Democrat Shaughnessy Naughton makes second bid for Congress

Point Pleasant Democrat and publisher Shaughnessy Naughton will make a second run at the congressional seat held by Bucks Countys Mike Fitzpatrick.

Naughton announced her candidacy Thursday for the 2016 race for Pennsylvanias 8th District, which represents all of Bucks and parts of Montgomery County.

If elected, the candidate pledged once again to fight for the middle class and against career politicians.

A new generation of voices needs to step up and tackle issues like student loan debt and Americas crumbling infrastructure, said Naughton, 36.

The candidate also repeated earlier calls for an Apollo-type program for energy infrastructure. Germany, France and China are making these investments, Naughton said. Thats why we need a new generation of leaders in Washington.

Naughton last made a run for Congress in 2014, losing in a tight primary race to Kevin Strouse, the national Democratic organizations handpicked choice for that seat. Election returns from the 2014 primary showed Naughton with 48.87 percent of the vote. The difference between the two candidates was 817 ballots, according to state election returns.

Naughtons 2014 campaign was funded, in part, with $92,000 in personal donations to her war chest of $444,645, according to official returns. She reported $16,875 in contributions from political action committees.

This district is my home and, for me, this race is personal, Naughton said. I know these families and the challenges they face because theyre a lot like those my own family faced. My mom cleaned houses to support us. I want to fight in Congress for those same opportunities for other families.

Naughton is the second Democrat to announce a bid for Congress next year. In January, state Rep. Steve Santarsiero, D-31, of Lower Makefield, announced his intention to run.

On the Republican side, Bensalem state Rep. Gene DiGirolamo, R-18, has said hes considering a run for the GOP nomination.

Sestak's campaign for Senate officially afoot; he wants another shot at Toomey

PHILADELPHIA>> Democrat Joe Sestak will walk 80 short of 500 miles in his military-grade boots for a second shot at ending up at the front door of the U.S. Senate chambers.

"I promise you, it's going to be a darn fine walk to earn the trust of Pennsylvanians," he said Wednesday before swapping out his white high-top Reebok sneakers for the boots he wore during his tour in Afghanistan.

Sestak stood in front of Independence Hall an appropriate backdrop to push forward his "We the People" campaign to announce the start of his second attempt at the Senate seat currently held by Republican U.S. Sen. Pat Toomey. Modeling the famous lines of the U.S. Constitution as his slogan, he said he wants to mend a shortfall, or "trust deficit," between politicians and those that elected them.

He laced up his boots as "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" by The Proclaimers played in the background. He was joined by about 100 supporters to send him off on his 422-mile campaign walk to unseat Toomey.

Sestak, pushing for government accountability, said he wants to earn the trust of Pennsylvania "one step at a time."

The retired three-star admiral and one-term 7th Congressional District representative plans to walk from east to west across the state by the end of March. He trekked several blocks through the slushy streets of Philadelphia to the Vietnam War Memorial to gain support from war veterans.

Along his campaign trail, Sestak plans to meet with small business owners, senior citizens, law enforcement personnel and hunters, to name a few.
