Longest statewide office droughts for South Dakota Democrats – Rapid City Journal

The recent hiring of Democratic former congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin as president of Augustana University presumably takes her out of the running for any statewide political office in the near future. That is bad news for South Dakota Democrats, who have not had a winning candidate in a statewide race since 2008. This list shows the last time a Democrat won each of South Dakotas statewide offices, beginning with the most recent Democratic victory.

1. Class 2 U.S. senator: Tim Johnson, 2008.

2. (tie) U.S. representative: Stephanie Herseth Sandlin, 2006; public utilities commissioner: Steve Kolbeck, 2006.

3. School and public lands commissioner: Bryce Healy, 2002.

4. (tie) Class 3 U.S. senator: Tom Daschle, 1998; treasurer: Richard Dick Butler, 1998 (photo not available).

5. (tie) Governor: Richard Dick Kneip, 1974; secretary of state: Lorna Herseth (grandmother of Stephanie Herseth Sandlin), 1974 (photo not available).

6. Attorney general: Kermit Sande, 1972 (photo not available).

7. Auditor: Harriet Horning, 1958 (photo not available).

KATHLEEN PARKER: Democrats’ foundation lacking – The Albany Herald

If the Democratic Party is ailing after losing the presidency to Donald Trump, state parties are on life support.

Here in the long-ago Democratic stronghold of Alabama, the party is all but dead, say some of its disheartened members. Consider: Not a single statewide office is held by a Democrat; the state Legislature is dominated by Republicans with just 33 Democrats out of 105 House seats and eight of 35 Senate seats.

Democrats havent won a U.S. Senate election in the state since 1992 or the governorship since 1998. There are no Democratic appellate judges, nor any Democratic members of the states Public Service Commission. Democrats also are becoming scarcer in county offices.

The Democratic Party in Alabama is on a crash-and-burn track unless something drastic happens to stop this runaway train, according to Sheila Gilbert, chair of the Calhoun County Democrats, who hand-delivered a letter outlining the partys problems following a speech I gave at Jacksonville State University as the Ayers lecturer.

The letter was signed by Gilbert as a leader of the Alabama Democratic Reform Caucus and 17 other members in attendance. The group, which formed two years ago to try to help revive the state party, wasnt coy about its reason for approaching me.

We need a spotlight on Alabama and some outside effort to avoid becoming a totally one-party state, Gilbert said.

I didnt bother to mention that the current U.S. attorney general, former Alabama Sen. Jeff Sessions, was shining quite a spotlight on their home state. Whether Sessions is forced to resign after already recusing himself from any investigation into Russias role in the 2016 election campaign remains to be seen. The fall of such a high-profile Republican could be useful to Democrats back home trying to defibrillate the party.

But Gilberts group has been critical of state Democratic Party officials for missing an opportunity to recruit candidates when other Republican politicians were in trouble, including the governor and House speaker. A recent meeting of county and state party leaders reportedly became heated, as when state Chairwoman Nancy Worley offered to call police to escort one county chairman from the room and may be emblematic more broadly of the partys disintegration from within.

The GOP went through this same sort of infighting and navel-gazing on the national level several years back. After losing the presidency to Barack Obama in 2008, it regrouped, reformed itself, became disciplined and has taken the House, Senate, the White House and most of the nations governorships, while also successfully gerrymandering congressional districts that have given Republicans the advantage in many states at least until the next redistricting in 2020.

Democrats are readying themselves for that fight, but theyll need to do more than try to redraw the map. While Democrats were basking in Obamas sunny smile, Republicans were busy building benches of future leaders, especially at the state attorney general level, where they are now in the majority. The strategy has been to recruit and help elect strong attorneys general who could be groomed to become governors, senators and possibly president.

What, meanwhile, can Democrats do, a fellow in the audience asked me. There was a plaintive tone in his voice and I wanted to help, though the truth is, Im not accustomed to Democrats asking my advice. But in the spirit of it takes two to tango and the fact that Id rather not live in a country exclusively run by either party Ill give it a fresh, morning-after stab.

Whats really ailing Democrats is theyve fallen in love with abstract principles, as reflected on an ADRC handout, without building a foundation where such goals as fair pay, transparency, diversity and such can be played out. Trump may have been coarse and loose at times during the campaign, but he spoke in plain language with plain meaning: Jobs, jobs, jobs.

Whether Trump can fix trade, create jobs and make money for the rest of us was a gamble people were willing to take. Fixing the economy was Obamas mandate, too, but he decided to focus on health care instead. This is where lust for legacy interferes with good governance. Obama did manage to help turn the economic steamship around the market bounced from just under 8,000 when he took office to nearly 20,000 but Wall Streets recovery didnt trickle down to the middle class, where Trump planted his flag.

