Republican Rob Astorino faces uphill battle against Gov. Cuomo

NEW ROCHELLE How tough a time is Republican Rob Astorino having in his quest to defeat Gov. Cuomo? When the Westchester County Executive went to a Baptist church to seek votes Sunday, he was stood up for a half hour by the pastor, who was busy down the street...endorsing Cuomo.

The pastor was one of a half-dozen black leaders in Astorinos home turf who not only endorsed Cuomo, but slammed the Republican gubernatorial candidate for his ongoing battle with the federal government over housing regulations in the county.

"His refusal to enforce anti-discrimination laws has no place here in New York State," the Rev DeQuincy Hentz of the Shiloh Baptist in New Rochelle said at a meeting of the black religious leaders.

But after endorsing Cuomo, Hentz went up the street to his own church and introduced Astorino to his congregation, saying he welcomed all people running for office to speak and share their views.

Adding to Astorino's woes Sunday, the Rev. Franklyn Richardson, leader of the 5,000-member Grace Baptist Church in Mount Vernon and a backer of Astorino's re-election campaign in the county a year ago, also threw his support behind Cuomo.

Richardson welcomed Cuomo to speak at his church Sunday, saying he supported the governor's re-election, but still supported Astorino in the role of county executive.

Astorino, who has accused the federal government of meddling in what should be locally controlled housing regulations, said he was not upset by the actions of the religious leaders.

"Pastor Hentz and I have a good relationship," he said.

The pro-Cuomo stance of the Westchester religious leaders underscored the troubled state of Astorino's candidacy as the two candidates undertook a final Sunday of church appearances and campaign appearances. Polls show Astorino trailing Cuomo by double-digit margins.

Astorino used his church appearances Sunday to make a religious appeal to voters, saying he is being attacked because of his Christian beliefs and urging church goers to vote their values, not their party because your values and your party don't always match up," he told the largely black audience at the Family Christian Center in New Rochelle.
