Hillary Clinton has big lead over Elizabeth Warren in 2016 matchup among Dems

As she reportedly lays the groundwork for an all-but-declared presidential run in 2016, former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton leads Sen. Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts by commanding margins in new polls testing Democrats preference for their 2016 presidential nominee.

In a head-to-head matchup, Mrs. Clinton leads Mrs. Warren, 62 percent to 22 percent, when respondents were asked who they would vote for if the 2016 Democratic presidential primary were held in their state today, according to a Rasmussen poll. Sixteen percent were undecided and 18 percent said they had not heard of Mrs. Warren.

Mrs. Warren has consistently rejected calls for her to enter the race from liberal activist groups, who say her populist broadsides against Wall Street and lobbying in favor of proposals like raising the federal minimum wage would be a welcome part of the partys debate over a 2016 message.

But Mrs. Clinton led in every demographic in the poll, including liberal Democrats.

In a separate USA Today/Suffolk University poll out Monday, 51 percent of Democrats and Democratic-leaning voters named Mrs. Clinton as their preferred nominee, compared to 31 percent who were undecided and 5 percent who named Mrs. Warren.

Mrs. Clinton also won support from 57 percent of those who identified themselves as liberal or very liberal, the wing of the party seemingly most likely to opt for Mrs. Warren.

Polling ahead of the 2008 Democratic presidential primary contest also showed Mrs. Clinton with commanding leads before then-Sen. Obama announced his candidacy.

Hillary Clinton 2016 presidential campaign '100 percent' likely: report

There is no doubt about Hillary Clinton running for president in 2016, at least according to a new report today from Politico.

Citing sources close to Clinton and her election team, Politico reports that the former First Lady and Secretary of State is going to officially announce her 2016 campaign in April, just after the end of 2015's first quarter. Her first fundraising report is expected to be a "blockbuster."

Sources also told Politico that every major campaign position for Clinton has been filled, with the exception of communications director.

According to the report, Bill Clinton is already deeply involved in the campaign. He was able to get a "heads-up" from George H.W. Bush ahead of former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush's announcement in December that he was going to "actively explore" a campaign himself. Clinton apparently considers Jeb Bush a "real threat" to Hillary's presidential prospects.

Bill Clinton also sees New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie as "probably just a sideshow."

Hillary Clinton's camp is also reportedly already exploring potential Vice Presidential candidates, including Colorado Sen. Michael Bennet, Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine, New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker, and Julian Castro, the secretary of Housing and Urban Development.

The New York Daily News pointed out that Politico's report is almost eight years to the day from Clinton's announcement in January 2007 that she would run for president in 2008.

ABC News noted that Clinton has been keeping a low profile in recent weeks after a "rocky book rollout" and over the summer and several hiccups during the midterm campaign season. Some see her as "politically rusty", according to ABC's report, which suggests that staying out of the spotlight now helps lower Clinton's chances of making mistakes that will stay with her throughout the campaign.

ABC also points out that Clinton doesn't have to worry about making a name for herself, so she can enjoy some leisure time to spend with family prepare for her upcoming campaign.

"Part of doing something right is ... taking the time to balance the advice she is getting with her own thoughts," one unnamed adviser told Politico. "She's in no rush. People have been putting a red 'X' on the calendar for a long time, but that isn't necessarily happening internally."

Inside Hillary Clinton's 2016 plan

Not only is she running, but we have a very good idea of what it will look like.

Hillary Clinton is in the final stages of planning a presidential campaign that is likely to launch in early April, and has made decisions on most top posts, according to numerous Democrats in close contact with the Clintons and their aides.

Story Continued Below

Campaign advisers say the likelihood of a campaign, long at 98 percent (she never really hesitated, according to one person close to her), went to 100 percent right after Christmas, when Clinton approved a preliminary budget and several key hires.

Most of the top slots have been decided, with one notable exception: communications director, a job that is now the subject of intense lobbying and jockeying by some of the biggest names in Democratic politics. One top contender is White House Communications Director Jennifer Palmieri, who is close to likely campaign chairman John Podesta.

Numerous lessons from Clintons failed 08 campaign are being baked into the 2016 plan, including a determination to improve relations with the press or, at the very least, to have a good cop role to help her get off on a better foot with the journalists who will help shape her image.

Reflecting other lessons learned, the campaign is being planned with more of a big-tent mentality, as one adviser put it. And Bill Clinton is being integrated from the start, after feeling isolated from parts of her campaign against Barack Obama.

One component of Hillary Clintons emerging strategy involves quietly but aggressively courting key endorsers from the left, who could help increase progressives comfort level and take the wind out of a potential challenge. Two top targets: Robert Reich, the economist and former Labor secretary for her husband, and Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.), the civil-rights icon. In December, she won public endorsements from Howard Dean and Sen. Al Franken (D-Minn.).

Bill Clinton is already deeply engaged in the campaign, warning that Jeb Bush is a real threat, while New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie is probably just a sideshow.

The former president got a heads-up from the camp of President George H.W. Bush a few days before Jeb Bush made his surprise Facebook announcement in December that he would actively explore a campaign. The two former presidents have developed a friendly bond, partly because of their work together on earthquake relief for Haiti.
