Affordable Care Act defies free enterprise
Socialism or progressivism is being advocated as a cure to all our problems. America is presently the most innovative and creative country in existence. Its citizens enjoy more freedom and opportunity than any other country precisely because of our Constitution and free-enterprise system.
The communistic slogan, From each according to his ability, to each according to his need is a slogan popularized by Karl Marx. It sounds great, but it has never succeeded and never will. The Soviets relied on big governments power to restrict freedom and have citizens accept their policies by the only way possible, coercion. Control dominated every aspect of life, excluding the party leaders. Fear of punishment kept the proletariat in line.
Comparisons could also be made between East and West Germany, and North and South Korea. Presently Cuba is a Third World nation. China is straddling the fence by being socially communistic but economically capitalistic. None of the former Eastern European countries that was forced into the Soviet Union retained communism after its collapse.
Our statist administration is futilely attempting to eliminate poverty by redistributing wealth, from the rich to the poor. Our government is adding restrictions that diminish our freedom. The Affordable Care Act is doing exactly that. If we citizens refuse, we are fined by the Internal Revenue Service. Are we all becoming brainwashed?

The real problem is Gaian socialism
In regard to Rees Shearers April 1 guest column, environmentalism has become a religion and does not pay enough attention to facts.
James Lovelock, in his Gaia hypothesis, stated that the entire mass of living matter on Earth (or any planet with life) functions as a sort of vast organism that self-regulates its environment. Thus the planet maintains homeostasis.
Silly religious undertones aside, theres many simple examples of homeostatic mechanisms everywhere. When atmospheric carbon dioxide levels rise, plants are able to grow better and thus remove more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. In fact, greenhouses introduce extra carbon dioxide to speed plant growth.
Calling carbon dioxide carbon pollution makes as much scientific sense as calling oxygen a carcinogen.
Dr. Lovelock has pulled back from his 2006 book Revenge of Gaia and states, I was a little too certain in that book. You just cant tell whats going to happen. (The Guardian 3/30/2014.)
The effect of additional CO2 is at best background noise. Yes we should do away with burning coal, etc. for a number of reasons but not to impose totalitarian political agendas or religion. Nuclear and gas are obvious candidates there are no real technical problems with nuclear and new designs can even recycle and burn spent fuel rods for several centuries. This would be a big plus for the environment, but environmentalists are not having any part of it. They have other agendas.
Bristol broke a record for cold on April 15, 2014. The temperature plunged to 24 degrees Fahrenheit, killing my tomato plants. The real enemy is not carbon dioxide its Gaian socialism.
