Appleby To Support “An Evening with Tony Benn”

by John Wannenburgh

Tony Benn the longest serving Labour MP in the history of the party - will visit the Isle of Man on 21st November as guest speaker at an Isle of Man Sporting and Dining Club Evening With event at the Gaiety Theatre.

With a flask of tea, some tobacco and his trademark pipe as his only props Tony Benn brings his unmistakable presence to his successful stage show at the Gaiety Theatre for one night only. A mix of politics, opinion and debate on various issues, followed by questions from the audience. Participation encouraged! Sponsored by Appleby, the event begins with an interview on serious and topical themes including the recession, war and nature. Tony Benn draws on his decades of experience, his political past and his startlingly alert 86 year-old brain, throughout what is certain to be an entertaining evening. A compelling speaker by anyone's standards, he is against university fees, nuclear power and the crown powers invested in the Prime Minister. He is opposed to war, and Africa not western muscle flexing holds the solution to Zimbabwe's troubles. He is despairing of NATO and concerned about the rise of the far right.

Quick witted and full of insight, Tony Benn remains informed and opinioned - on an amazing variety of subjects. Describing his role as the nation's classroom assistant, he yearns to encourage and is an undeniable treasure of our political and national life. Tony Benn was born in London and retired from the House of Commons in May 2001, after serving fifty years in Parliament. He was a Cabinet minister in the Wilson and Callaghan governments from 1964 - 79, Minister of Technology, Secretary of State for both Industry and Energy and President of the Council of European Energy ministers in 1977. An elected member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour party from 1959 - 1994, he was Chairman of the Party in 1971/2.

His published Diaries, in seven volumes, cover the period from 1942-1990, and the next volume 'Free at Last' from 1990 2001. Tony is the holder of seven honorary Doctorates from British and American universities, and he has recently been appointed as a Visiting Professor at the London School of Economics and is a regular broadcaster.

In 1949 he married Caroline Benn, educationalist and author of the biography of Keir Hardie who died in 2000 and they have four children and ten grandchildren.

Organised by John Wannenburgh of the Sporting and Dining Club, the event is a follow up to An Evening with Michael Portillo which was sold out in November 2011.

Tickets are available from 1st March at an early bird special rate of 12.50 by contacting 01624 600555 or http://www.villagaiety.com. After this time ticket are priced at 15.00 with concession rates available. John said: I would like to take this opportunity to thank Appleby for its support of our Tony Benn event in November. Whether you agree with Tony Benn or not, it is from his vast experience at the heart of national and international affairs, that he gleans his authority. He is fun and lovable, serious and informed, all at the same time, and that has the makings of a tremendously entertaining evening!

Managing Partner of Appleby in the Isle of Man, Sean Dowling said: We are pleased to support the Sporting & Dining Club as it continues to attract high profile speakers to the Isle of Man and I am looking forward to hearing the entertaining stories Tony Benn has to share. His visit comes at a topical time, when public opinion on politics and policies is divided, so I am sure there will be much to debate and discuss!, Sean continued, The Sporting & Dining Club events are a great opportunity for the Islands business and wider community to get together and socialise whilst also raising funds for a range of worthwhile causes. We are only too happy to be involved Issued by: John Wannenburgh, Isle of Man Sporting & Dining Club Tel/Fax 01624 617049

Honda TT Legends sign agreement with Motul

Motul will support the team as it contests the World Endurance Championship, the Isle of Man TT and the Northwest 200 aboard the 20th anniversary Honda CBR1000RR Fireblade.

The team will use the lubricant specialist's Motul 300V Racing Kit Oil, which has been specifically developed for the Fireblade in conjunction with Honda Racing Corporation and uses new Ester technology for maximum power output and engine performance.

Motul already has significant links with the endurance championship through its support of other leading teams and uses the demanding discipline for extensive research and product development. The company also acts as the official lubricant supplier for the Isle of Man TT and, having crowned over 50 world champion titles, is hoping to add a TT victory to its list of triumphs.

The Honda TT Legends rider line-up of John McGuinness, Cameron Donald, Gary Johnson and Simon Andrews will compete in EWC, while McGuinness and Andrews will form a two-man squad for the TT and the NW200.

Neil Tuxworth, Honda TT Legends team manager, said, "We are really pleased to announce the agreement with Motul. The company has valuable expertise in EWC, so this is an ideal collaboration as the team enters its all-important second year of competition. As an official partner at the TT, Motul is also ideally placed to support the team on the Isle of Man. We are looking forward to seeing the results of the relationship."

Herv Amelot, Motul managing director, added, "We are delighted to reinforce our links with motorcycling through our support of Honda Motor Europe's endurance and road racing programme. The Honda TT Legends team has assembled an excellent rider line-up for 2012 and, in light of our role as official lubricant supplier to the Isle of Man TT, what better line-up is there to be involved with than the fastest man around that course and the 2011 fastest newcomer?"

IoM Intends No Tax On Capital Gains

29 February 2012

The Isle of Man has no intention of introducing taxes on capital gains, the island's Treasury Minister, Eddie Teare has confirmed, clarifying the situation following the removal of the island's deemed distribution regime.

