Magnus Carlsen, the world champion, reached another major final this week despite throwing a game in only four moves to compensate his Chinese opponent for a loss by disconnection.

Carlsen met world No3 Ding Liren on Tuesday in the semi-final of the $150,000 online Chessable Masters. With a minute left, Ding disconnected, a recurring problem for Chinas elite players, and the rules gave Carlsen a win byforfeit.

Game two, with Ding White, opened 1 c4 e6 2 g3 Qg5? 3 Bg2 Qxd2+?? 4 Qxd2 and Carlsen resigned. He explained: I have immense respect for Ding as a chess player and as a human being, and I think it was the right thing to do.

Carlsen later won that first set 3.5-2.5, and then the second set 2.5-0.5 on Wednesday. After his free point, Ding was outclassed and failed to win another game.

The Norwegian, 29, will play the final on Friday and Saturday with a possible tie-break on Sunday. Croatian ace Antonio Radics Agadmators Chess Channel has over 700,000 subscribers - attracting 275million hits on YouTube - with fans loving his analysis of games.

He was assessing a match played by Hikaru Nakamura, a Japanese-born American chess grandmaster.

Antonio, who takes on top players from around the world, believes his latest podcast was removed by an algorithm which picked out key words.

He said: "I have uploaded 1,800 videos over three years and there wasn't a single guideline violation.

"It could refer to the current world situation.

"There's talk of racism, and the YouTube algorithm could have heard 'black goes to B6 instead of C6, white will always be better'.

"Maybe with the current situation in the world, if you hear something like 'white will always be better', it might flag this video as inappropriate, harmful or dangerous and take it down.

"If that's the case, I'm sure all my 1,800 videos will be taken down as it's black against white to the death in every video.

Last week, looking at the eight ways to end a chess game, we examined checkmate, resignation, timeout, and stalemate. The remaining four ways to end the chess game, insufficient material, 50-move rule, repetition, and agreement are being examined today. Although checkmate and stalemate are the two vital aspects of bringing conclusion to a game, knowing the others are equally important.

Insufficient materialWhen a player cannot force checkmate owing to inadequate material the game is drawn automatically. If two Kings stand alone on the chessboard and there are no other pieces, the game is drawn. Once a player has checkmating material, the game is not drawn.You cannot force checkmate with a King and Knight vs the King, neither can you do it with a King and Bishop vs the King. In those circumstances, the game is drawn. However, checkmate can be effected with two Bishops or two knights vs the lone King.

The International Chess Federation (FIDE) on Tuesday announced that the 2020 Online Olympiad will be held from July 22 to August 30.

The Online Olympiad would be a national team event in which all federations affiliated to FIDE have the right to participate, it said.

Each team will consist of six players, in a mixed format with a minimum quota of three female players and two junior players. The teams may have up to six reserves, plus a team captain.

The time control for the event will be 15 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move.

The event will comprise two main stages: divisions stage and play-offs stage, from the Round of 16 to the final.

FIDE further said that since the Online Olympiad is a mixed event, for pairing purposes the ranking will be established in accordance with the final standings of the last Gaprindashvili Cup, which combined the results in the open and womens sections at the Batumi Chess Olympiad 2018.

Registration form will be published on the FIDE website in the coming days. National federations will receive further instructions via email, and registration will open on July 4.
