IRS partnership provides Free tax software

The Internal Revenue Service and the Free File Alliance announced the launch of Free File, which makes brand-name tax software products and electronic filing available to most taxpayers in Washington for free.

Free File software can help taxpayers with tax preparation, including the health care law that will affect almost everyone.

Free File is available only at IRS.gov/FreeFile, through a partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance, a consortium of 14 leading tax software companies.

You dont have to be an expert on taxes or the new health care law. Free File software can help walk you through the rules and help you get it right, said John Koskinen, IRS Commissioner. For 12 years, this partnership between the IRS and the Free File Alliance had helped taxpayers save both money and time. The real winner in this partnership has been the nations taxpayers.

Taxpayers who earned $60,000 or less last year are eligible to choose from among 14 software products. Those who earned more are still eligible for Free File Fillable Forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms.

Free File offers easy-to-use products that ask questions and supplies answers. The software will find the right forms, find the right tax credits and deductions and even do the math. Free File also can help taxpayers with the new health care requirements. Almost everyone will need to do something new when filing a tax return this year.

Free File will be available through October 2015. Taxpayers who cannot meet the April 15 tax deadline can also use Free File to file a six-month extension.

Paessler offers SMBs free network monitoring software

Network monitoring software provider, Paessler AG, is now offering, what was a commercial license for its PRTG 100 software, as a free download.

This will enable SMEs, start-ups or private users operating elaborate home networks, to better monitor their IT infrastructure to avoid downtime or disruption to the network. PRTG 100 will provide users with the complete range of functions, including remote probes enabling network monitoring at different locations.

The license provides 100 sensors that can monitor servers, switches, (terminal) devices, virtual environments and even applications, as required by the individual business.

Regular software updates, comprehensive support through manuals and video tutorials are also included.

Further, administrators can download the app version of PRTG Network Monitor for free, to get updates on their network status while on the go. The app is available for iOS, Android, Blackberry (Beta) and Windows Phone. Paessler chief executive and founder, Dirk Paessler, said network monitoring solutions could be of particular benefit to smaller organisations where personnel and financial resources were limited.

For example, the IT administrator or person assigned responsibility for the IT infrastructure can be alerted immediately to any problems, allowing them to respond in a timely manner before issues escalate.

"With growing trends such as the Internet of Things and more complex IT infrastructures, businesses must ensure the smooth running of operations to achieve optimum business performance and success. PRTG 100 enables businesses to monitor the network by using protocols such as SNMP, Packet Sniffing or Flow, in addition to setting sensors for the common network services Ping, HTTP, FTP etc.

The sensors can monitor all of the traffic that is passing a switch. Virtual environments can also be integrated by the administrator as well. When Paessler was looking for a suitable network monitoring solution for his business eighteen years ago, he couldnt find anything that was easy to operate and that offered an extensive set of features.

As a result, we started developing PRTG and always put significant emphasis on user-friendliness. Everyone should be able to use PRTG in no time at all," he said. "Im convinced that our software can be of tremendous help for every company, regardless of its size or sector.

"Of course, its a big step for us to offer a license, which was formerly US$440, for free. But I believe its a win for both sides.
