Illegal immigrant community shocked by ICE nabbing popular figure for deportation – TheBlaze.com

The illegal alien Irish community was shocked to discover that a popular immigrant who overstayed his Visa was nabbed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials, and is set to be deported.

John Cunningham is a prominent community figure in the Boston area, with a successful electrician business, but that didnt stop ICE from arresting him for immigration violations.

John Cunningham, an Irish national, was arrested by ICE officers for immigration violations, said ICE spokesman Shawn Neudauer in a statement. Cunningham entered the country lawfully under the Visa Waiver Program, but failed to depart in compliance with the terms of his visit.

A consequence of violating the Visa Waiver program is that Cunningham waives his right to an immigration hearing, and goes into mandatory detention.

Theres a great deal of fear in the Irish American community and the Irish community, said immigration lawyer John Foley, a friend of Cunninghams. I went to see [Mr. Cunningham] on Sunday and, basically, his world has been turned upside down, hes been hit with an immigration tsunami.

Life as he knew it, is over, Mr Foley said.

Boston Mayor Marty Walsh has vowed to protect all illegal aliens in his city, and admonished an Irish politician for petitioning President Trump on behalf of only Irish illegal immigrants.

Its estimated that there are 50,000 Irish citizens illegally residing in the United States.

Critics rip University of California for favoring illegal immigrants over … – Fox News

A California universitys decision to put a limit on the number of American citizens it enrolls -- while placing no such restrictions on illegal immigrants who want to attend the school -- is drawing sharp criticism from education activists.

The regents in the University of California systemrecently instituted Regents Policy 2109in response to state lawmakers threatening to withhold from the university system nearly $20 million if school officials didnt cap the number of out-of-state American students. The university's response to the state governments threat was to limit the percentage of out-of-state American students in the student body to 18 percent on most campuses.

The move is being criticized as discriminatory against Americans.

The UC system, like many others around the country, is routinely giving preferential treatment to illegal aliens at the expense of American students, many of whom are attending at great sacrifice of their parents, Kyle Olson, founder of Education Action Group, told Fox News.

It is disturbing to know the UC system is not even sure how many illegal students it has enrolled and is enabling by not enforcing our immigration laws.

The University of California currently has 16.5 percent of its student body comprised of out-of-state students. Its estimated that there are roughly 3,700 illegal immigrants studying in the UC system.

The regulation, which is known as Regents Policy 2109, was drafted and approved in response to lawmakers in the state threatening to withhold nearly $20 million in public funds to the state college system. (REUTERS/Patrick T. Fallon)

Officials for the University of California say that the school system is simply being consistent with state law.

This policy applies to students who, under California law AB (Assembly Bill) 540, qualify as state residents for tuition purposes, Ricardo Vazquez, spokesman for the University of California, said to Fox News. AB 540 allows students to pay in-state tuition fees if they meet certain requirements.

Olson says the policy may actually hurt the state and its students.

Ultimately, and ironically, the California government is actually penalizing Californians by not counting illegals as out-of-state students and thus allowing them to, in effect, take seats away from in-state students, he said.

Southwest border cities to use IRIS scanning technology to identify inmates, illegal immigrants – Fox News

Criminals and illegal immigrants who get booked into jail along the southwest border will soon have one less way to hide their identity. Their eyes will be photographed with the Inmate Recognition and Identification System (IRIS). The device takes a picture of their iris, which according to police, is more accurate than a fingerprint.

El Paso became the first jurisdiction both in Texas and along the southwest border to receive the technology Friday. Sean Mullin, CEO of BI2 Technologies, who creates IRIS said it will be in every jurisdiction in the Southwest Border Sheriffs Association by the end of the year. That makes up 31 jurisdictions between Brownsville, Texas and San Diego.

Cameron County on the southeast tip of Texas will receive IRIS in the next two weeks and Val Verde County will get on board soon after, according to Larry Guerra, Executive Director for the Texas and South West Border Sheriffs Coalition.

