Wonkblog: Republican voters change their minds about a path to citizenship

These people protesting illegal immigration now represent the majority of Republicans. (AP/Steven Senne)

New polling shows a major shift in public opinion following Obama's decision to delay deportations for some undocumented immigrants.

A year ago, Quinnipiac University polls show, Republican voters narrowly supported a path to citizenship overdeportation, by 43 percent to 38 percent. Now,support for a path to citizenship has evaporated among Republicans, declining to 27 percent. Fully 54 percent support deportation, while another 15 percent say that undocumented immigrants should be allowed to stay but should not be allowed to become citizens.

Paul Waldman sees these polls as evidence that Republicans take theirposition from talking heads on television. When the right-wing media machine is firing on all cylinders, he writes, its audiences will believe anything.

At the same time, G.O.P.political strategists and conservative economists are probably also concerned about the Quinnipiac polls. The numbers show a party drifting towardan anti-immigration position that could harm the party'schances of winning the presidency.

It's too early to tell whether the shift toward deportations among Republicans is just a fluke that will disappearastempers cool, or something more fundamental, but the answer probably depends on the party's leaders.IfRepublican politicians want to make a case to their constituents for comprehensive immigration reform sometime soon, and if they're able to speak with more or less one voice on the issue, they'll still find a sympatheticaudience.

Rap sheet for Republican aide who rapped Sasha and Malia Obama

The Republican House aide who told President Obamas teenager daughters to dress like you deserve respect and try showing a little class turns out not to have been a teen angel herself.

As first reported in The Smoking Gun, GOP staffer Elizabeth Lauten was arrested as a 17-year-old for larceny at the Belk Department Store in her native North Carolina. The charges were later dropped when, as a first time offender, Lauten did not get into further trouble.

Children, especially first daughters, are off limits, Sean Spicer, communications director, Republican National Committee.

Lauten set off a firestorm with a Facebook post last week, after first daughters Sasha and Malia Obama appeared visibly bored at the annual White House ceremony at which the President pardons a Thanksgiving turkey.

The ceremony rarely ruffles feathers, except years ago when the bird suddenly started flapping in President Reagans face.

Dear Sasha and Malia, I get youre both in those awful teen years, but youre part of the First Family. Try showing a little class, Lauten wrote.

She then became pasty toward the Obama girls parents, writing: Then again, your mother and father dont respect their positions very much, or the nation for that matter, so Im guessing youre coming up a little short in the good role model department.

Nonetheless, stretch yourselves.Rise to the occasion. Act like being in the White House matters to you. Dress like you deserve respect, not a spot at a bar.

The resulting Facebook/Twitter firestorm brought a quick, somewhat abject apology from Lauten, who has held senior House Republican communications posts.
