Ebola: APC, NBA ask Jonathan to stop second term rallies

The All Progressives Congress and the Ikeja branch of the Nigerian Bar Association, on Thursday said the rallies being held for President Goodluck Jonathans second term bid was violating measures put in place to avert the spread of the Ebola Virus Disease.

Also, prominent legal practitioner, Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), in a separate interview with our correspondent, described the continuation of the rallies as misplaced priority.

The All Progressives Congress, in a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in Ilorin on Thursday, called on President Jonathan to direct the campaigners to stop the rallies.

The party said the rallies were capable of jeopardising the nations efforts to address the spread of the Ebola disease.

It stated, Mr. President, you said your ambition is not worth the life of any Nigerian. But the Transformation Ambassadors of Nigeria rallies for your re-election are endangering the lives of thousands of Nigerians in these days of Ebola.

It said the President must in particular ensure that the rally slated for Port Harcourt on Saturday was stopped.

Buhari and the age controversy

The camp of Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd) in the All Progressives Congress on Wednesday dispelled speculations that the former military Head of State has dropped his aspiration to contest the 2015 Presidency on the grounds that he is too old.

Comments:

Nasir: What we are looking for in this country is beyond old age. What we are looking for is who is going to rescue this country from the hand of evil people who have turned Nigeria into an Automated Teller Machine. We want somebody that can re-unite this country despite the situation we are now. We want somebody that can fight corruption to a standstill. Thus, old age shouldnt matter in this circumstance. Whether Buhari is 100 years or above, as far as he believes he can rescue us from our current ugly situation, he should give the Presidency his best shot.

Osakue Aiyevbekpen: In a digital age where the average age of world leaders is 45, why do we need a former military dictator as President? How can such a man understand the intricacies of a world governed by ideas and be able to engage leaders of industries on new economic platforms, the language of which has changed? Are there no brighter and smarter young men in the All Progressives Congress who understand the nuances of the present world? Anyone promoting Buhari for his rigidity and discipline is out of touch with the flexibility imperative of democracy. Buhari is too out of fashion to be President of modern Nigeria!

The Beloved: While I do not hold forth for Buhari, I do not have problem with the age of anyone when it comes to governance provided he has something good to deliver. One of our major problems is stealing of public funds and this is happening in most of our local governments, constituencies, states and at the federal level. People stealing this fund are not really old people. So if Buhari wants to contest election, let it be.

Plain Talk: Mark Sept. 13 on the calendar it's Bob Fest time

Two weeks from tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 13, is a big day for Wisconsin progressives.

That's when the 13th annual Fighting Bob Fest takes place back at where it was founded at the Sauk County Fairgrounds just east of Baraboo and all good progressives need to be there.

Bob Fest has become a huge annual gathering, attracting some of the country's best-known progressive speakers and featuring breakout sessions on everything from poverty to public education plus lots of music and just plain old fun in between.

It's modeled after the old-fashioned political chautauquas that were popular throughout the country back in the early 20th century when Wisconsin's Robert M. "Fighting Bob" La Follette was campaigning for office. Sponsored by The Capital Times and the Progressive Magazine, which was founded by La Follette, the annual festival is aimed at keeping the Wisconsin progressive spirit alive.

Local favorite Bernie Sanders, the independent Vermont senator who has been at the forefront of reforming the VA hospital system and calling for a constitutional amendment to overturn the Supreme Court's "Citizen's United" decision, will again be the keynote speaker at this year's fest.

Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mary Burke is scheduled to address the gathering in the late morning. Other speakers include Rep. Mark Pocan, Kevin Alexander Gray, Lisa Graves, Chris Hedges, Will Durst, Ruth Conniff, Anne Feeney, Mike McCabe and Bad River Indian Chief Mike Wiggins.

Professor Nancy Unger, the author of "Fighting Bob La Follette: The Righteous Reformer," will once again lead a breakout session on La Follette family history, this year focusing on Fighting Bob's wife, Belle La Follette.

Nino Amato will lead a breakout on poverty and racial disparities; Michael Copps, Professor Bob McChesney and John Nichols will talk about media reform; the Center for Media and Democracy's Lisa Graves will lead a discussion about ALEC and the Koch brothers; Roger Bybee will lead a panel on getting your message across; and Progressive Editor Ruth Conniff, along with One Wisconsin Now's Scot Ross and Madison teachers' union John Matthews, will talk about defending public education.

As always, Bob Fest and the parking at the fairgrounds are free, but donations are accepted to help defray the cost of speakers' travel, rental fees and other costs. It all begins at 9 and ends around 5.

As in other years, a Friday evening, Sept. 12, bash in Madison will take place at the Barrymore Theater on Atwood Avenue, starting at 6:30. Sanders will make an appearance, as will Madison Mayor Paul Soglin, and state Reps. Mandela Barnes, Dianne Hesselbein, Melissa Sargent and Chris Taylor. The evening will conclude with Progressive columnist Will Durst's comedy act. The fee for that event is $10 at the door.
