Washington President Obama appeared on ABCs Jimmy Kimmel Live Thursday night and mixed comedy bits with a serious riff about the shooting of two police officers in Ferguson, Mo.
Was that a weird juxtaposition? We must admit it seemed a little awkward to us.
First, the funny stuff. Mr. Obama was the first sitting president to make an in-studio guest appearance on a late night talk show, according to Variety, and his experience is starting to show. Hes polished the slightly hesitant, stiff delivery into an actual comic persona. It seems arch and a little self-knowing, as if hes giving an imitation of himself delivering jokes in front of a law seminar.
Or something like that.
This may have come across best during Mr. Kimmels signature mean tweets bit. Obama read supposedly critical tweets about himself on air a method meant to defuse the sting and show presidents are people too, according to the host.
We say supposedly mean because they were pretty mild as insults go. By the standards of Twitter they were practically compliments. Most of the ones we get include Nazi and moron in some combination.
For instance, Obama read this one, from @RWSurfer girl: Is there anyway we could fly Obama to a golf course halfway around the world and leave him there?
Sounds good to me, the president said in response.
Then he read How do you make Obamas eyes light up? Shine a flashlight in his ears.
This one caused Obama himself to kind of laugh out loud. Thats pretty good, he said.

Almost a year after ordering a massive shake-up of the Veterans Affairs Department, President Obama gave one troubled outpost a once-over Friday to see whether his massive staff housecleaning led to improvements.
In a trip to the VA hospital in Phoenix, where a whistle-blowerexposed the existence of waits so long that dozens of veterans may have died awaiting treatment, Obama declared that his new VA leadership was chipping away at those problems.
Weve brought in a new team that has been tackling these issues to make sure that wait times for scheduling, access to providers, is greatly improved, the president told reporters. But what we know is there is still more work to do.
Trust, he said, is one of those things that you lose real quick, and then it takes some time to build.
Aides to the president say the Phoenix center has shown progress since the revelations last April, as has the rest of the agencys division charged with providing healthcare to American veterans.
Promising accountability, new VA Secretary Bob McDonald fired or disciplined hundreds of employees and hired a net increase of more than 8,000 doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers, according to administration figures.
But change hasnt come quickly or thoroughly enough for some veterans advocates who hope Obama will see the job as only half done during his review.
The conservative Concerned Veterans for America warned the president publicly against the perils of a whitewashed tour by hospital administrators who were part of the problem. A whistle-blowerwho helped bring attention to the problems said she had seen signs of improvement but also expressed hope that Obama would get an unvarnished view, not just a meeting with senior executives.
The person that he should be meeting with is the person that works the night shift on the psychiatric floor or who works the busiest shifts in the ER or the housekeeper that is struggling to clean all these really important places, said Katherine Mitchell, a physician who testified before Congress last summer that she suffered retaliation routinely for reporting health and safety concerns at the troubled facility.
If they want to find out whats going on in the hospital, they need to speak with the people on the front lines, Mitchell said in an interview before Obamas tour.
