Obama Vows Action on Immigration by End of Year
President Barack Obama told Hispanic leaders he hasnt given up on changing the nations immigration laws before the end of the year and said their votes in November will build political power.
Addressing the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute in Washington tonight, Obama said he understood frustration among Hispanics, who overwhelmingly backed him for election, that more progress hasnt been made on immigration.
Fixing our broken immigration system is one more big thing that we have to do and that we will do, he said at the Washington Convention Center. Tonight I ask you to keep believing.
Swerving Path to Citizenship
Obama is seeking to limit potential political backlash from Hispanic voters after delaying taking administrative action on immigration until after next months elections as Democrats struggle to hold their majority in the Senate.
The president had made a promise and he should have delivered on that promise, said Brent Wilkes, national executive director of the League of United Latin American Citizens. So were disappointed. I think a lot of people in the community are angry.
Obama in September backed off his pledge to change U.S. immigration policies, which had been a stated priority for the previous several months as a surge of unaccompanied minors entered the U.S. over the Mexican border. He cited extreme politicization after being unable to secure congressional support for his planned changes.
Republican candidates in some closely contested states, including Arkansas, where Democratic Senator Mark Pryor is running for re-election, accused Obama and Democrats of supporting amnesty for undocumented immigrants.
Seven of the 21 Senate seats being defended by Democrats are in states that Obama lost in the last presidential election. Republicans need a net gain of six seats to gain control of the Senate.
Cristina Jimenez, managing director of United We Dream, a Washington-based group that advocates for immigrant youth, said in a statement that Obamas decision is politically motivated and said it showed protecting politicians is more important than protecting my mother and father, and millions more, who are under the imminent threat of deportation.
