Chinese leader calls for art to serve socialism

The purpose of art is to serve socialism and the people, President Xi Jinping said this week, a stark reminder of Chinas undimmed Communist credentials, and must not bear the stench of money nor be slaves to the market.

Socialist culture and art is, in essence, the culture and art of the people, he told a news conference, adding that serving the people and the socialist cause were what the party demanded.

Art and culture were indispensable to the Chinese dream of national rejuvenation, the president, whose wife Peng Liyuan is an opera singer, told an audience of authors, actors, scriptwriters and dancers in Beijing.

Mr Xis remarks chime with a Marxist ideological position; they echo those of Chinas founding father Mao Zedong, who said in 1942: There is, in fact, no such thing as art for arts sake, art that stands above classes, art that is detached from, or independent of, politics.

Chinas dramatic economic rise over recent years has been built on socialism with Chinese characteristics, but the country is officially a Marxist-Leninist state run by the Communist Party.

Follow-up commentary on the state news agency said, despite a huge output, the countrys strength in culture has yet to be fully released.

This weakness goes against Chinas ambition in realising the national revival and sharpening its global image, it said.

Mr Xi said it was vital that artists learn from the masses, that artists should create works that are both artistically outstanding and morally inspiring, to serve the people and socialism and best illustrate socialist core values.

China instructs artists to promote socialism

China's President Xi Jinping has told artists not to chase popularity with "vulgar" works but promote socialism instead, with state media comparing his remarks to a speech by Mao Zedong.

Beijing imposes tight controls over art and culture, which critics say hampers China's efforts to upgrade its economy from lower-end manufacturing towards more profitable creative sectors.

In a high-minded broadside against market forces, Xi told a group of artists on Wednesday (local time) that they should not become "slaves to the market", the official Xinhua news agency reported.

"Pure sensual entertainment does not equate to spiritual elation," Xinhua cited Xi as saying, adding: "Popularity should not necessitate vulgarity."

Xi described common citizens as "the connoisseurs and critics" of art, added the agency, which paraphrased him as saying: "Serving the people and the socialist cause is a requirement of the Communist Party of China, and it is essential to the future development of the country's cultural and artistic sectors."

China relaxed some cultural controls from the 1970s, when popular art consisted of little more than propaganda, in accordance with the doctrines of the country's first Communist leader Mao Zedong.

The state-run China Daily on Thursday likened Xi's remarks to a well-known speech by Mao in the 1940s which outlined his view that the arts should serve politics.

"Art and culture cannot develop without political guidance," the paper said, congratulating Xi for "emphasising the integration of ideology and artistic values".

Beijing is keen to increase exports of cultural products, a process analysts say will be difficult without lightening the heavy weight of state censorship.

The Communist Party continues to censor artists who it perceives as challenging its right to rule, such as Ai Weiwei, and ideological restrictions have tightened under Xi.
