Democrat to join Assembly race

A Democrat from Augusta declared her candidacy Thursday for the state Assembly in the Republican-dominated 24th District.
Jacky Stapel, 34, a first-time candidate, said the impending resignation of Assemblywoman Alison Littell McHose, R-24th Dist., was the driving force behind her entry.
Stapel said she believes McHose's still-to-be-determined successor will be more vulnerable than Assemblyman Parker Space, R-24th Dist., in the Nov. 3 general election.
All 80 seats in the Assembly are on the ballot this year.
Stapel spoke to the New Jersey Herald prior to attending a meeting of the Warren County Democrats, where she was to launch her candidacy.
She said she deliberately chose Warren County for her announcement, which along with Mount Olive in Morris County makes up about 30 percent of the district.
All of Sussex County is in the 24th District.
I figured we should really get them involved. It's their district, too, Stapel said.

Rep. Andr Carsons appointment to the House intelligence panel has prompted a shocking amount of comments attacking his religion, House Democratic Caucus Vice Chair Joe Crowley writes.

A top House Democrat is urging his colleagues to defend Rep. Andr Carson against faith-based attacks following this weeks announcement that the Indiana Democrat would be the first Muslim to serve on the Houses Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence.
Rep. Joe Crowley of New York, the vice chairman of the Democratic Caucus, wrote to Republican and Democratic lawmakers Thursday expressing his disgust at the slurs that online commenters are levying against Carson because of his Islamic faith.

It has come to my attention that there have been a shocking amount of comments made in conservative publications and on social media to the effect that Rep. Carsons integrity is somehow in question as a result of his religion, Crowley wrote. These comments deeply offend me, as Im sure they offend all of you, which is why I hope all of us will take every opportunity to renounce these kinds of comments and discourage this kind of harmful talk.
Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) announced Carsons appointment to the intelligence panel on Tuesday. He is also the second Muslim to be elected to Congress.
