‘Tea For Tea:’ UConn’s first-ever gathering of queer and transgender people of color – UConn Daily Campus

On Wednesday, April 10, Queer Asians and Allies, the Black Queer Students Association and the DeColores Collective, a Hispanic and Latine queer and transgender affinity organization, hosted a tea party at the University of Connecticuts Asian American Cultural Center lounge in the Student Union. The name of the event is a play on words, as T4T is a reference to love between two transgender people.

Light refreshments, snacks and tea were provided. A kettle for heating water was also provided. Grian Wizner, president of DeColores, provided some mugs for those who didnt bring their own.

When asked what it means to be a queer person of color, Justin Burchell, who attended the event at Wizners request and wasnt affiliated with any of the organizations, said Intersectionality is an aspect of that. On the topic of his workplace, he said Trinity Health is a pretty religious organization and Im hyperaware of how Im portrayed by others. There is that cultural oppression with Christianity, but the ideas are still there. When talking about self-confidence and expressing yourself, Burchell said I find myself suppressing parts of myself I dont suppress at school or at home, like at Walmart I forget the oppression until I have to face it again like at work because I notice how I change how I talk and become more reserved.

The event officially started when the three organizations introduced their goals with a slideshow of their e-boards and their organizations mission statements.

Members of the audience then introduced themselves with their names, pronouns, the mug that they chose or brought and what organization they most identified with. The audience applauded each and every time someone introduced themselves.

Rilee Roldan, president of Queer Asians and Allies, said to the audience Its almost the end of the semester. How are we feeling? encouraging the audience to share tea, or personally-involved information. Erick Cheng, an e-board member of Queer Asians and Allies, said Confidentiality is very important.

To bolster socialization and camaraderie between the audience members, there were four discussion questions to avoid the basic lecture format of information alongside a slideshow. The four questions were: What is your favorite music artist or song right now?, How would you describe your sense of style?, If you only could drink one thing forever (cannot be water), what would it be? and Do you have any pets? If not, what is your dream pet? When thinking of answers for the choice of drink to replace water, the following question came up: Do we have to deal with the health consequences? The room agreed that there wouldnt be any health complications to the question because it was hypothetical. As a result, responses to the question varied from I would drink fat-free milk to Im lactose intolerant. Fuck it, milkshakes.

The audience clapped when Beyonc was mentioned when discussing the question about current music taste. Wizner said My favorite song right now is Like A Stone by Audioslave. It reminds me of my dad. Burchell said This is a hot take, but we cant be friends by Ariana Grande. Artists can be problematic, but I can still enjoy the music. The conversation at the table then turned to classical music. Allison De Angelis, treasurer of Queer Asians and Allies, said My friend used to listen to a lot of Mozart before going on a passionate tangent about how much she loved part one of Antonio Vivaldis Spring from The Four Seasons.

When asked when DeColores meets, Wizner said to check De-Colores Instagram @decloresuconn. Justin Christie, president of the Black Queer Students Association, said that BQSA meets Tuesdays from 6 to 7 p.m. at the African American Cultural Center. Cheng said that Queer Asians and Allies meet every other Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Asian American Cultural Center program room.

Guests attend 7th annual Easter Bunny Tea Party in Columbiana – Shelby County Reporter – Shelby County Reporter

By DONALD MOTTERN | Staff Writer

COLUMBIANA On Saturday, March 16, roughly 100 guests turned out in their Saturday best at the Shelby County Arts Councils Grande Hall for the seventh annual Easter Bunny Tea Party organized by the Columbiana Beautification Board.

The family-friendly event was tailored to younger audiences and allowed families to dress up for the approaching holiday. All attendees were able to sit for a formal style tea party that offered cupcakes, cookies and other snacks in the way of refreshments.

This is one of the main fundraisers for the Columbiana Beautification Board, and it is certainly one of our favorites, said Lisa Davis, chairperson for the Columbiana Beautification Board. We have the bunnies, the food, fun dancing and the music, so of course it is one of our favorite things we do.

Returning for its seventh year, the Easter Bunny Tea Party serves as one of the two major fundraisers for the board each year. Tickets to this years event were $15 per person and included a meet and greet with the bunnies for the children and the opportunity to mingle with the board for the parents.

We take the proceeds from this fundraiser and we give back to Columbiana in the ways of planting flowers, purchasing and installing benches and picnic tables, Davis said. The event helps support any kind of community project that we do that we might not have a budget for.

