9 free tools that make Windows much better

Windows is packed to the rafters with features, many of them greatand others, just meh. Luckily, there are free alternatives that are more powerful, more efficient, and take only minutes to install. Read on, and well show you 9 built-in features of Windows that arent up to snuff, and the free software you can use to replace them.

The search functionality in Windows 8 is fast and well-integrated with the new Start Screen. Still, the Start Screen search isnt perfect: It cant find files that arent executables or documents. If you want to search through every file on your system, you have to use the excruciatingly slow File Explorer search. Or, you can use Everything.

You type and Everything finds what you're looking for, narrowing down the results letter by letter like a faster, local Google Instant Search.

Everything is an indexed search utility that lets you search through every single file on your system, practically instantly. Just type a file name, and before youre done youll see what youre looking for. Yes, it really is that fast. For even faster access, pin it to your toolbar.

Its ironic that one of the simplest things you do in Windows can be one of the most frustrating. File transfers have gotten better in recent versions of Windows, but they can still take a long time, and faulty transfers are a great way to ruin your afternoon (especially if your afternoon consists of shuffling numerous files around).

Teracopy makes shuffling large batches of files an absolute breeze.

Particularly in Windows 7 or earlier, you should immediately update your system with TeraCopy, a free utility that speeds up file moves substantially and protects you from failed transfersit'll skip over a file that generates an error, rather than sending the entire transfer grinding to a halt. It also allows you to pause and resume transfers at any time, and even better, it integrates directly with Windows Explorer, so once its installed you can just drag and drop files like usual but with the full benefits TeraCopy provides.

In Windows 8 you can take a screenshot by pressing Win-PrtScn, but to take a whole bunch at once, you should get a dedicated screenshot app.

Greenshot gives you granular, customizable controls for quick and "just-right" screenshot taking.

There are more contenders than you'd expect, but we recommend Greenshot. It lets you bind hotkeys to all sorts of screenshot commands (capture the whole screen, just a window, and just a region, for instance), and specify what will happen with those screenshots. You can automatically open a Save As dialogue, open the screenshots in a lightweight image editor, or save them directly to your hard drive using a naming scheme of your choice.

Free and open source software key for multicore hardware

Press Release,

New Zealand, February 3, 2014.

Free and open source software key to taking advantage of multicore hardware

Free and open source software will almost undoubtedly be the way to manage hugely powerful multicore computers says Nicolas Erdody.

The organiser of Multicore World 2014 Conference at Aucklands AUT on 25 and 26 February, says computer engineers are beginning to get to grips with writing programs to effectively handle many cores on one chip (multicore), which dramatically increases computing processing power.

But theres many different approaches to how to provide these instructions, and weve assembled a world-class range of speakers to outline these software advances, which so far havent matched the massive hardware increases by computer-chip manufacturers, says Erdody.

For IT managers, CTOs & CIOs, computer engineers and developers and anyone with even a hint of interest in where computing is heading, this conference will be invaluable.

Among the speakers is Associate Professor Manuel Chakravarty of the University of New South Wales who will illustrate how the Accelerate open source framework delivers a competitive multicore performance with a fraction of the effort of alternatives.

The Lead Data Technologist at Germanys codecentric AG, Pavlo Baron, will explain why their approach is to use Java Virtual Machine (JVM) as a way to deal with multiple millions of events per second in a multicore environment.

New Zealands Catalyst IT, who are also one of the conferences sponsors, will have its Cloud Engineer Ricardo Rocha describe some of the significant shifts that have occurred in data storage systems, where new interfaces aim to relax, and speed up, some of the traditional access protocols.

Top Crowdfunding Campaign Now Accepts Open Source Money

Helsinki, Finland (PRWEB) February 04, 2014

Macecraft Software has announced the integration of cryptocurrency wallets for Bitcoin, Litecoin and Dogecoin as part of the recent efforts to fund the release of its flagship software product, jv16 PowerTools as free, open source software.

I love open source and I love money, so we wanted to take the extra step and accept open source money such as Bitcoin, Litecoin and, of course, Dogecoin, said Jouni Flemming, lead developer at Macecraft Software. I believe this is the way of the future, and something that our users have been asking us to do, he continued.

Using Indiegogo, a well-known crowdfunding campaign portal, Macecraft Software has already raised over 17% of its funding target in under 10 days into the campaign, with over 50 days remaining. While Indiegogo is not yet accepting crypto coins as a method of payment, Macecraft Software has released its own wallet addresses and made them available for its community to chip in with their coins towards the campaign objective.

The three options made available by the company in order to fund their project are Bitcoin (wallet address: 1FT5doKEsB4wRxHXsuWPELwGRtWGmEWhsj), Litecoin (wallet address: LaT8ZN9WCFsVdFiApwX2fg5CCLuDcdaAvf) and Dogecoin (wallet address: DCs46NQ3esvUtGRLHP2WioFFiDR1APiXub).

Making jv16 PowerTools free, open source software by crowdfunding with open source crypto currencies such as Bitcoin makes all the sense in the world! It is something that was never done before for turning commercial software into open source and we hope that by pioneering such an initiative our community will help us spread the word, said Mihai Barbulescu, crowdfunding campaign coordinator at Macecraft Software.

For non-cryptocurrency funders, the crowdfunding campaign is available at: http://www.indiegogo.com/projects/jv16-powertools-as-open-source.

For more information on the release of jv6 PowerTools as open source as well as current crowdfunding campaign goals, news and updates visit the official Macecraft Software company website at:
