CSI: Crime Scene Investigation, which has become the Law & Order of the past decade, could be nearing the end of its historic run. For the first time in the shows history, the current season will run less than 22 episodes.
The news was first reported by TV Line, which confirmed that season 15 of the venerable drama will run 18 episodes.
While the show isnt getting the same numbers it used to when William Peterson starred, Ted Danson and Elisabeth Shue have done a good job at drawing viewers. CSI now airs on Sundays at 10 p.m., leaving behind the Wednesday slot. It is doing as well as previous shows have down for CBS at that time, including The Mentalist.
CBS decision was likely based more on the fact that it just has too much drama. The network has another CSI spinoff, CSI: Cyber set to debut in midseason, as well as Vince Gilligans highly anticipated Battle Creek. The network also has The Mentalist waiting to return for probably one last season.
During CSIs historic 15-year run, the Jerry Bruckheimer production has become one of the most well known shows in the world. If the show is in fact reaching the finish line, it will still go into the history books as the one that changed the crime drama format.
