Liberals side with Greens to support fracking inquiry in South Australia

An inquiry into unconventional gas exploration in South Australia could be underway as early as next week following Liberal Party support for a Greens motion in State Parliament's Upper House.

The Opposition amended the motion by Greens MP Mark Parnell to ensure the Parliament's Natural Resources Committee (NRC) focused primarily on the south east, an agriculturally rich region heavily earmarked by the State Government for shale gas extraction.

The Liberals last month voted against the Greens inquiry because its focus was state-wide rather than on the south east.

Liberal Member for Mount Gambier Troy Bell had since tabled a south-east focused motion for debate in the Lower House where it was destined for defeat by the Government and independents.

He said supporting the Greens motion in the Upper House was the best possible outcome.

"I went to an election promising an inquiry," Mr Bell said.

"Now I've been able to deliver, which is a little bit more difficult when you're in opposition because you've got to work with a range of different stakeholders."

He said the NRC was the best option because the members had "real life, hands-on experience".

"Plus they have already started taking some evidence as part of their committee anyway, so they are further progressed than any other committee would be, which would have to start from scratch," Mr Bell said.

Mr Parnell said he was disappointed that the terms of reference for the inquiry had to be so narrow.

Tories win Ontario, Alberta byelections but Liberals show most momentum

Prime Minister Stephen Harpers Conservatives have narrowly retained the late Jim Flahertys suburban Toronto seat and easily hung on to another riding in their Alberta stronghold.

But it was Justin Trudeaus Liberals who once again showed all the momentum in two byelections Monday.

The Liberals were the only party to increase their share of the vote in both ridings and the gains were considerable.

Their vote share almost tripled in Whitby-Oshawa, where political neophyte Celina Caesar-Chavannes came within eight points of knocking off the Tories Pat Perkins, a high-profile, former two-term Whitby mayor whod been endorsed by Flahertys family and a parade of senior cabinet ministers.

Liberal support in Albertas Yellowhead riding, meanwhile, increased almost seven-fold over the paltry three per cent captured in 2011, when the party ran fourth behind the NDP and Greens.

Liberals have posted gains some of them dramatic in every byelection since Trudeau took the helm 19 months ago. Mondays results helped further cement the perception that the Liberal party is the only one with the wind at its back as federal politicos prepare for a general election in less than year.

You proved that positive change for Canada is coming soon, Trudeau crowed at Caesar-Chavannes headquarters in Whitby.

And that it cant come from a tired old government. Only the Liberal party can bring it.

While they emerged victorious in both ridings, the ruling Conservatives share of the vote was markedly reduced from 2011 down nine points in Whitby, 15 points in Yellowhead.
