Vast majority of software developers now use open source, Forrester reports

In its eighth and most expansive annual survey of open-source technology adoption in the enterprise development community yet, Forrester Research Inc. has found that the overwhelming majority of software engineers now incorporate free software into their workflows. That proliferation mirrors the growing corporate participation in the movement, which the firm says is already seeing over half of all enterprises either adapt or actively contribute code.

Both developers and organizations are adopting open-source software based on merit rather than ideology, according to the findings of the report. A full 80 percent of the more than 1,200 coders from tech firms and traditional companies that participated in the survey said they use free tools because theyre functionally superior to commercial alternatives in the same category, while 72 percent said the broad participation in open-source projects can make the codemore secure.

At the same time, the ability to access the underlying source code of open-source software, add features and fix bugs went up from the eighth spot on developers list of pluses to fourth while ease of deployment climbed to number three.

Corporate decision-makers have also grown more enthusiastic about community-led software in recent years and its not hard to see why. Forrester claims that open-source solutions can help shave 68 percent off operating costs in some areas while improving the efficiency of technology infrastructure nearly as much, freeing up time for more productive endeavors.

Cloud and virtualization is the segment where open-source software has gained the most fans, with 73 percent of respondents saying theyre using free solutions in that area, while content management follows close behind at 66 percent. And over on the mobile front, 61 percent of developers said theyre leveraging open-source solutions to tackle the fast-evolving requirements of smartphone and tablet users. In the future, Forrester expects drone development, gaming and enterprise resource management to join the list of segments benefiting the most from the movement, along with historically slow-moving sectors such as government, healthcare and education.

Autodesk gives schools $25 million in free software

Autodesk has pledged to offer secondary schools, vocational institutions and universities in Australia and New Zealand (A/NZ) free access to its 3D design software and creativity apps to a value of $25 million.

The vendor has also launched a Design the Future program which provides secondary school teachers with free software training and project-based curricula which integrates software and apps into standard lesson plans.

Autodesk expects the initiatives to assist educators across 3400 schools in teaching critical problem-solving skills and prepare students for careers in science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM).

With free access to Autodesk software, schools can expose students to the technological advancements that are revolutionising the professional world, from Cloud and mobile technologies to 3D printing," Autodesk education programs manager, Brenton Wyett, said.

Autodesk said it already has a presence across "many A/NZ schools," including the likes of Melbourne secondary school, the King David School, and Newcastle's Merewether High School.

The King David School incorporated Autodesk tools into classword, and uses the software to support its First Robotics and CanSat programs.

"We've recently expanded the use of Autodesk software in our Physics curriculum by having students design, 3D print and present a space-based observatory as part of their study in multi-wavelength astronomy," King David School science and technology educator, Milorad Cerovac, said.

"These hands-on learning activities, made possible by partnerships with industry, not only prepare them for the demands of STEAM-based courses, but also provide students with important skills valued by prospective employers."

Merewether High School is using the software to support participation in the international F1 in Schools design competition.

Voice Recognition Software Procurement Category Market Research Report from IBISWorld has Been Updated

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) October 29, 2014

Voice recognition software exhibits a buyer power score of 4.6, representing a high level of buyer negotiation power. The primary factor driving buyer power is the easy access to substitutes. Windows operating systems come standard with voice recognition software, and buyers can also choose from a handful of free voice recognition software packages, says IBISWorld procurement analyst Dale Schmidt. Neither of these options offers the same accuracy and robustness as paid voice recognition software, but they are still viable options for many buyers.

The existence of no-charge voice recognition software has led to significant consolidation in the market because many vendors have not been able to compete with these options. Nuance Communications has been on an acquisition spree over the last several years and now controls a substantial share of the market. The consolidation of vendors has had a significant negative effect on buyer power because buyers who demand the accuracy and features of voice recognition software have few options beyond Nuance's offerings, adds Schmidt.

In addition, voice recognition software is known for its steep learning curve. It can take months for users to fully reap the time-saving benefits of software and its features. Until that point, the difficulty of using software will consume the time the software promises to save. As a result, buyers need to be careful when selecting software because switching to a new program will cost additional training time.

However, despite market consolidation and a steep learning curve for voice recognition software, market conditions still favor buyers. The remaining vendors have been steadily lowering prices to better compete with free offerings, and vendors have strong financial positions with stable supply chains. As a result, buyers do not need to worry about sudden price spikes or service interruptions.
