College Commencement Speeches: Liberals Hate Diversity

Liberals are always preaching the values of diversity and inclusion. Regrettably, such platitudes are just rhetoric, because upon closer examination liberals hate diversity.

As evidence, just examine some recent and disturbing activities on the campus of Rutgers University. After former Secretary of State and National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice was invited to give the commencement address, liberals went crazy. In February, the faculty council passed a resolution demanding that the university withdraw their invitation to Rice. Thereafter, student protesters stormed the office of the Rutgers President to express their disapproval of the selection and condemn Rice as a war criminal.

What is ironic in this whole series of events is that Rice no conservative, but a very moderate Republican, who just happened to serve in the George W. Bush administration. Her academic and professional credentials are extraordinary and Rutgers students should have been extremely grateful to have someone of her caliber address them.

Unfortunately, only negative protests were heard from students and faculty, so Dr. Rice eventually decided to decline the invitation. In her letter to the university, Rice noted, "I have defended America's belief in free speech and the exchange of ideas. These values are essential to the health of our democracy."

Sadly, it seems that universities are no longer committed to free speech or open debate as only liberalism is allowed. This trend has been occurring across the nation for years. Whereas, universities are supposed to be laboratories for free discussion, embracing all ideological viewpoints; upon closer examination, liberalism is not only dominant, it is unchallenged.

On a regular basis, conservative speakers are either completely shunned or, if they are invited, verbally and even physically attacked on campus. Conservative commentator Ann Coulter, among many others, has been targeted. Today, even moderates like Dr. Rice are unwelcome.

Among the top universities in the nation, the commencement speaker list for 2014 is a Who's Who of liberalism. Delivering graduation addresses this year will be former New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg at Harvard University, Secretary of State John Kerry at Yale University, former Vice President Al Gore at Princeton University, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi at the University of California- Berkeley, MSNBC host Chris Matthews at Ohio State University, President Barack Obama at the University of California-Irvine and First Lady Michelle Obama at Dillard University in New Orleans.

Barrie Liberals hope to pick candidate soon

Local Liberals hope to have a Barrie candidate in place by Monday for the June 12 provincial election.

Stephen Bertelsen, president of the Ontario Liberal Party's Barrie Provincial Riding Association, said there was a conference call Sunday morning with Toronto party officials.

We are now in the midst of having three individuals interviewed, of high profile, so that announcement will come shortly, he said Sunday morning. I'm hoping by tomorrow (Monday) you'll have your candidate.

It is pressing, as Barrie is win-able, so we want to find the right person.

Rod Jackson of the Progressive Conservatives is the incumbent Barrie MPP, having won the riding in 2011. Liberal Aileen Carroll was the previous MPP, although she did not run for re-election almost three years ago. Before Carroll, PC Joe Tascona held the Barrie riding for about 12 years.

Bertlesen later said there were more than three potential Liberal candidates for Barrie.

There are a number of people right now being approached, he said. We have gone through an interview process with several, and so right now we have tasks that we need to complete.

On May 1, Ontario's Liberal minority government unveiled its provincial budget. New Democratic Pary leader Andrea Horwath announced the next morning, May 2, that she would vote against the budget. PC boss Tim Hudak said before the budget that his MPPs would not support it.

The same day, May 2, Premier Kathleen Wynne visited Lt.-Gov. David Onley and asked him to dissolve the Ontario legislature, and the request was granted for a June 12 election.

Given this happened more than a week ago, Bertelsen was asked Sunday why the Barrie Liberals still don't have a candidate.

Liberals take aim at both NDP, Tories

Ontario election sparks spirited debate-Image1 The Canadian Press, 2014

TORONTO - The political punches are flying mostly left, but also to the right, in this weekend's campaigning for Ontario's June 12 election.

The verbal brawling started Saturday morning with the Liberals unleashing an attack ad targeting NDP Leader Andrea Horwath for opposing their left-wing friendly budget.

Horwath countered, saying she couldn't support a budget that promised 70 new plans after the government failed to follow through on three key promises it made last year.

She cited Liberal plans for an auto insurance rate cut, financial accountability oversight and home care improvement.

Horwath and the Liberals, meantime, both took aim yesterday at Tory leader Tim Hudak's plan to create 120,000 jobs by cutting corporate taxes.

Hudak said he'd pay for his plan by scrapping grants to businesses, which he calls "corporate welfare."

Horwath, however, dismissed that as a failed idea, while the Liberals referred to the prospect of a Hudak-led government as scary.

Premier Kathleen Wynne had no public events yesterday but will be in Mississauga today to join the Breast Cancer Society of Canada's annual Mother's Day Walk.