When in doubt, look to the victor.

Democrats are bullies with a Russian fetish – The Tennessean

What is up with the Democrats obsession with Russia? With each new day, a new Russian conspiracy theory surfaces.

The Democrats latest Russian conspiracy is so terrifying, Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) says its giving him a knot in the pit of his stomach. A knot, because Attorney General Jeff Sessions didnt live in a bubble as a senator. Rather, the former Alabama senator did what senators sometimes do and met with Russian ambassador Sergey Kislyak.

Given Democrats logic, Schumer should resign for meeting with Vladimir Putin in 2003 and Nancy Pelosi should resign for meeting with former Russian President Medvedev and Kislyak in 2010. In fact, Fox News reports seven Democrats met with Kislyak in 2013 and the Daily Caller reports Kislyak visited the Obama White House 22 times between 2009 and 2016.

Sessions says his meetings had nothing to do with the Trump campaign and claims his answer during his confirmation hearing was honest and correct as I understood it.

Remarkably, Democrats believe that explanation is not okay for Sessions, but was perfectly acceptable for former Obama attorneys general.

If it was moral outrage, they wouldnt be able to switch it on and off at will.

Democrats are deliberately causing this chaos to make Trump resign, but it wont happen. Trump should have his DOJ investigate the Democrat-Russian connections along with the Obama administration scandals Democrats ignored.

Democrats looked the other way when Eric Holder was accused of and later admitted to lying about the Obama administrations Soviet Union-style surveillance of journalists critical of the administration. Perhaps this is where their obsession with Russia began. They also ignored Holders dealings with the New Black Panther voter suppression case and the Fast and Furious scandal.

Apparently, liberals moral convictions short-circuited the day Bill Clinton had a secret rendezvous at a Phoenix tarmac with then-Attorney General Loretta Lynch when Hillary was under FBI investigation. Their moral convictions were also switched off the day Obamas DOJ let former IRS official Lois Lerner off the hook for alleged criminal contempt of Congress for refusing to testify about the politically-motivated targeting of taxpayers.

We didnt hear Democrats demanding resignations or impeachment proceedings over the Benghazi cover-up when former National Security Advisor Susan Rice spread misleading information regarding the September 11, 2012 terrorist attack that Sen. John McCain described to CBS News as absolutely falsethe information was totally misleading, totally false.

The double standard on display every day is ridiculous, and the red tide that washed over the 2016 electoral college map proves Americans took notice.

In November, Americans turned from squeamish Republicans who refused to fight the bullies with a Russian fetish and voted for a street-fighter named Donald J. Trump.

Thats why Trumps supporters like it when Trump attacks the press because they watched former president Obama repeatedly attack Fox News and rightwing radio for eight years. Likewise, they care less if he appears un-presidential. They had eight years of a mom jeans-wearing president who goes down in history as the president who gave Queen Elizabeth an iPod and took selfies at Nelson Mandelas memorial service. Theyll be interested in Trumps tax returns when they see Obamas college transcripts.

Maybe.

Presently, they dont give one iota what Trump or his administration does or doesnt do because all they want is someone to punch back. Democrats have repeatedly shown us they only play by one set of rules. Theirs. For far too long, theyve gotten away with excusing the crooks and liars in their party and no one has called them to account.

Therefore, there isnt a riot violent enough or a womens march ridiculous enough or a Hollywood smear outlandish enough or a fake news headline outrageous enough, or, in this case, a Russian conspiracy theory believable enough -- to sway them to side with the bullies with a Russian fetish

GOP’s Darrell Issa represents a clear test for anti-Trump Democrats trying for electoral gains in 2018 – Washington Post

By Tony Perry By Tony Perry March 11 at 7:02 PM

OCEANSIDE, Calif. For three hours Saturday, Rep. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.) endured pointed questions, jeers and derisive laughter during two successive town halls in this northern suburb of San Diego.

But this wasnt just a moment for Issa to let anxious constituents vent their worries about immigration policy, health-care reform or the first seven weeks of President Trumps tenure. It was a major first test of the Democratic Partys efforts to turn antipathy toward Trump into electoral gains in 2018. It was also a chance for Issa to show that he is willing to stand apart from Trump for a district that has rapidly grown more liberal in recent years.

I do not work for the executive branch, Issa said in an opening statement Saturday at one of two morning town hall meetings at a community center here. I investigated the Obama administration. I also investigated the Bush administration.

Issa, 63, has been distancing himself from Trump for some time. Widely seen as a partisan flamethrower during his years leading the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and its many investigations of the Obama administration, Issa is more likely these days to defend the budget of the Environmental Protection Agency or to demand a rigorous investigation into allegations of Russian intervention in the 2016 election.

