Nuclear energy pillar of European Energy Union : The initiative of Romanian Energy Minister Andrei Gerea

Romanias Energy, SMEs and Business Environment Minister Andrei Gerea (photo) as Chairman of the group of pro-nuclear member states has sent to European Union Vice President Maros Sefcovic and EU Commissioner Arias Canete a letter in which he supports technological neutrality in the energy mix, including through the development of nuclear energy, as part of the process of creating the Energy Union. The document is endorsed by Romania, France, the Czech Republic, Lithuania, Poland, Slovakia and the United Kingdom. Likewise, Hungary has sent a letter to Vice President Maros Sefcovic, joining the group of pro-nuclear member states and expressing its support for the proposals presented in the Romanian ministers letter. From our point of view, the energy produced in nuclear power plants plays a serious role in ensuring energy security, not just for the states that support this technology but also for the European Union as a whole. This is the main message we want to send. Moreover, the energy produced in this manner has low impact on the environment compared to that produced through other technologies. Including nuclear energy in the nuclear mix allows us to set out on the right path in what concerns attaining the goals of limiting carbon emissions at European Union level, Andrei Gerea stated.

The document transmitted by Andrei Gerea points out, among others, the importance of promoting nuclear energy as a means of diversifying energy sources against the backdrop of pursuing the EUs climate change goals, namely the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions. Likewise, it emphasizes the role played by nuclear energy in consolidating a mix that would ensure the energy security of both the member states of the pro-nuclear group and of the European Union in general.

The document reiterates the intention to promote nuclear energy among member states that choose and support this source of energy. Nuclear projects should find EU support and financing, because they cannot be absent from the main sources of energy. We want to exploit this resource while simultaneously continuing efforts to enhance the degree of safety through research and innovation in the domain, Gerea opines.

Romanian Energy Minister Andrei Gereas initiative to propose to European bodies, on behalf of pro-nuclear member states, support measures for the development of the energy sector through the use of nuclear technologies has been welcomed by several political and economic circles within the EU.

Zimbabwe: European Union Renews Mugabe, Grace Travel Bans

THE European Union renewed for another year its sanctions against Zimbabwe, including a travel ban and asset freeze on President Robert Mugabe and his wife, according to a notice on Friday in the EU's Official Journal.

According to the notice deceased Zanu PF politicians Edward Chindori Chininga, Stanley Sakupwanya, and Nathan Shamuyarira were removed from the sanctions list.

"The restrictive measures should be renewed until Feb. 20, 2016," the notice read.

"The application of the travel ban and asset freeze should be maintained for two persons."

Zanu PF spokesman Simon Khaya Moyo condemned the decision.

"The sanctions against the First Family are illegal," he told state media Friday.

"We have maintained that they should be removed because they aren't justified. Zimbabwe isn't excited by such nonsensical statements.

"These illegal sanctions have done nothing but to destroy our economy. It doesn't matter what they try to do to us, we will persevere just like we have been doing all these years.

"We're a resilient nation. The country will continue with its indigenisation policy and implementation of ZimAsset. If we need assistance, that assistance will come from our friends all over the world."

Since imposing sanctions in 2002 over electoral fraud and human rights abuses, the EU has eased measures to encourage political reform in Zimbabwe, although it has kept its ban on Mugabe and his wife Grace, as well as an arms embargo.

Russia slams EU suggestion on India intervening on Ukraine

New Delhi : Russia Friday slammed a reported call of the European Union's envoy to India to "persuade" Russia over the turmoil in eastern Ukraine as "a case of sheer duplicity and sly distortion of the core reasons which led to the intra-Ukrainian conflict".

The Russian embassy in a statement said: "The European Union should retrospect on its own policy of appeasement instead of trying to seek India's services in persuading Russia to do something.

"Such kind of 'persuasion' is alien to Russia-India relations. Our special and privileged strategic partnership has no relation to the West's blunders in their policies towards the Ukraine and Kiev's self-induced crisis.

"We highly value India's balanced and independent approach to this issue," it said.

"The EU should better think how to pay that country's bills for natural gas and bail out its economy from falling into the abyss. And, lastly, a piece of friendly advice - do not try to meddle in Russia-India relations. They are immune to such kind of unsolicited and impolite interventions from outside," it said.

The European Union Wednesday pitched for India's engagement to resolve the Ukraine crisis, saying it can use its privileged relations with Russia to persuade the country to abide by international laws as well as the ceasefire agreement.

European Union Ambassador Joao Cravinho said India can play an important role in finding a peaceful solution to the Ukraine crisis on which Western countries have threatened Russia of more sanctions if it fails to de-escalate the tension.
