Ukraine is a country fraying at the seams. With a contentious referendum in the East of the country now over, Ukraine has moved closer to complete disintegration and civil war.
This is a News Analysis from NBC News Chief Global Correspondent Bill Neely.
Carried out amid deadly clashes, this was no ordinary referendum.
It was run by separatists, who decided the question on the ballot paper. They also counted the votes and announced a result - 89 percent in favor of separating from Ukraine - though what that means remains unclear: the ballot left open the possibilities for independence, separation or unity with Russia.
How the separatists arrived at that result is even less apparent: There were no valid electoral lists, many ballot papers were photocopies and there were reports of voters casting multiple ballots. There also were no international observers.
Despite all of this the separatists claimed a 75 percent turnout - hard to imagine given that there were so few polling stations. Mariupol, a city of half a million people, had just four voting centers.
Many citizens of Mariupol and other cities in eastern Ukraine boycotted the vote. Others, shaken by recent spasms of violence, were too scared to cast their ballots.
Regardless - the referendum is now recorded as fact, drawing further lines between all sides in an already tense climate.
Ukraines President Oleksandr Turchynov says the vote was a farce. The problem is, neither he nor his government were voted into office they took power by force.
He and the separatists in the East are taking turns calling each other illegitimate, branding each move the other takes as unlawful.

Ukraine Moves Closer to Civil War After Flawed Referendum
Ukraine must grant autonomy to ethnic Hungarians living there, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban said, adding to demands on the leadership in Kiev thats trying to fight off pro-Russian separatists in the countrys east.
Ethnic Hungarians living in western Ukraine, who Orban says number about 200,000, must be granted dual citizenship, must enjoy all of the community rights and must be granted the opportunity for autonomy, the Hungarian premier said in a speech in parliament.
Ukrainian troops are battling pro-Russian rebels who are trying to wrest control of the countrys easternmost provinces, which held two disputed referendums yesterday that separatists said backed independence. Unlike the Russian sympathizers who want to break away from Ukraine, Hungary is urging autonomy for its ethnic kin living in countries in the Carpathian basin.
This is our clear expectation of a new Ukraine thats being formed right now, Orban said on May 10 after taking the oath of office following his re-election last month. Ukraine holds a presidential election on May 25.
Hungary has a population of 10 million and an additional 2.5 million Hungarians live beyond the countrys borders in neighboring states, mostly in Romania and Slovakia. They are descendants of Hungarians who lost their citizenship in 1920, when the country lost two-thirds of its territory under the Trianon peace treaty signed in France at the end of World War I.
Ethnic Hungarians are gaining political importance after Orban started extending Hungarian citizenship to them during the past four years. Ninety-five percent of these new voters voted for Orbans ruling party on April 6.
The Hungarian issue is a European issue, Orban told lawmakers. Hungarians in the Carpathian basin have the right to dual citizenship, community rights and autonomy. This is the position which well represent in the international political arena.
Ukraine and its allies accuse Russia of stoking the unrest threatening to rip the former Soviet republic apart. The U.S. and the European Union, of which Hungary is a member, said the referendums on independence in two eastern regions were illegal, while Russia said it respected the results.
Orban took a clear and decisive position on what sort of autonomy he favors for ethnic Hungarians in neighboring countries, Bertalan Havasi, his spokesman, said in an e-mailed response to questions. He didnt provide further details.
