for only $2.3 million. Enjoy!
