8 Free Privacy Programs Worth Your Year-End Donations

Free software isnt free. Someones got to shell out for the expensive development, maintenance, bug fixes and updates for programs that so many of us who live online have come to see as almost natural resources. And increasingly, those taken-for-granted tools have become vital for the privacy and security of millions of people.

So as the end of 2014 approaches, this might be the time to add a few free software security projects like the ones weve listed below to your annual tax-deductible donations. Theres no way around it. If we want tools that are secure and usable, then these projects need funding, says Trevor Timm, executive director of the Freedom of the Press Foundation, a non-profit that has run fundraising campaigns for encryption software. They dont have a business model. Theyre not doing this to make money. Their first priority is the security of users.

A year of Snowden-fueled privacy interest, Timm adds, has driven a new crowd to cash-strapped free software privacy projects for whom every new user often represents a new demand on resources. When a lot of these projects started, there wasnt a giant user base. Now so many people depend on these tools for privacy, says Timm. If were going to use them, its important to give back to the projects that created them.

Here are a few of WIREDs suggestions for your yuletide crypto philanthropy:

Tor

Tor, whose name comes from the acronym The Onion Router, remains perhaps the worlds most effective tool for evading surveillance online. By encrypting a users traffic in layers and routing it through randomly chosen computers spread around the world, Tor makes it nearly impossible to track down a users identity or censor his or her Web browsing. In the wake of Snowdens revelations, the tool has nearly doubled in usage to around two million active users, straining its infrastructure.

Tor receives much of its funding from the U.S. military and the State Department. But Freedom of the Presss Timm says that government funding shouldnt dissuade individuals from donating. One part of the US government may the biggest funder of an encryption project, at the same time as other parts of the government want to see it outlawed, says Timm, referring in part to the FBI director James Comeys recent statements about encryptions dangers. If people really want to support projects like Tor, they should help them become less reliant on that government funding.

Tails

The operating system Tails, or The Amnesiac Incognito Live System, has all the properties of the ideal private operating system. It boots from a USB drive, leaving no trace on the computer its running on. And it routes all the users traffic over Tor, foiling even malware attacks that might be designed to cause a Tor users computer to leak identifying data.

Edward Snowden himself has praised Tails as a means to strengthen vulnerable communication endpoints. And filmmaker Laura Poitras used Tails when communicating with Snowden for months to arrange his unprecedented leak of NSA secrets. Despite all of that, Tails has received little mainstream support and may be the security software most in need of users donations.

EU flings 1m at open source security audit wheeze

EU institutions have finally got the memo about it being a good idea to pinpoint and fix security vulnerabilities.

Next year the European Parliament has allocated up to 1m for a project to audit free software programs in use at the European Commission (EC) and the EU Parliament in order to find and repair potential weaknesses.

A further 500,000 is being made available to work on encrypting communications among EU institutions.

Free Software Foundation Europe president Karsten Gerloff, said it was good to see the institutions investing at least a little in improving the quality and the programs they use.

However, he added that to make the best use of their efforts, institutions should work closely with upstream developers and make audit results public as soon as possible.

John Sullivan, executive director, Free Software Foundation, said: Free software cannot guarantee your security, and in certain situations may appear less secure on specific vectors than some proprietary programs. As was widely agreed in the aftermath of the OpenSSL Heartbleed bug, the solution is not to trade one security bug for the very deep insecurity inherently created by proprietary software - the solution is to put energy and resources into auditing and improving free programs.

The EC runs its IT on more than 350 Linux servers. All new web applications are protected by an open source-based solution for authentication, currently serving more than 300 existing web applications, more than 60,000 users and performing more than 10,000,000 authentications on a yearly basis with more than 17,000 different users every day, according to the commishs informatics department (DG DIGIT).

Within the EC's IT network an open source-based developer collaboration platform hosts more than 770 projects accessed by more than 3,000 developers.

WingX Pro7 Introduces CFI Free! And SV Free!

Tue, Dec 23, 2014

With WingX Rewind , pilots are recording flights and playing the flights back in Google Earth or in their favorite 3D viewer. Pilots can even replay flights right in WingX Pro7 on the iPad! No other EFB has this capability. CFI Free! provides every CFI with a free solution to integrate WingX Pro7 and WingX Rewind into their flight training.

Certificated Flight Instructors (CFIs) get the following for free: - A WingX Pro7 subscription including WingX Rewind - An Advanced IFR subscription with Approach Chart Geo-Referencing and IAP Routing - A Synthetic Vision subscription

WingX Pro7 introduced Synthetic Vision on iPad and iPhone more than 3 years ago, and has worked hard with many partners to integrate external devices so that we don't force pilots to buy a proprietary device. Some of these devices provide AHRS data that enables WingX Pro7's Synthetic Vision engine to render the pitch and bank of the outside world in amazing real-time. Synthetic Vision is now free for all pilots with a current WingX Pro7 subscription.

We are very excited to announce two new initiatives as we head into 2015. The WingX Rewind launch has been incredible. Many CFIs are integrating WingX Rewinds record and playback capability into their flight training. We want every Flight Instructor to have this valuable instructional tool," said Dr. Hilton Goldstein, CEO of Hilton Software.

"Today we are introducing the CFI Free! initiative so that Flight Instructors get a WingX Pro7 subscription, our industry-leading Advanced IFR Subscription, and our Synthetic Vision subscription for free. But we didnt stop there. All WingX Pro7 pilots with a current subscription get our Synthetic Vision subscription for free. CFI Free! and SV Free! is our way of saying thank you for a wonderful decade of support.

WingX Pro7 is available now in the Apple App Store. WingX Rewind requires a current WingX Pro7 subscription.
