Johnson’s upcoming resignation will trigger political chess game – The Steubenville Herald-Star

YOUNGSTOWN U.S. Rep. Bill Johnson said he will resign his elected post in the first quarter of next year, before he is scheduled to take over on March 15 as president of Youngstown State University.

Johnson, R-Marietta, was hired for the new post Tuesday by an 8-1 vote of the universitys board of trustees.

His resignation will likely result in several Republican candidates seeking to succeed him in the 6th Congressional District seat. The 6th is considered a safe Republican district that takes in all or part of 11 counties including Jefferson, Harrison, Carroll, Belmont, Columbiana, Mahoning, Monroe, Noble, Washington, Stark and Tuscarawas counties. Mahoning is the districts most-populous county.

Dec. 20 is the election filing deadline for candidates wanting to run in the March 19 primary for the full two-year term.

With Johnsons resignation occurring after the Dec. 20 deadline, the state would likely be unable to schedule a special primary in March and then a special election in August for the seat.

A Republican and Democratic primary is first needed before a general election for the unexpired term.

That would mean the seat wouldnt be filled until next Novembers election.

It would leave the 6th Congressional District without a representative for most of 2024. And even if an August special general election were held, the district still would be without a representative for about six to seven months.

James A. Traficant Jr., who represented Mahoning and most of Trumbull counties in the U.S. House, was expelled July 24, 2002, after being convicted of 10 felonies, including bribery and racketeering. That left that district without a representative for five months.

State Sen. Michael Rulli, R-Salem, who has eyed higher office, said he is strongly considering attempting to succeed Johnson in the district. Rullis state Senate district includes all of Mahoning and Columbiana counties.

Rulli said he was planning to run last year for Congress if he were in a district that didnt include a Republican incumbent. But Johnson, who has represented Columbiana County since he was first elected in 2010, kept that county in his district.

We thought we were two or three years away from this decision, and now its only a couple of weeks, Rulli said. Im trying to work through things. Just that its an idea and a possibility is beautiful.

He plans to announce his decision shortly.

Other potential candidates are state Rep. Ron Ferguson, R-Wintersville; Christina Hagan of Marlboro, a former state House member who lost a congressional election in 2020 to Democrat Tim Ryan; and Madison Gesiotto Gilbert, who lost a congressional district race in 2022 and serves as a national spokeswoman at the Republican National Committee. Hagan and Gesiotto Gilbert live outside the 6th District, but a congressional candidate only needs to live in Ohio to run.

Sources say Christian Palich, who lives in the Columbus area and is vice president of public affairs for Taft Stettinius & Hollister, a law firm, was interested, but has since changed his mind. Palich is a former president of the Ohio Coal Association, worked in the Donald Trumps presidential administration at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as well as for Johnson.

Why every student should give Chess Club a chance – Hawk Eye

In the vast landscape of high school extracurriculars, only one activity stands out as a game-changer for cultivating critical thinking, strategic planning, and a sense of community chess.

While it might not be on everyones radar, the Chess Club makes a compelling case for why every student should give this timeless game a chance.

No one chess game is the same, there are almost limitless possibilities and consequences for each move so it doesnt get repetitive.

Sammy Basile

Senior Sammy Basile encourages students to give the world of chess a try, saying, I would say to just come once and check it out. If you enjoy it, then keep coming and getting experience. There are a variety of players, so if you wanna be competitive you can or if you just wanna chill and play non-competitive games, you can do that too.

The inclusive and diverse nature of the Chess Club speaks to its appeal to students of all backgrounds and interests. Whether youre a seasoned player seeking intense matches or a newcomer looking for a laid-back atmosphere, the Chess Club offers a welcoming space for everyone.

Mr. Vic Diprampero, the dedicated sponsor of the Chess Club, expresses his passion for the game and its impact on students. Well, I love chess. Ive always liked it since I was a kid. When I first started teaching, there was a Chess Club, but nobody did anything, so I took it over and grew it pretty rapidly. I think its important to be thinkers.

He elaborates on why he believes chess is crucial for students, stating, For one, its very fun, but it makes you think and it makes you think about consequences and actions.

In a world where instant gratification often takes precedence, chess offers a different perspective, encouraging players to contemplate their moves and consider the repercussions of each decision in order to find a hard-earned victory.

Chess grips its exponent, shackling the mind and brain so that the inner freedom and independence of even the strongest character cannot remain unaffected.

Albert Einstein

The Chess Club not only provides a platform for intellectual growth but also fosters a sense of community among its members. The strategic nature of the game encourages students to think critically, plan ahead, and engage in friendly competition. Its not just about moving pieces on a board; its about honing skills that transcend the chessboard and become valuable assets in academics and beyond.

For those intimidated by the idea of learning a new game, Mr. Vic emphasizes incorporating chess into ones routine, saying, Use your phones for chess instead of TikTok, and you will get better rapidly if you give it a chance.

In a world dominated by digital distractions, the Chess Club offers a unique opportunity for students to redirect their focus toward a mentally stimulating and rewarding activity.

Chess isnt just a game; its a journey of personal and intellectual development. Whether youre a grandmaster in the making or a casual player looking for a new hobby, Bethel Parks Chess Club welcomes everyone to join the ranks of strategic thinkers and experience the timeless appeal of the game.

Chess Club meets on Mondays and Wednesdays in Mr. Vics room. Feel the thrill or pain that comes with one word: checkmate!

Chess Club Taps Felix Pastorius, Cory Wong, and Isaiah Sharkey … – Bass Magazine

Recorded as a live, in-studio performance at Echo Mountain Studios in Asheville, NC, the 4 song EP includes the titles, Your Shirt Santa Knows Stay Fresh and Its Not Me, Its You which all feature Champagne (Adam Chase) on drums and Paris (Danny Darress) on keys and vocals. The group tapped Vulpeck frontman, Cory Wong, as the mixing engineer and features guest musicians, Isaiah Sharkey (John Mayer, DAngelo) and Felix Pastorius (Cindy Blackman, Jeff Coffin).

Kicking off with Your Shirt the band masterfully tells the relatable story of the uncomfortable experience we have all had of being caught trying to read someones shirt. The notable musicianship of Paris shines in his masterful Wultizer solo supported by the funky driving groove of Champagne with Felix Pastorius diggin in on bass guitar.

Their wit continues as they pivot to the instant holiday classic Santa Knows telling the story of young love sneaking behind their parents backs to visit each other during Christmas. The innuendo laden song nods to Santa Baby and Jingle Bells while allowing Isaiah Sharkey to channel is pop sensible guitar work that reminds the listener of his work with John Mayer.

When the Demo kicks into Stay Fresh the Vulpeck influence becomes more apparent as does the tonal direction of mixing engineer, Cory Wong. While Joe Dart is not on this recording, the bass break is virtuosically filled by bass guitar royalty, Felix Pastorius. The jazzy, chill funk groove lays the foundation for the lyrics that speak to the experience of letting a love interest know that they need a breathmint. Both relatable and funny, Stay Fresh has a signature sound that might best represent the overall vibe of Chess Club.

Rounding out the EP, Its Not Me, Its You shows a hint of diversity stylistically for the album. Driven by a John Mayer style pop guitar riff played by Isaiah Sharkey, the rock pop tunes fits into the world of break up songs that have made Taylor Swift and Olivia Rodrigo so popular. In humorous defiance, Chess Club exclaims Its Not Me, Its You after contemplating the ways to let (a not special enough) someone down and end a relationship.

Chess Club exclaimed, They Wanted A Demo and delivered a 4 song EP that has the world excited for future of what can only be described as the best band of all time.

Presave the album athere.
