Hillary Clinton goes mum on NSA, skirts surveillance fight …

Last September, Hillary Clinton strode to a podium in Philadelphia to deliver what she advance-billed as a policy speech addressing the roiling controversy over government surveillance in a digital era.

We are once again in the middle of some big, noisy debates. What are the demands of Americas global leadership in a changing world? Clinton asked. How do we provide both security and liberty at home and abroad? Every era faces its own questions and has to fashion its own answers, and we are no different.

She spoke for 11 more minutes that night but never actually provided any concrete answers as to how the balance between security and privacy should be struck.

And she hasnt since.

Clinton aides indicated at the time that she largely abandoned her planned speech at the National Constitution Center because President Barack Obama decided to address the nation that same night about his decision to seek congressional approval to use force in Syria. Indeed, she mentioned Obamas imminent White House address and called for a strong response to the Syrian crisis.

While Clintons decision to put aside her original speech that night was understandable, her near silence on the issue since has been more open to question. As the national debate over the National Security Agencys broad array of data collection programs has rolled on, courts, lawmakers, blue-ribbon panels and even Obama himself have weighed on the legality, effectiveness and wisdom of the snooping. Clinton has not.

But its not clear how long she can keep up the silent treatment: As she mulls a bid for the White House in 2016, shes beginning to face pressure to outline her views on the surveillance issue more clearly.

Other potential 2016 contenders ranging from Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) to Gov. Chris Christie (R-N.J.) to Gov. Martin OMalley (D-Md.) have weighed in. Paul, who has taken a staunchly libertarian stand against the NSA programs, filed a class-action lawsuit over the surveillance last week. By contrast, Christie and OMalley have warned about the dangers of retreating in the battle against terrorism.

Playing the Bill & Hillary Clinton blame game is for losers

Is Bill Clinton still president?

Has he been caught fooling around with another intern in the Oval Office? Has Paula Jones filed another lawsuit? Is Hillary Clinton still standing by her bad man?

I must be in the 1990s again.

Why else would I have seen Kathleen Willey on TV talking about Bill Clinton repeatedly getting away with sexual harassment because Hillary ran smear campaigns aimed at discrediting his victims like her?

Why else would a Republican senator be making news by attacking Bill Clinton for being a sexual predator?

Excuse my confusion.

I realize Im not the one whos been time traveling.

Its Rand Paul and the conservative media who are reliving the lowlights of the Clinton years and replaying the Slick Willie sex card.

In a futile effort to pre-taint Hillary Clintons expected presidential run, Sen. Paul introduced the Bill Clinton sex angle into the 2016 campaign earlier this month.

Reminding everyone Clinton was a professional sex hound, Sen. Paul said he didnt think itd be a good idea to elect Hillary president because her unseemly hubby would have the run of the Oval Office again.

The esteemed political writer Charlie Cook recently produced a column titled Is Hillary Clinton Too Old to Run? Despite couching his thoughts with a mention that if Clinton were to run, she would be the same age as Ronald Reagan when he was first elected president, 69, he did venture over the sexismline.

The giveaway came toward the end when Cook noted that Clinton could be challenged for the nomination by Vice President Joe Biden, without noting Bidens age. Biden is almost five years older than sheis.

In response to the raised eyebrows, Cooks next column

In response to the raised eyebrows, Cooks next column was headlined Is Joe Biden Too Old to Run? In it, Cook explained that the Clinton column was not about the vice president. True, but it was about the age of presidential candidates, wasntit?

Both men and women face age discrimination, but its no secret that for women, ageism mixes easily with sexism. And obsessing over a womans year of birth is often a slightly more respectable substitute for thelatter.

Of course, age can be a consideration as it relates to questions of health. The best approach is to take the candidates one at a time. Frankly, Id rather be insuring 71-year-old Joe Biden than 51-year-old Chris Christie, New Jerseys overweight governor and an oft-mentioned presidential candidate (though not so much thesedays).
