Victorian tea party at Whittier Home in Amesbury July 20 – Wicked Local Newburyport

By Carol FeingoldCorrespondent

Step back in time and enjoy a "Summer Tea in a Victorian Garden" in the garden of The John Greenleaf Whittier Home, 86 Friend St., Amesbury. Set in the historic garden on Thursday, July 20, from 2 to 4 p.m. the Summer Tea is a time to relax, sip tea, enjoy good food, listen to live music, and settle in to the Victorian period.

"The garden still has many of the plants in it that where here when Whittier was here," WHA President Chris Bryant said, "the grape arbor and many of the herbs. We try to keep up the plantings of heirloom quality."

Born in Haverhill on Dec. 17, 1807, John Greenleaf Whittier spent his early years living on a working farm with his parents, two sisters, a brother, a maternal aunt and paternal uncle. Whittier and his family mother Abigail, sister Elizabeth and Aunt Mercy moved to Amesbury in 1836, into a three-room cottage across the street from the Quaker Meeting House.

From 1836 until his death in 1892, Whittier lived and wrote most of his poetry and prose here in his Amesbury home. Built circa 1829, this classic New England farmhouse retains the decor and structure of the home as Whittier and his family knew it during the mid- and late 1800s.

"Enjoy tea or lemonade served at your table and a buffet of tea sandwiches and luscious sweet treats lovingly made by Whittier Home Association volunteers," Bryant said, "but what really makes it a Victorian tea is that everyone is encourage to dress up in flowery dresses and big floppy hats. Gentlemen may wear boaters, and young ladies and young gentlemen are welcome.

"The tea is served in bone china teacups, which were contributed by many, many people over the years. Its a delightful hodgepodge of teacups, saucers and teapots, all set on linen tablecloths with cloth napkins, china plates and silver teaspoons. Its an indulgent afternoon of relaxation, good food, and good friends."

While diners may feel as if they are at a Victorian summer tea, attention is paid to 21st century tastes with gluten-free and vegetarian options. Not only is the quantity of the food unlimited, but there will even be baggies available to take home leftovers.

"We will have raffle prizes donated by members, including baskets of items designed to pamper, and books by Whittier and local authors," Bryant said. "All this would not be possible without the extreme talent and gracious hospitality of (WHA member) Rosey Werner and the many Whittier Home volunteers."

Following the tea, guests will be able to take mini-tours of the home, which serves as a National Historic Landmark and tribute to the Quaker poet and the anti-slavery champion, who made outstanding contributions to the life and literature of this country.

Known as The Quaker Poet, The Slave Poet and The Fireside Poet, Whittier wrote from the time he was a child until the close of his life in 1892.

His first published work occurred in his youth when his sister, Mary Whittier, sent his poem "The Exiles Departure" to William Garrison, publisher of The Free Press. Garrison thereafter published a Whittier poem every week in this newspaper. The cause of Negro emancipation stirred and deepened Whittiers whole nature. His poetry was prolific during this time. Slave poems and many of Whittiers political poems remain to this day powerful, intense and very stirring.

By the end of the Civil War all the women of his family had died, leaving Whittier lonely and alone in his Amesbury house. It is from his personal grief, coupled with the nations grief that he wrote his masterpiece, "Snowbound." An exhausted war-weary nation embraced the poem and Whittier, once the Abolitionist outcast, became a hero.

"Snowbound," a poem about memory of family and of a heartfelt time that had gone by, was written with such clarity that you feel and know that you too were sitting around that fire, warm and safe, while the winter storm raged outside. It was the first time in his life Whittier received national recognition for his work as a poet accompanied by a substantial amount of money.

Since its founding in 1898, the Whittier Home Association has served assteward for the preservation of collections, structures, and grounds of the John GreenleafWhittier Museum in Amesbury.

As a non-profit, educational organization, WHA strives to engage diverse audiences in the life story of Whittier in his roles as a Quaker, a writer, and an abolitionist by providing access to his home, collections, and archival material, complemented with public programs, exhibits, and publications.

Harper Beckham attends tea party at Buckingham Palace – Iosco County News Herald

Harper Beckham attended a tea party at Buckingham Palace last week.

The six-year-old daughter of David and Victoria Beckham wore a gown inspired by Queen Elsa from the movie 'Frozen' for the bash at the royal residence, where she spent time with the likes of Princess Eugenie and a host of her school friends.

Harper celebrates her birthday today (10.07.17) and to mark the occasion, David has posted a glowing tribute to his daughter on Instagram.

Alongside a snap of the pair at the Palace, the retired soccer star wrote: "Happy Birthday to our special little young lady ...Such a special girl who brings so much joy and happiness into our lives.. Happy 6th birthday ( I can't believe your 6 already ) have the most amazing day we love you pretty lady x (sic)"

In a subsequent post, David shared a picture of Harper and her friends with Princess Eugenie - the younger daughter of Prince Andrew and Sarah, Duchess of York - at the Palace, where a number of schools were recently invited to visit.