He has good reason to moderate: Californias 49th Congressional District, which encompasses the increasingly diverse and liberal suburban cities in northern San Diego County and southern Orange County, is no longer the safely Republican terrain that it was for Issas first eight elections to Congress.

Last year, Issa won narrowly against a lawyer and retired Marine colonel, Douglas Applegate, who has announced plans to challenge him again in 2018. Last week, environmental lawyer Mike Levin, another Democrat, announced that he, too, plans to challenge Issa.

On Saturday, one questioner noted that some Democrats have wondered whether Trump is too emotionally unstable to be trusted with nuclear weapons.

Issas answer stopped short of a full-throated show of support for the new commander in chief. If the issue comes up in front of the appropriate body, he said, I will vote my conscience.

Yet Issas attempts to distance himself from Trump were met with derision and boos. When he referred to Russian President Vladimir Putin as an evil son of a blank who sows chaos and then capitalizes on it, an audience member yelled so does Trump. The crowd cheered.

A protester outside the community center held a sign that seemed to sum up the attitude of many, if not most, of the more than 1,000 who attended the two sessions: Repeal and Replace the President.

One man wore a Russian military hat. Another wore a T-shirt that read, Trump-Putin, 16. A woman held a sign: Russia-Gate Follow the Money. Another had a shirt signaling that she is a nasty woman, a jibe Trump aimed at Hillary Clinton during a presidential campaign debate.

Between the two sessions, a reporter asked Issa whether he is worried about the 2018 congressional election becoming a referendum on Trump.

I dont care, he said. Fact is that Im going to be with Trump sometimes, against him sometimes.

Only a few of Issas colleagues held town hall meetings after Congresss workweek ended, but questions about the American Health Care Act, as the House GOP plan to replace the Affordable Care Act is known, were rampant. Rep. Douglas A. Collins (R-Ga.), a supporter of the bill, was confronted in a Friday night tele-town hall by a man named Bill who demanded that Republicans pass the repeal package of 2015. That has been the plan favored by Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and most of the conservative House Freedom Caucus.

[Will Obamacare repeal break the Freedom Caucus? It depends on Trump.]

Its already done, said the constituent. It doesnt take a PowerPoint presentation. Lets send it up. Collins assured the constituent that the 2015 bill is in this package thats going to be sent to the president, which is not true, as the AHCA keeps some parts of the ACA that Republicans formerly voted to repeal.

Rep. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.), a Freedom Caucus member whose district backed Trump by 17points, told a morning crowd in St. Augustine that he wasnt ready to back the bill.

I dont think you can come to grips with the bill in 36 hours. I dont, DeSantis said. Im not sure it does enough to lower the costs of health care.

DeSantis was booed when he praised the idea of expanding health savings accounts, a part of the GOPs plans; he also said that a viral moment from a CNN interview he did, where he appeared to be saying that cancer patients could get coverage at emergency rooms, was misinterpreted. He was received more sympathetically when he criticized the bill, saying that as structured, it might lead to higher premiums.

If you do it right, people are going to have access to cheaper plans, DeSantis said. If you dont, Im not sure its going to reduce costs.

Issa faced questions about the Affordable Care Act, too. He did not fully buy into the current GOP plan being promoted by House Speaker Paul D. Ryan (R-Wis.). But he didnt help himself with many in the crowd when he referred to the ACA as Obamacare, which prompted the audience to boo and cry out, the Affordable Care Act.

Issa responded sharply, Hey, its not affordable.

As at so many other town halls across the country in recent weeks, no one asked Issa about local issues, not even about a recent deployment of Marines from nearby Camp Pendleton to Syria. The only local issue was brought up by Issa: removal of nuclear fuel from the San Onofre power plant.

That suggests that the electorate is primed to turn the 2018 election into a referendum on Trump something of which Democrats are likely to try to take advantage.

After last years squeaker election in the 49th District, Democrats listed Issa as among the most vulnerable Republican incumbents in 2018. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee has hired a full-time organizer in the district. In response, the GOP campaign committee has included Issa among 10 House incumbents who will receive additional help from the party.

While most of the crowd Saturday was markedly anti-Trump, a smattering of the presidents supporters were present, some wearing the red Make America Great Again campaign hats. A bare-chested man outside held a sign asking Whats Not To Like? about Trumps views.

Repeatedly, Issa asked questioners to be succinct and implored the rest of the audience to not drown out the question or answer. His goal for the meeting was modest, he joked with the crowd.

The only thing I ask is that it not end like [the play] Hamilton, he said, referring to Alexander Hamiltons untimely death in a duel with Aaron Burr.

David Weigel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., contributed to this report.