FRESNO SHOOTING RAMPAGE: HOW GUNFIRE DETECTION TECHNOLOGY ALERTED POLICE

According to multiple law enforcement officials, IRIS could have an impact on the fight against illegal crossings. Illegal immigrants, like other criminals, often use aliases to disguise their true identity and prevent law enforcement from learning theyve already been captured.

The El Paso County Jail brings in a little over 30 thousand inmates a year, 16 percent of which are inmates held for the Border Patrol and ICE according to El Paso Sheriff Richard Wiles.

With this technology youll be able to identify the individual under whatever name he wants to use at the time. Whether its immigration or any type of violation, said Guerra. Its not uncommon for somebody to use a different name.

THIS SMART MANNEQUIN AIMS TO IMPROVE PAT-DOWN PROCEDURES AT AIRPORTS

Theyll try to avoid detection with different fraudulently obtained identification and different identities. This system stops that in its tracks, said Mullin.

He added in the last year, over 14,000 inmates who were scanned in one jurisdiction, were arrested again in another jurisdiction and identified using their iris.

The fingerprint process can take up to four hours to check local, state and federal databases. It takes less than 20 seconds for IRIS to get a match, according to Wiles. In addition, fingerprints can come back with multiple potential matches, IRIS comes back with one.

HOW AMBULANCES COULD HELP PREVENT DIRTY BOMBS

The IRIS system was first built about ten years ago and scanned its one millionth eyeball last week.

The jail scanner is set up with a computer. The process starts as an inmate walks up to the camera, looks in a small mirror and the device takes a picture of the eyes. Then it searches the national database. If the inmate has been scanned before, it displays their information, if not, the information can be added.

In addition to the jail scanner, there is also a mobile application that can be connected to a smartphone. This allows officers to search for a suspect and their aliases while remotely connected to a database. The device can also take fingerprints, iris and facial pictures.

While the iris is more accurate than a fingerprint, it will not replace a fingerprint according to Mullin. Unlike fingerprints, criminals do not leave an iris print at the scene of a crime, so it has little forensic value.

Wiles said although the IRIS could be cheaper and quicker, there will likely always be a need for fingerprints.

We would still have to maintain the fingerprints, but I dont think we would have to go to those for an identification.

Border Patrol Agents Arrest Two Illegal Workers after Ben & Jerry’s Protest – Breitbart News

The agents arrestedYesenia Hernandez-Ramos and Esau Peche-Ventura on Saturday after a stop at a routine immigration check. The location of the stop is near the U.S.-Canadian Border. Agents transported the two migrants to a detention facility after determining they had no legal status in the U.S., the Washington Post reported.

The two illegal workers joined with others protesting conditions at a Ben & Jerrys factory in Waterbury, Vermont, Breitbart News reported. The workers marched to demand better pay and living conditions on the farms that provide milk to the nationwide ice cream maker.

We cant wait anymore. We are going to pressure them and see what happens, Mexican migrant worker Victor Diaz told reporters. Diaz is a Mexican immigrant who works on a dairy farm inVergennes.

Following the arrest of the two illegal farm workers, others gathered outside a U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) office in St. Albans.

We were there to denounce the arrest of Esau and Yesenia and to call on ICE to use their discretion to release them back to their families, back to their community so they can continue to live and work in Vermont and continue to raise their voice for their dignity and human rights, Migrant Justice organizer Will Lambek told the Post.

The Washington news outlet reported that Vermont has about 1,000 farm workers who are Latino. They reported that many of those are in the country illegally.

The Migrant Justice group claims their workers are being targeted for selective enforcement by immigration officials. They brought up Enrique Balcazar and Zully Palacios, who protested on Monday. The two migrant workers were arrested in March and were released later that month.

Ben & Jerrys responded to the protests with the following statement:

We are concerned that hard-working, productive members of our community, who contribute to the success of dairy farms in Vermont, would face criminalization. We need policy change that serves Vermonts dairy workers, farmers, and industry as a whole.

The company said it is working to resolve its differences with the workers. They did not make any statement about the illegal immigration status of their workers.