Davis and other members of the beautification board arrived at the Grande Hall as early as 5 a.m. the day of the event to finalize preparations and to begin the staging for the event. Burley Girl Bakery also aided in supplying the event by donating bunny shaped cookies for the occasion.

We have nine local ladies that are on our beautification board, and we are all volunteers, Davis said. We are an active and working board and we work hard to make these events as fun and successful as possible.

Decorations for the event included table runners featuring embroidered Easter imagery and lettering that matched with individualized table settings and decorations that made each place setting unique.

Following the formal tea party, where guests mingled and enjoyed their refreshments, younger guests and their parents were able to take to the dance floor. Throughout the event, songs were played from a number of Disney movies, most notably Encanto, Aladdin and Frozen.

The musical arrangement also included traditional Easter themed party songs that invited children to bounce like a bunny, and even featured popular pop music and a dash of Elvis Presley when Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny took to the dance floor to the tune of Cant Help Falling in Love.

We thought it would be nice to let Mr. and Mrs. Easter Bunny have a special moment between the two of them, Davis said. We had so much fun at the bunny tea. (It is) hard work, but (it is) such a reward seeing all those smiling, dancing, adorable kiddos.

This event also marked the third time that the event was held in the Grande Hall at the Shelby County Arts Council, which allowed the crowd ample area to move around and enjoy the festivities. The use of the venue marks a level of cooperation between the beautification board, the SCAC and the community.

We thank you all, Davis said. These fundraisers allow us to do so many things for downtown and throughout the city of Columbiana that we might not otherwise have the budget to do. When you see us downtown working, planting flowers and fun things like thatthese guys are the ones who support us doing that.

Dispatches from the city's swankiest affairs: The third annual Newbury Cup tea party, the Mass General for Children Storybook Ball and the United in Style fashion show.

The third annual Newbury Cup tea party took place at the Newbury Boston, where the ballroom overlooking the Public Garden was packed to capacity with a high-powered, flawlessly dressed, mostly female crowd. Conceived by Simone Winston, Lisa Pierpont, and Shannon Pastuszak, the group chooses a charitable theme (fighting homelessness, increasing access to mental health care, etc.) and researches emerging local nonprofits that address that particular need.

After voting on a winner, they volunteer there for a year, and it all culminates in a delightful afternoon of extended pinkies and bonhomie, where as much champagne is imbibed as Earl Grey, and plenty of tea is spilled. The winning charity also receives a loving cup from Tiffanys and a hefty donation. This years recipient was Ethos, a nonprofit that provides services to the elderly ranging from home care to meal delivery, hosts an annual senior prom, and operates a weekly luncheon catering to older members of the LGBTQ+ community.

On hand for the afternoon were the likes of Back Bay boss lady Maura Connolly, aptly named hotelier Carlos Bueno, force of nature Jane Deery, the effervescent Kat VanDernoot, soign superwoman Penny Fireman, Tiffanys charmer Cedric Tonello, recycling titan Karen Osborn, fashion icon Adriana Hassan, Ethos chief development officer Raymond Santos, and so on and so forth.

Tables were decorated with teapots and cups depicting the mallards from Make Way for Ducklings, as well as gorgeous flower arrangements and towers of tea sandwiches and treats. Overheard while everyone was searching for their place cards: Ive already seen everyone in this room twice this week, and Ill see them all again on Saturday. Sometimes, it feels like there are only 200 people in Boston.

Perhaps true, but Boston now has a new tea party to be proud of.

An indisputable highlight of the citys social calendar is the Storybook Ball to benefit Mass General for Children. This year, the black-tie evening, held at the Omni Boston Hotel at the Seaport and cochaired by Rachel and Bill Motley and Laura Will and David Nicholson, featured its signature carnival booths, cocktails, dinner, and dancing (not necessarily in that order). The live auction, meanwhile, included a Kentucky Derby package, a dinner catered by top chef Douglass Williams and sommelier extraordinaire TJ Douglas, and the opportunity to watch your kid scramble after rebounds during warmup at a Celtics game.

The United in Style fashion show was held at The Shops at Chestnut Hill to benefit Dress for Success and Project Smile, two nonprofits providing men and women in need with wardrobes to help them reenter the workforce. WCVBs Chronicle anchor Shayna Seymour and Ramiro Torres of HOT 96.9 served as emcees, and the cocktail party before the runway presentation loosened everyones purse strings enough to raise nearly $20,000.
