Iran is holding a funeral today for a senior military officer who was killed while assisting Iraqi forces battling Islamic State militants.
Brigadier General Hamid Taghavi was killed in the city of Samarra, north of the Iraqi capital, the Revolutionary Guard Corps said in a statement published yesterday. He was on an advisory mission to help Iraqi forces, it said.
While Iran isnt involved in the U.S.-led coalition seeking to repel the Islamic States advances, Iran has sent military advisers to assist in the fight. The Islamic republic also enjoys influence among Iraqs Shiite militias and within the government of Prime Minister Haidar al-Abadi.
The funeral for Taghavi, who was a military commander during the 1980s Iran-Iraq war, will be held in Tehran today, local media including the Shargh newspaper reported.
Taghavis father and brother were also martyred during the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, the Guards said in the statement. The officers will be buried tomorrow in his hometown, the southern city of Ahvaz.

TEHRAN, Iran The funeral has been held for a senior commander in Iran's Revolutionary Guard who was killed during a battle against the Islamic State extremist group in Iraq.
State TV says the funeral on Monday for Brig. Gen. Hamid Taqavi was held in a Guard compound in Tehran. He will be buried in his hometown Ahvaz in southeastern Iran on Tuesday.
The Guard said Sunday that Taqavi was "martyred while performing his advisory mission" in Samarra, a town north of Baghdad that is home to a major Shiite shrine. He is the highest ranking Iranian officer known to have been killed abroad since the Iran-Iraq war in the 1980s.
Shiite Iran says it has sent military advisers to help government forces in Syria and Iraq, but denies sending combat troops.