He captioned the image: "Lucky Harper meeting a real life princess at the Palace x (sic)"

Meanwhile, Victoria also posted a snap of Harper holding a red balloon while stood outside the world-famous landmark.

The fashion designer wrote: "Our little birthday princess x Kisses (sic)"

This comes shortly after David revealed that his three sons - Brooklyn, 18, Romeo, 14, and Cruz, 12 - have already developed a protective attitude towards their little sister.

David admitted he's dreading the day Harper starts dating, but he knows the boys will be on hand to help him out.

He said: "Luckily, she's got three older brothers as well. So once she starts dating, that person will have to go through an inspection with her brothers [and] her dad. It'll be tough."

The Tea Party of the Left Resisting Trump – OZY

See Leah Greenberg and Ezra Levin from Indivisble in person at OZY Fest, OZYs festival of ideas, music, food, comedy, art and film, taking place on July 22 in NYCs Central Park. Find out more.

On the morning of Nov. 9, 2016, Ezra Levin and Leah Greenberg woke up dazed and confused like many other progressives they had been convinced they would witness the election of the first female president. Instead, Levin, a former congressional staffer and poverty solutions advocate, and Greenberg, an anti-human-trafficking policy pro, were faced with Donald Trump.

Their form of resistance resulted in a Google Docs manifesto, which they slapped online in December, typos and all. With lessons on how to influence members of Congress (hint: make them fear for their jobs) and mimicking the defensive crouch of the Tea Party (say no like a toddler learning its first words), the Indivisible Guide found an audience to the tune of more than 2 million views and nearly 6,000 affiliate branches, at least two in every U.S. congressional district. Ahead of Levin and Greenbergs appearance at OZY Fest 2017, we talk to them about their unexpected success and whats next for the anti-Trump resistance.

Leah Greenberg: Its the combination of online to offline organizing. Information can travel enormously fast, but a lot of times the actual, most effective things are getting people together in a room. Theres a lot of research on mobilization in the internet age mass protests are much faster to organize, but in doing so, you short-circuit the relationships and planning and trust building that are often necessary to sustain movements.

Ezra Levin: One, there are [Indivisible] groups leading and developing themselves. And below that success, we are seeing both legislative and electoral victories that are quite substantial. There are an average of 13 groups in every single congressional district in the country. That means not just East Coast or West, not just city centers there is Indivisible East Tennessee and Auburn, Alabama. They are nurses, schoolteachers, IT technicians. And what they did was create Indivisible Roanoke, or Indivisible Phoenix. A lot of these groups started with 20 people in someones living room, and now they find themselves with 800 people at a community center.

On the legislative side, its easy to lose sight of the fact that, back in November and December, the word on the street was that conservatives had unified control of federal government, and they were going to push through enormous reforms as quickly as possible. We are now about six months into this Congress, and they have yet to pass a single significant piece of legislation, which is absolutely shocking. That is a direct result of the pressure being applied to the system by constituents across the country.

Levin: These were all incredibly safe Republican seats. The closest race was Georgia 6th. It was Newt Gingrichs former seat. And what weve seen in these elections is a massive swing away from Trump and the Republicans. That was an 8-point Republican seat that turned into a 2-point race. (Editors note: The New York Times final tally had Handel up 3.7 points). To put that into context, what does a 6-point swing do? If that were to happen next year nationally in congressional races, we wouldnt just take the House of Representatives more than 50 Republicans would lose their seats, including Paul Ryan. It would be an enormous wave.

Greenberg: Our main theory is that when youre focusing on what is happening in Congress, you have the most leverage when youre doing federal advocacy. To some extent, that involves being reactive to what is happening.

Greenberg: Two key strategic insights: They understood their power was constituent power. And through advocating, being rooted in their community, demanding to be represented as constituents to members of Congress and senators, they took advantage of that to put forward a powerful message. Second, they were willing to be purely defensive on the federal level. Sometimes they didnt focus on a specific policy preference. Instead, they focused on really intensive opposition to whats been happening with Washington.

Levin: What they were saying no to was a historically popular president with a mandate to expand health care. When we say no today, the word is the same, but the purpose, we argue, is not obstruction; its the protection of the most vulnerable members of society, who would be harmed by policies that have astonishingly low public support.

Trump faced this choice back in January when he was taking office he could have recognized he was elected with fewer votes and he could have pursued a policy agenda that was bipartisan or moderate. Instead, what the Republicans and Trump have done is pursue a real extremist agenda. Being against Trumpcare is not only a negative stand but also an affirmative endorsement of the ideal that health care is a human right and not a commodity.