Following an investigation by the European Union Code of Conduct Group on Business Taxation, the Isle of Man agreed to remove its Attribution Regime for Individuals from April 2012 to ensure that the territory meets international standards.

Teare said that the abolition of the attribution regime had removed provisions deemed 'harmful', allowing the territory to retain its zero/ten corporate tax regime. Due to the changes, company profits can only be taxed when paid out as dividends received by Isle of Man shareholders rather than on a deemed distribution basis, ie. with tax chargeable regardless of whether a distribution is made, based on the shareholders' cut of the company's profits in a given year.

Teare said that, to combat tax avoidance as a result of the regime's removal, Practice Note 174/12 was released to outline changes to make more strict the tax treatment of an income distribution to prevent individuals from employing tax planning to avoid the payment of income taxes. However the government has clarified that, contrary to erroneous reports, a charge to income tax will not arise to shareholders when capital gains made by a company are distributed.

Teare said: "It has come to my attention that unacceptable tax planning was being contemplated and I had to take steps to ensure that tax due on income, not capital gains, was paid. This is not an attempt to introduce a form of capital gains tax; nothing is further from my mind, the minister confirmed.

The Isle of Man's attribution regime was introduced in 2008 under The Income Tax (Attributed Profits) Temporary Taxation Order 2007 (Statutory Document 928/07), following approval by the island's legislative assembly the Tynwald in December 2007.

The removal of the regime was announced in Budget 2011, and is effective from April 2012.

Victory for Rob In Close Encounter!

by Manx Rally Media

Isle of Man based rally co-driver Rob Fagg got his 2012 season off to the best possible start by taking victory on the opening round of the Eurocars Motorsport Manx Rally Championship, the Mann Construction Chris Kelly Memorial Rally. Competing alongside Bury’s John Cope in the Cope Engineering Subaru Impreza WRC99 they took the spoils by just two seconds in one of the tensest finishes Manx Rallying has seen.

Prior to the event Cope and Robert Graham & Co Quantity Surveyors backed Fagg undertook a two day reconnaissance of the events stages, and on the first day the stages looked to be in excellent condition, but that was to change. Overnight rain turned the roads into a far more challenging test and as crews took the start there was concern regarding some sections which were now mud coated that would be hard to see in the dark Friday night stages.

It was therefore a steady start on stage one, the four mile blast over Slieu Whallian, which saw the pairing setting only the fifth fastest time, 13 seconds to pace setters Steve Colley and Graham Fargher in their Mitsubishi Evo 8. Another fifth fastest time on the 11 mile St Marks stage saw them move up into joint third before making that place their own with second fastest over the new Balladoole test, although they now trailed the lead by 22 seconds.

Service followed and with no major issues on the Geo-Prep prepared and run Subaru, it was just a routine check over and some minor suspension tweaks before a repeat of the previous three stages.
Despite what felt a quicker run over Slieau Whallian the time would just be one second quicker but an improved more committed run through St Marks kept them in the hunt although now 31 seconds off leader Sean Kelly (Evo 9). That gap was to grow by a further 11 seconds as a high-speed overshoot at the final chicane of Balladoole cost John and Rob time as they recovered, ending the night in fourth behind Colley, Kelly and 2010 event winner Dave Pattison in yet another Evo.

The opening stage of day two would see a different John Cope behind the wheel of the Impreza as he blasted through the 11 mile Curraghs test on Saturday morning to immediately reduce the gap to top spot to 28 seconds, that lead now being held by Pattison as Colley dropped to third behind Kelly. A run over Druidale saw the gap drop further before Pattison opened it back up after the fast 10-mile Staarvey test.

The crews would then repeat the loop and the Curraghs bought Cope and Fagg right back into the mix, moving up to second behind Pattison as they went fastest by 15 seconds, the gap now just 10 to top spot, but with Kelly only six back in third. With another second taken back over Druidale, they would take the lead on what turned out to be the penultimate stage of the rally, as Pattison hit trouble and dropped time, now seven second back on John and Rob.

With the final planned Curraghs run being cancelled, just the six mile Druidale test left and the top four separated by a mere 19 seconds with no positions safe it was going to be a dramatic finish and that it was. First to complete the stage was overnight leader Colley, recording a lightning quick 5:19. Kelly would be next, 16 down on Colley while Pattison took second fastest although only two quicker than Kelly. As Cope and Fagg bought the Impreza to the stop line the times were checked, had they done enough?

They had, but by just two seconds as Colley jumped from fourth to second to secure runners-up spot, and beat Pattison by just two seconds with Kelly in fourth a further five back. A margin of just nine seconds from first to fourth, one of the, if not the closest finish in Manx rallying history.

“What a finish, after the time we dropped last night I didn’t think this would be possible but John has driven unbelievably well today” commented Rob at the finish. “The two runs through the Curraghs did it for us and put us in a position to fight for the win and we have got it, only just though with that time from Steve (Colley) on the last stage, he gave it everything. But a wins a win, it’s been a great event and what a finish, let’s hope for more of these.”
