‘Finally’: Trump’s illegal immigration crackdown wins praise from some activists – Los Angeles Times

President Trumps crackdown on illegal immigration has sparked concern from many California politicians. But it is winning praise from activists who for years have been trying to reduce illegal immigration.

Robin Hvidston, executive director of We The People Rising, an anti-illegal immigration organization based in Claremont, said Trumps actions bringnew hope to activists like her.

The organization has turned out to meetings in Rialto andHuntington Park and of the Los AngelesCounty Board of Supervisors to oppose sanctuary measures.

Ending sanctuary cities is a way to restore the rule of law to the cities of California and throughout the United States, she said.We are happy and encouraged that, after decades of federal lawbreaking, a president is finally taking action to enforce federal immigration laws.

Roy H. Beck, who heads NumbersUSA, a powerful national advocacy group opposing illegal immigration, praised Trumps move.

"The new policies announced on sanctuary cities finally put federal executive action on the side of the victims and potential victims of crime instead of protecting the interests of the businesses and organizations who profit from keeping as many illegal migrants in the country as possible."

Two decades ago, California was a hotbed for the anti-illegal immigration movement. In 1994, California voters approved Proposition 187, which was meant to cut many public services for people here illegally. (The law was later ruled unconstitutional.)

But more recent political and demographic shifts have made California decidedly more welcoming to those here without proper papers.

Morethan 400 jurisdictions acrossthe country have some sort of sanctuary policy aimed at welcoming those here illegally, including Los Angeles, San Francisco and about 40 others in California.

California police see dangers in Trump's illegal immigration crackdown

Details about Trumps crackdown remain unclear. On Wednesday, the presidentsigned two executive orders designed tobegin building a wall along the border with Mexico, add lockups for detaining immigrants who cross the border illegally, enhance enforcement powers for border agents andstrip federal funding to cities that refuse to cooperate with immigration enforcement.

According to a draft document reviewed by The Times, under the new order, the federal government would threaten to withhold fundsfrom so-called sanctuary citiesthat limit cooperation with immigration officials.

Many political leaders both in big citiesand in Sacramentohave vowed to fight Trump.

Los Angeles MayorEric Garcettitold reporters Wednesday thathe doesnt believe the federal government can stop funding for L.A. and citedthe 10th Amendment, which addresses the powers of state and federal governments.

We feel very strong the legal case is clear, Garcetti said.

The particulars of Trumps orders are still being dissected by Los Angeles leaders. ButCity CouncilPresident Herb Wesson told reporters that the city is going to continue to operate the way it operates.

Los Angeles will receive about $500 million this fiscal year from the federal government to pay for an array of services, includingport security, anti-gang programs and senior citizen services.

San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee said he doesnt foresee any changesin his citys sanctuary policies. Officials in San Jose said much the same thing.

Mother of man killed by illegal immigrant ‘insulted’ by using City Hall as shelter – Boston Herald

The heartbroken mother of a young Milford man struck and killed nearly six years ago by an illegal alien says she is "infuriated" by Mayor Martin J. Walsh's unwavering support of law-busting immigrants.

"I have to say I'm infuriated and insulted by Mayor Marty Walsh's stance that if it comes down to it he will harbor these illegal aliens in City Hall," nurse Maureen Maloney, an outspoken supporter of President Trump, told Boston Herald Radio's "Morning Meeting" crew today.

"I wasn't exactly shocked when I heard it yesterday because he's been saying it all along, as has many other mayors from sanctuary cities around the country. They're pretty eager to protect the illegal aliens, rather than protect the Americans they were elected to represent and protect," she said.

Maloney's son, Matthew Denice, would have celebrated his 29th birthday next month.

Denice was 23 in August 2011 when the motorcycle he was riding was hit and dragged a quarter-mile by a pickup truck driven by an unlicensed Ecuadorian named Nicolas Dutan Guaman. Guaman's 6-year-old son was in the truck when Denice was pulled into a wheel well and mortally wounded in front of helpless onlookers.

Guaman was found guilty in 2014 of motor vehicle homicide and manslaughter, among other charges. He was sentenced to 12 to 14 years in prison.

Denice had just graduated from Fitchburg State University and was planning to attend graduate school to study criminal justice.

When his birthday comes around every Feb. 7 since, a tearful Maloney said, "That day is horrible, but every day is horrible. I feel like I live in two worlds: I have one dead son and one son here. I'm always straddling two worlds.

"The ripple effect of losing Matthew is not just the pain and suffering of me and his immediate family," she stressed. "He had a longtime girlfriend. They were planning on getting married. He had a huge circle of friends and extended relatives. The ripple effect just goes on and on and on.

"I hear them saying that we're separating these (immigrant) families. Well, my family has been permanently separated. And I can't call heaven and I can't visit heaven. I have to go visit a grave," she said. "The illegals do have other options. My son has no options. He had a very promising life, and it's gone. There's no other way to put it."

Maloney said she doesn't just stand behind Trump, who brought her onstage last fall at a campaign rally in Phoenix, Ariz., two months before his stunning defeat of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

"I'm actually in favor and support of anybody who's going to enforce our current immigration laws," she said. "It just so happens that now-President Trump is the one who took the strongest stance on it."

