Republican Ehrlich derides Democrat attacks
CONCORD - Former Maryland Gov. Bob Ehrlich spoke at the Snow Shoe Club Saturday, taking aim at Democrats for what he called their "cultural attack on something we used to celebrate in this country: success."
The Republican warned that the other side has been "making progress" since the past two presidential elections.
"Class warfare is winning. Progressivism is winning. Legislative pre-emption is winning. Lack of federalism is winning. Dependence is winning. Political correctness is winning," he said.
But he also took Republicans to task for their own missteps. "I watched 3 million Republicans not show up for Mitt Romney, and I watched Barack Obama win twice," he said. "Because sometimes we can't get our act together."
Ehrlich talked about his own "blue collar" roots and how the opportunity to attend an elite private prep school "changed my life in every way possible."
He got a football scholarship to Princeton, went on to law school and served in the Maryland state assembly and then the U.S. Congress before becoming governor in 2002.
This was his fifth trip to New Hampshire and he has another half-dozen scheduled, he said. But he hasn't yet decided whether to join the growing Republican field for the first-in-the-nation primary. He knows he's an underdog, he said.
"It's all about trying to figure out whether there's a space for me and my ideas and my sort of blue-collar Republicanism in this party, in this primary, in this cycle in New Hampshire."
Ehrlich answered questions from the audience of about two dozen people about military base closings, free trade and Common Core education standards.
Later, Bob Heghman of Wolfeboro said he was "very impressed" with the former governor. "He's a level-headed guy," he said. "I could see myself working for him and supporting him."
