In her first public appearance since the weekend birth of granddaughter Charlotte, Hillary Clinton spoke at an event this evening in New York for an organization that cares for the families of fallen military members, who greeted her with moving stories of their loved ones.
This a great privilege, but it is also for me emotional as we celebrate the birth of our granddaughter and as I look out and see all of you who are thinking of your loved ones and the life that he or she lived, Clinton said at the event for the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors or TAPS, a group that supports, connects and provides grief resources to military families who have lost loved ones.

In the introduction, TAPS president Bonnie Carroll told Clinton she is family and gave her the organizations Lifetime Service Award. Clinton spoke at another event for the group in 2006 and has served as an honorary chairwoman.
Throughout her speech, some in the crowd became emotional and many of them took to the rope line afterwards to share stories of their deceased family members and show photos, with several telling her heartbreaking stories. Some just wanted to take a photo with Clinton, but many more had a story to tell.
One woman, after telling the former secretary of state about her fallen husband, said, I miss him every day, thank you for coming.
Clinton listened to their stories and expressed her condolences, saying over and over again, I am so, so sorry, at times holding the family members hands. One man who urged Clinton to run for president also told her about his nephew who he said got the run around and got screwed at the VA, referring to the Department of Veterans Affairs.

NEW YORK (AP) - A support group for families of fallen military members honored Hillary Rodham Clinton on Wednesday with its Lifetime Service Award.
Clinton was given the award by the Tragedy Assistance Program for Survivors at an event in the city. She has served as an honorary chairwoman of the organization, which provides grief resources and peer support to people whose loved ones in the military have died.
TAPS President Bonnie Carroll told Clinton the members of the organization considered her as family. She said Clinton has remained faithful to honoring and remembering all those who have served and sacrificed.
Clinton said the moment was emotional for her, especially with the birth last week of her granddaughter. She praised the organization for the connections it has made between grieving families, giving them a community.
This kind of community of support and shared experience has really made all the difference in the lives of so many, she said.
Clinton, a former U.S. first lady and secretary of state and a potential 2016 presidential candidate, then spoke with several attendees one on one and posed for photographs.

In a tight race with Republican Scott Brown, Shaheen could benefit from support from the possible 2016 presidential candidate.
The fundraiser could be a precursor to a visit by Clinton to New Hampshire later this month. Such a trip would generate some buzz, but Republicans are quick to point out it would also raise some questions.
Shaheen met with a women's group in Portsmouth on Wednesday, hours before the New York fundraiser.
"To have (Clinton) help with resources on the campaign, which is always a challenge, it's very nice to have her do this, especially since she's a new grandmother," Shaheen said.
In 2008, Shaheen was a first-time Senate candidate when she joined forces with Clinton in New Hampshire, helping her eke out a narrow victory over Barack Obama in the primary.
Democratic strategist Jim Demers worked with Obama in that election, and he said Clinton's help in 2014 can't be overlooked.
"I think Hillary Clinton can deliver a message," Demers said. "She can help energize women. When you think about the top of our ticket, it's all women. So it's a natural place for Hillary Clinton to play a part."
Former longtime Republican U.S. Sen. Judd Gregg conceded that as a person, Clinton has star power. But he said that substantively, as the former secretary of state, she also has baggage voters won't overlook.