Both Walsh and Somerville Mayor Joseph Curtatone, in separate interviews on Herald Radio this morning, said they would not harbor undocumented immigrants who commit violent crimes.

But Maloney pointed out, "Being in the country illegally is a crime. It's a civil offense, but it's still breaking our law. And then to survive in this country you have to continue to break the laws, whether it's either working using fraudulent I.D. or a Social Security number, or you're working off the books and evading taxes.

"To get to work, people often have to drive without a driver's license. So people are forced to continually break the laws to survive in this country, illegally," she said. "They become serial lawbreakers. And when does it end?"

FLASHBACK: Bill Clinton channels future Donald Trump on illegal immigration [video] – Twitchy

Posted at 1:54 pm on January 26, 2017 by Greg P.

Heres an oldie but a goodie from Numbers USA on President Bill Clintons immigration rhetoric from is 1995 SOTU speech (61 million views and counting!):

Transcript:

All Americans, not only in the states most heavily affected, but in every place in this country, are rightly disturbed by the large numbers of illegal aliens entering our country. The jobs they hold might otherwise be held by citizens or legal immigrants. The public service they use impose burdens on our taxpayers. Thats why our administration has moved aggressively to secure our borders more by hiring a record number of new border guards, by deporting twice as many criminal aliens as ever before, by cracking down on illegal hiring, by barring welfare benefits to illegal aliens.

In the budget I will present to you we will try to do more to speed the deportation of illegal aliens who are arrested for crimes, to better identify illegal aliens in the workplace as recommended by the commission headed by former Congresswoman Barbara Jordan.

We are a nation of immigrants. But we are also a nation of laws. It is wrong and ultimately self-defeating for a nation of immigrants to permit the kind of abuse of our immigration laws we have seen in recent years, and we must do more to stop it.

Positively Trumpian.

Reality Check: Illegal immigration has plummeted – CNN

So how bad is the situation on the southern border? Much better than it has been. In a very long time.

Of those, 408,870 were caught trying to cross into the US from Mexico. That national figure is less than half the 1.1 million people caught on average annually between 1980 and 2008. According to the Border Patrol, "apprehensions are an indicator of total attempts to cross the border illegally."

The number of Mexicans who were apprehended trying to cross the border illegally in fiscal 2015 were near a 50-year low, according to a study by the Pew Research Center.

The falloff in illegal immigration from Mexico is so great that, according to Pew, in recent years, more Mexicans have returned to their country of origin than have tried to come here. The Border Patrol also notes that "far fewer Mexican nationals and single adults are attempting to cross the border without authorization, while far more families and unaccompanied children are fleeing poverty and violence in Central America."

What is different is that "a growing share" of these Central American migrants are surrendering to law enforcement "to seek humanitarian protection" rather than trying to sneak into the US undetected.

Whether the current situation on the southern border represents a crisis is in the eye of the beholder.

But to describe a country where illegal border crossings and apprehensions have dropped dramatically in recent years as a country with no borders is misleading.

Bill O’Reilly: Big crack down on illegal immigration | Fox News – Fox News

Fulfilling a campaign promise, President Trump has ordered the immediate construction of a wall on the Southern border. And not only that.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

TRUMP: Our order also does the following, ends the policy of catch and release at the border. Requires other countries to take back their criminals. They will take them back. Cracks down on sanctuary cities. Empowers ICE officers to target and remove those who pose a threat to the public safety.

(END VIDEOTAPE)

O'REILLY: Mr. Trump signing two executive orders earlier today, which send a signal, a strong signal, that illegal immigration is going to be dealt with in a very aggressive way. To explain further, catch and release is a policy reinstituted by President Obama, where those sneaking across the Southern border could ask for asylum and almost immediately be set free. Sometimes, handed a bus ticket that you and I paid for to an address anywhere in the USA.

Few of those released ever returned for their court hearings. That policy was a scandal. Now, it is finished. Secondly, the sanctuary cities, as you know, have openly defied federal law for decades. Now, federal funds may be denied to those places. So, on day three of President Trump's first week in office, he sent shock waves through the liberal communities. Also, Mr. Trump is calling for a federal investigation into voter fraud, where he alleges that millions of illegal aliens are voting.

That's a good thing, the investigation. We should know if fraud on Election Day is real or not. Also, the President has informed the city of Chicago that if the murder epidemic there doesn't stop, federal authorities will intervene. Another good thing. And that intrusion is likely to happen as Illinois Governor Bruce and Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel will not stop the brutal gang killings. They just won't do it. Which have taken thousands of innocent lives.

How that situation has been allowed to go on for years is another scandal and perhaps the most vivid illustration of racism "Talking Points" is ever seen. So, President Trump is acting quickly and according to a Rasmussen daily presidential tracking poll, Americans are taking notice. Today, the pole has 57 percent of likely U.S. voters approving of Donald Trump's job performance, 43 percent disapproving.

It remains to be seen, however, whether a border wall will be effective, whether sanctuary cities will finally obey the law, and whether ending the Catch and Release Program will slow down illegal border crossings. But at this point, strong federal action is being taken. No question about it.

And that is "The Memo".
