Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel is officially joining the movement to draft Hillary Rodham Clinton for president.

Emanuel, who also served in the U.S. House of Representatives, will headline two fundraisers for the group in June. His support comes less than a week after Virginia Senator Tim Kaine also backed the effort.

The group - a super PAC that voluntarily caps donations at $25,000 - is not officially affiliated with Clinton, who says she will decide whether to pursue the White House after November's congressional elections. But it boasts the backing of numerous Democratic officials and donors.

Clinton is the overwhelming favorite to be the Democratic nominee in 2016 if she chooses to run again. Preliminary polling shows her leading all other potential White House aspirants after she served for four years as Secretary of State under Obama.

The former First Lady and New York senator lost the hard-fought 2008 nomination battle to then-Illinois Senator Obama, and has since openly spoken about the difficulties of presidential campaigns.

The June release of Clinton's memoir of her time at the State Department is expected to kick off a more intense national discussion of her presidential prospects.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel endorses Hillary Clinton. Big deal?

Even though Rahm Emanuel worked in the Clinton White House, he declined to endorse Hillary Clinton in 2008. Now, he says that next early month, hell speak at two Chicago-area fundraisers for the Ready for Hillary 'super PAC.'

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel thinks Hillary Rodham Clinton should sit in the Oval Office. Hes said that in the past, but now hes turning up the volume on his support for a 2016 Clinton presidential bid.

Among other things, Mayor Emanuel says that next early month, hell speak at two Chicago-area fundraisers for the Ready for Hillary "super PAC."

Im proud to make my support for her official, and Im even prouder to join more than two million Americans encouraging her to run, Emanuel said of the ex-first lady and former secretary of State.

Why is this important? Well, Emanuel used to be President Obamas chief of staff, if you remember. Even though he worked in the Clinton White House, he declined to endorse Ms. Clinton in 2008, instead officially backing Mr. Obama just a few days before she dropped out of the race.

Thus his enthusiasm for Clinton now represents something of a connection between the current Democratic administration and Clintonland. Sorry about that, Joe Biden.

Rahm Emanuel backs Hillary Clinton for president

Washington (CNN) Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel made his support for Hillary Clinton official on Friday, announcing through a pro-Clinton super PAC that he supports the former secretary of state for president, if she runs.

The former political adviser to Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama said he has seen Clinton's work firsthand and encouraged her to seek the office.

"When I worked with her in the White House, I saw what an effective leader she was," he said, adding that he knows "as president, she would continue to move our country forward."

"Hillary is smart, she's determined, and most importantly, she is a champion for the American people," Emanuel said in a statement released by Ready for Hillary, a pro-Clinton super PAC.

"I'm proud to make my support for her official, and I'm even prouder to join more than two million Americans encouraging her to run," he said. In addition to supporting Clinton, Ready for Hillary announced that Emanuel will headline two of the group's fundraisers in Chicago on June 5.

Emanuel's support for a Clinton run was not a secret, but Friday's announcement made it official. Last October, Emanuel told CNN's Jake Tapper, "Im behind Hillary if she runs. And I think she will, but thats up to her. If she runs, Im in."

Ready for Hillary, with backing from a number of close Clinton advisers, is one of a handful of pro-Clinton super PACs that are working to urge Clinton to run in 2016.

Although their main focus has been in building a list of supporters and volunteers for a hypothetical Clinton campaign, they have recently been lining up a number of high-profile endorsements for the former first lady.

Last week, Ready for Hillary announced that Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia was joining their effort and thereby supporting a possible Clinton bid.
