George Zimmerman injured after shooting – CNN.com

Story highlights George Zimmerman was injured from broken glass after a bullet flew through his truck The other man involved said Zimmerman had waved a gun, and he acted in self-defense

Zimmerman and Apperson have had tense encounters before. In September, Apperson accused the former neighborhood watch volunteer of threatening him in what Zimmerman's lawyer described as a "quasi-road rage incident."

Two days later, police stopped Zimmerman after Apperson called 911 to say he thought he saw Zimmerman near his office.

No charges were filed in either of those cases. But on Monday, Apperson allegedly fired a shot into Zimmerman's truck in Lake Mary, Florida. It's just the latest case involving Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin in 2012.

Exactly what happened Monday depends on which side you ask.

Zimmerman's attorney Don West said a man driving behind his client was flashing his lights and honking his horn at him.

"The man pulled up next to George yelling obscenities at him," West told CNN.

Zimmerman recognized Apperson as someone he had a problem with several months ago, the attorney said.

"He rolled his window up and he decided to get away, not to provoke it whatsoever," West said. "And the fellow followed him -- followed him around the U-turn and then pulled up to him and shot at him."

The bullet went through Zimmerman's side window and almost hit him in the head, West said. Zimmerman was hit by glass from the window, but not the bullet. He was taken to a hospital for minor injuries and then released, police said.

George Zimmerman: 911 Calls Released in Florida Shooting …

In a dramatic 911 call released today from a shooting involving a man firing his gun at George Zimmerman, a caller told a police dispatcher that "a guy just said he had to pull a gun on a guy."

The caller explained to the operator that the "guy" -- referring to the alleged shooter Matthew Apperson -- said "he had to shoot at someone through his window so he wants the police to come. ... He said it was George Zimmerman."

On Monday, a police officer in Lake Mary, Florida was flagged down by Zimmerman, who said someone had fired at him while he was in his car, according to a statement from the Lake Mary Police Department.

At the same time, someone called 911 on behalf of Apperson, reporting that he had said he shot Zimmerman, police said.

Apperson looked "visibly shaken" in the aftermath of the shooting, according to a man who called 911 after the incident.

Bystander Ken Cornell said a man -- who identified himself to police as Apperson -- came up to him, screaming, "Please call 911. ... I just shot George Zimmerman."

Police: George Zimmerman involved in Florida shooting …

Story highlights George Zimmerman was involved in a shooting, police in Florida say He suffered minor injuries, police say

Zimmerman and the man who shot at him had been in an ongoing dispute, police in Lake Mary, Florida, said, though both men involved in the incident were yet to be interviewed by police, pending the presence of their attorneys.

No arrests have been made or charges filed in relation to the shooting, which is in the early stages of the investigation.

Lake Mary police spokeswoman Bianca Gillett confirmed that the man who shot at Zimmerman, Matthew Apperson, is the same person who called police last year because he felt threatened by Zimmerman.

According to police, Zimmerman flagged down a Lake Mary police officer shortly after 1 p.m. Monday, saying he was involved in a shooting.

At about the same time, someone called 911 for Apperson to say he was the other person involved in the shooting.

Zimmerman was not the shooter in the incident, Gillett said. He was transported to the hospital for minor injuries and then released, she said.

The details of what led to the shooting will be determined by the ongoing investigation, Gillett said.

Meanwhile, conflicting versions of the incident have emerged from the two men involved.

Zimmerman attorney Don West told CNN that a driver behind Zimmerman began flashing his lights and honking his horn at him.

George Zimmerman, the neighborhood watch volunteer who has had a series of run-ins with girlfriends, his ex-wife and random strangers since killing an unarmed black teenager, narrowly missed getting shot Monday after a mysterious dispute.

The dispute this time was with the same man that authorities said was involved in a road rage incident with Zimmerman last year. A bullet missed his head, spraying glass from the vehicle's windshield, said his attorney, Don West. He said the bullet lodged somewhere in the vehicle. He was treated at a hospital and released.

No charges were immediately filed against either man.

Lake Mary Police Officer Bianca Gillett said during a news conference Monday that Matthew Apperson called 911 to report the shooting shortly after Zimmerman flagged down an officer to say someone had shot at him. Both Zimmerman and Apperson have yet to be interviewed formally by investigators, she said.

"We have not determined how or why the incident or altercation began," Gillett said.

A woman who answered the phone at the disability-benefits business where Apperson works asked a reporter never to call again. Nobody answered the door at his Winter Springs condominium, where there is a "for sale" sign out front and a lock box on the door.

Last September, Apperson said Zimmerman threatened to kill him, asking "Do you know who I am?" during a confrontation in their vehicles. Apperson decided not to pursue charges, and police officers were unable to move forward without a car tag identified or witnesses.

"I explained to Matthew that without the tag, witnesses, and/or clear video identifying the driver as George Zimmerman, it might be difficult to prove the alleged suspect was in fact Zimmerman," the Lake Mary police officer wrote in a report last September.

West said before the news conference that Zimmerman thought he knew who was responsible for the shooting and is cooperating with authorities.

Zimmerman was acquitted in the February 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, an unarmed black teenager, in a case that sparked protests and national debate about race relations. The Justice Department later announced it was not bringing a civil rights case against Zimmerman.
